The recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 features 601 of the top higher education institutions to study physics and astronomy.

The QS University Rankings by Subject are based on four indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper and the H-index (a way of measuring the productivity and published work of a scientist or scholar). Top universities for physics in the US and Canada

The United States has 124 of the 601 top physics universities in the world. Of these, six can be found in the world top ten, including the world leader Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT is the top US institution in terms of research output, accounting for around five percent of the US’s total contribution to papers in the field, as indexed by our research partners at Elsevier.

Outside of the top 10, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 12th) rises seven places this year. Meanwhile, Yale University falls three places to joint 16th and Columbia University drops four places to joint 18th. All of these universities scored highly in the research citations per paper indicator, representing the quality of the schools’ research. Elsevier found that US universities are tackling big-impact topics with their research, including renewable energy, innovative materials, and the ongoing pursuit to understand the planet and universe.

Canada is home to 19 universities offering physics courses; two of which are located in the world top 50: University of Toronto (joint 26th, falling five places) and University of British Columbia (49th, rising eight positions).

Top universities for physics in Europe

238 of the world’s top universities to study physics can be found in Europe. Of these, 37 are in the United Kingdom. The University of Cambridge and University of Oxford both feature in the global top 10, in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Other notable UK universities include University College London (UCL, down three places this year to joint 31st), the University of Manchester (falling four places to joint 41st) and University of Edinburgh (dropping five places to joint 45th).

Germany is well known for its focus on sciences and is the third largest contributor of Nobel laureates in physics. Germany has 41 universities featuring in the physics and astronomy rankings this year, with three of these in the top 50. Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is Germany’s highest ranked university for physics in 2021 in joint 22nd.

Italy is home to 25 top universities to study physics and astronomy, including top-ranking Sapienza - Università di Roma in joint 41st. France also performs well with 22 entries this year, including three in the top 50, with Université PSL (Paris Sciences & Lettres) rising six places to joint 31st.

Russia has 17 physics universities, with Lomonosov Moscow State University (joint 29th) the only Russian university in the global top 50. Where we can see some room for improvement in Russia is in their levels of collaboration in answering the big questions in physics. Only 28 percent of Russia’s research is the result of a global collaboration compared with the US’s 40 percent, Germany’s 62 percent and the UK’s 70 percent, Elsevier found.

Spain has 14 universities in the rankings this year and the Netherlands has 9, with Delft University of Technology, rising seven places to joint 42nd place.

Poland and Switzerland each have six universities in the physics school rankings. Of these, the top ranking is ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, 9th). Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) also places in the top 20, in 14th.

Top universities for physics in Australia and New Zealand

Australia has an impressive 17 universities in this year’s physics school rankings and New Zealand has five.

Australia’s top 50 placing university is Australian National University (ANU, 40th), earning a high score for research citations per paper. Another notable university is the University of Melbourne in joint 66th, earning an admirable score in the employer reputation indicator.

Over in New Zealand the University of Auckland places the highest in 151-200th, scoring well in the employer reputation indicator.

Top universities for physics in Asia

135 of the world’s best physics schools are found in Asia. Of these, an incredible 40 are located in Mainland China. The top ranking Chinese university this year is Tsinghua University (13th), earning an incredibly high score in the H-Index and the research citations per paper indicators. China outputs the highest number of papers in Physics and Astronomy globally, accounting for over a quarter of the world’s papers in the subject over the past 5 years, as indexed by our research partners at Elsevier.

Ranking in the top 50 is Tsinghua University (13th), Peking University (21st), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (joint 43rd) and Fudan University (48th).

Japan also performs well in this year’s rankings, with 22 universities featured this year, including the top ranking University of Tokyo in 10th, earning a near-perfect score for academic reputation.

South Korea has 22 universities in this year’s rankings, including new entrant, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (351-400). South Korea’s highest ranking physics school this year is Seoul National University (SNU, 36th)

Bangladesh and Vietnam each have one ranked physics school this year, whereas Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Kazakhstan each have two. Indonesia’s one new entry this year is University of Indonesia (551-600). Both of Singapore’s ranked universities appear in the world top 50; National University of Singapore (NUS, rising nine places this year to 15th) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU, climbing 11 places to 20th).

India sees 17 institutions in our subject rankings for physics and astronomy, yet none of these are in the top 100. India’s top-ranking physics university in joint 103rd place is Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB).

Taiwan also performs well, with nine universities featuring in the rankings for physics. Its National Taiwan University (NTU) features in the world top 100 in joint 59th. Hong Kong’s six universities include the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST, rising ten places to 47th).

Top universities for physics in Latin America     

Latin America is home to 22 universities offering physics programs this year. The highest ranking university for physics in Latin America this year is found in Brazil, with Universidade de São Paulo (USP) ranking joint 90th in the world. Eight other top physics programmes can be found in Brazil.

There are six top physics universities in Chile, including Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 114th. Peru and Puerto Rico each have a single entry in the ranking this year.

Mexico contains six top universities to study physics, including Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in joint 103rd place. UNAM scores particularly well in the employer reputation indicator.

Argentina’s three universities include one in the world top 150: Universidad de Buenos Aires (127th), which scores well in both the employer reputation indicator and the research citations per paper indicator. Columbia is also home to two physics universities.

Top universities for physics in Africa and the Middle East

In Africa there are seven physics schools in the ranking this year, including two from Egypt; Cairo University (351-400th) and Ain Shams University (451-500th). South Africa contains five top physics universities, with University of Cape Town the highest ranked, in 201-250.

Meanwhile over in the Middle East, there are 12 universities in this year’s subject ranking for physics. Of these, three are from Iran, five are from Israel and five are located in Saudi Arabia. Israel’s top physics schools, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology and Weizmann Institute of Science, both rank 151-200th this year.

Top universities for economics in the US and Canada

With 100 universities offering economics programs in the United States and 19 in Canada, North America has a total of 22 economics schools making it into the top 50 this year.

The world’s best education for economics can be found at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), overtaking Harvard University this year. MIT earns a perfect score for academic reputation. MIT’s economics courses are constantly being developed to include insights from the faculty’s world-class research, which has received numerous awards including the Nobel Prize.

Outside of the global top 10, the United States has 13 economics programs in the top 50. Notable universities include: Columbia University (11th), New York University (NYU, 12th) University of Pennsylvania (13th) and Northwestern University (14th). As well as being the world’s number one country in terms of economic output, the US is also ahead when it comes to quality, with three of the top five economics research papers coming out of (or in collaboration with) US institutions, our research partners at Elsevier found.

Canada claims two universities in the top 50 for economics this year: the University of Toronto (22nd) and University of British Columbia (23rd). Both schools earn high scores for the research citations by paper index which measures the strength of the faculty’s research. In the economics department at the University of British Columbia, the faculty’s research is widely influential across Canada and has impacted public policies on issues such as taxes and minimum wage rates.

Top universities for economics in Europe

Europe is home to 214 of the world’s best economics and econometrics schools this year. Of these, 51 are situated in the United Kingdom, including six in the top 50.

The top-ranking European economics program can be found at the UK’s London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). LSE’s economics department counts ten Nobel Prize winners amongst its faculty and almost every major intellectual development within economics over the past 50 years has had input from members of the department.

The highest ranked economics and econometrics program outside of the UK and US can be found in Italy at Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi (18th). The school maintains close links with international corporations, contributing to its high score in the employer reputation indicator. In total, Italy counts 21 universities in this year’s economics schools ranking.

Germany claims two universities in the global top 50 for economics. Of these, the top ranking is Universität Mannheim (joint 40th); a school which takes an international approach to teaching and is widely regarded for its strong research reputation and the quality of its economics courses. Approximately one fifth of Germany’s research papers made it into the top 10 percent of academic journals worldwide, Elsevier found.

Belgium performs well this year, with three of its six universities in the global top 100. Of these, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven performs the best in joint 60th. The Netherlands claim five universities in the top 100 and 10, with its top-ranking Tilburg University placing in joint 28th worldwide.

France is home to 15 of the economics universities featured in this year’s rankings, with six in the world top 100. Paris School of Economics once again takes the top spot in France (ranking joint 40th). Elsevier found that this year, France’s academic research in economics has focused mainly on entrepreneurship and digital currency, renewable energy, stock market volatility and the EU.

 Spain also performs well, with 17 schools in the index and its top-ranking school, Universidad Carlos III, in 47th place.

Seven of the world’s best economics courses can be found at Switzerland’s universities and two of these are in the global top 50. The economics courses at University of Zurich (joint 30th) combine modern economics with elements of history, political science, psychology, sociology, biology, and neuroscience.

Top universities for economics in Australia and New Zealand

Australia has 21 of the best universities in the world for economics and econometrics. Five of these are in the global top 50. The economics courses at the top-ranking University of Melbourne (joint 30th) teach students problem solving and data analysis skills which can be used for a wide range of careers.

The University of Sydney (joint 38th) earns one of the country’s highest scores for employer reputation. Its alumni include a former Prime Minister, leaders in the World and Reserve banks and many graduates have held influential positions in the Treasury and other policy departments.

New Zealand’s universities boast seven of the world’s top economics and econometrics courses, with the University of Auckland (joint 96th) taking the top spot in New Zealand, earning a high score for employer reputation.

Top universities for economics in Asia

Asia is home to 94 of the world’s most prestigious universities to study economics and econometrics. 

Mainland China claims the majority of these, with 24 top schools, and two in the world top 50. Mainland China has seen a general improvement in our subject rankings for Economics, with many institutions moving up the ranks. This is reflective of fiercer competition from China more widely this year, as can be seen in our other subjects. Peking University ranks 24th for its economics program which helps students build transferrable problem solving and data analysis skills. Tsinghua University places close behind in joint 25th this year, with a high score in employer reputation.

Japan has the second highest number of universities in Asia, with 13 universities in the rankings this year. The University of Tokyo (30th) is the highest ranked of these, despite dropping two places this year.

South Korea has 11 economics programs featuring in the index, including Seoul National University (SNU), which rises three places this year to joint 45th. SNU earns its highest score in the employer reputation indicator and its graduates have been hired in many leading economic institutions around the world, including in government positions.

Hong Kong performs well this year, with three of its six economics universities in the world top 50. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) performs best for economics and econometrics in 27th place. HKUST earns an impressive score for the research citations per paper indicator due to the strong research published by its faculty in some of the top academic journals in economics. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and University of Hong Kong (HKU) also perform well, ranking 48th and 49th respectively.

Of Taiwan’s seven entries this year, National Taiwan University (NTU) scores the highest in 83rd place. Singapore is home to three top universities to study economics, with all three in the world top 100, including National University of Singapore (NUS) in 17th place.

Top universities for economics in Latin America  

There are 25 Latin American economics programs featured in the subject rankings this year.

The majority of these are located in Brazil, where there are eight top universities offering excellent economics courses. The highest ranked of these is Fundação Getulio Vargas in 101-150th. It scores highly in the research citations per paper indicator and has over 90 research centers, each producing a large volume of academic research.

Colombia is home to five economics programs in the rankings, with Universidad de Los Andes Colombia (Uniandes, 151-200) earning the best score for employer reputation in the country. Uniandes strives for academic excellence while encouraging character development amongst its students. This unique mix makes the school’s graduates very popular amongst employers.

One of Argentina’s three entries, Universidad de Buenos Aires scores particularly well for employer reputation. The school offers a variety of paid educational internships in companies across the country to help boost students’ career prospects. Mexico also has three entries, with its top economics program found at Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM). ITESM climbed an impressive six places in 2021 to reach 145th.

Chile’s four entries this year include Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 106th and Uruguay and Peru each have a single economics program featuring in the index this year.

Top universities for economics in Africa and the Middle East

Africa is home to seven top universities for economics and econometrics. Five of these are situated in South Africa, and two are in Egypt. Of the universities in South Africa, University of Johannesburg and University of The Witwatersrand have both risen up to 50 places in the rankings this year, both placing 351-400.

One of Egypt’s two programs in the rankings, Cairo University, also climbed up to 50 places this year, ranking 301-350.The school’s economics courses are four years long and aim to educate students in economics, statistics and political science.

The Middle East has eight universities in the rankings this year. Israel‘s Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University rank the highest in the Middle East, both in the top 200 worldwide. 

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdul Aziz University (KAU, 201-250), the UAE’s United Arab Emirates University (451-500th) and Iran’s sole entry, University of Tehran (401-450), have all climbed up to 50 places this year.

Top universities for mechanical engineering in the US and Canada

The US has 91 universities offering programs in mechanical engineering this year, with five schools featuring in the global top ten and 11 more in the top 50.

The US’ Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the world’s best mechanical engineering university for the sixth consecutive year. MIT’s mechanical engineering programs combine analysis and theoretical teaching with hands-on learning. It earns perfect scores for both academic and employer reputation.

Significant changes in the rankings for US universities this year include Cornell University, down nine places to joint 45th and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 48th after dropping 10 places.

Canada has 20 of the world’s top universities for mechanical engineering. Two of these can be found in the global top 50, including the highest-ranking Canadian university for mechanical engineering, University of Toronto (34th). At the University of Toronto, engineering students are required to complete 600 hours of practical work before graduation. This enhances their resume and makes them more attractive to graduate employers.

Top universities for mechanical engineering in Europe

173 top mechanical engineering schools are found in Europe. Of these, 38 are in the United Kingdom: the most of any European country. Three UK-based mechanical engineering schools feature in the world top 10, with two more in the top 50. Outside the top 10, notable universities in the UK include the University of Manchester in 29th and Cranfield University in joint 45th, both falling two places this year.

Europe’s top ranked university for mechanical engineering this year is the University of Cambridge (third). Across its research, teaching and graduate study, the University of Cambridge’s engineering department encourages students to take advantage of its highly networked community and brings its latest research and development into its teaching.

Ireland is home to seven of Europe’s top mechanical engineering universities, including Trinity College Dublin (TCD, joint 138th). Germany has 18 top mechanical engineering universities, including its top ranking Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen in 18th place.

France performs well this year with 19 mechanical engineering universities featured. France’s highest ranked university for mechanical engineering is Ecole Polytechnique, which remains in the top 50 despite dropping three places. Earning a high score in the employer reputation indicator, Ecole Polytechnique’s curriculum prepares students for a variety of engineering careers by covering a wide range of topics, including civil engineering, aeronautics and biomechanics.

Amongst Spain’s 10 featured universities Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (joint 68th) falls 19 places this year, but is still the country’s top ranked university for mechanical engineering. Seven of the top universities for mechanical engineering are found in Belgium, including Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 27th place, rising four places this year.

Denmark boasts four universities in the subject rankings this year and the Netherlands is home to four, including Delft University of Technology in 7th place: the best continental European mechanical engineering program in the rankings this year. Sweden also offers four mechanical engineering programs, including at KTH Royal Institute of Technology (25th place).

The Czech Republic has three universities in the ranking this year and Austria has two. Portugal’s University of Porto ranks amongst the top 150 in the world this year in 128th place.

Of Switzerland’s three universities featured this year, two place in the global top 20: : ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, 13th) and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, 16th).

Top universities for mechanical engineering in Australia and New Zealand

Australia is home to 19 of the top universities for mechanical engineering. These include one new entry this year: University of Southern Queensland (451-500).

The University of New South Wales (UNSW, 54th) is Australia’s highest-ranking university this year, earning a high score in employer reputation. Students are taught by experts in mechanical engineering and have access to state-of-the-art facilities for laboratory and research work.

Significant movers in Australia this year include the University of Melbourne (60th), which drops 10 spots in the 2021 mechanical engineering rankings and the Queensland University of Technology (QUT, 151-200) which climbs 50 places.

In New Zealand, four universities feature in the mechanical engineering rankings with the University of Auckland performing the best in 119th place. The university earns a high score for the research citations per paper; a reflection of the high standard of research by the university’s faculty members.

Top universities for mechanical engineering in Asia 

128 top Asian universities are featured in this year’s mechanical engineering ranking. An impressive 35 of these entries are in Mainland China - the most of any other Asian country.

Of these, nine are in the world top 100, with top ranking Tsinghua University rising three places to 11th. Tsinghua University earns a perfect score in the H-Index this year, which measures the productivity and impact of the university’s published work.

Also performing well in the rankings is Japan with 19 universities featured. Notable Japanese universities include the top-ranking University of Tokyo, falling three places this year to 21st, and Tokyo Institute of Technology, dropping four places to 31st.

Singapore’s two entries both reach the global top 10. Its highest ranking, Nanyang Technological University (NTU, fifth) earns its best score in the employer reputation indicator. NTU’s mechanical engineering course offers a flexible curriculum that has been specially developed to meet dynamic industry needs and helps students acquire specialist skills and knowledge.

All of Hong Kong SAR’s five ranked universities can be found in the global top 150, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST, 28th).

South Korea has an admirable 18 mechanical engineering universities in this year’s rankings, with top 50 entries including KAIST - Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (22nd), Seoul National University (SNU, 26th).

Top universities for mechanical engineering in Latin America  

In Latin America, there are currently 23 top mechanical engineering universities featured in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021.

Brazil has the most Latin American universities in the world rankings this year, with nine institutions featured. These include Universidade de São Paulo (USP) in 61st place. USP has strong links with industry, which may contribute for its high score in the employer reputation indicator.

Mexico has four entrants this year, with its top ranked Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) placing 100th. ITESM has 26 campuses around the country and is widely known for its state-of-the-art facilities and the high quality of its faculty’s research.

Colombia also has four mechanical engineering schools in this year’s rankings and Argentina has two.

Top universities for mechanical engineering in Africa and the Middle East 

In the Middle East there are 21 universities offering programs in mechanical engineering this year. Israel is home to three of these universities, and Saudi Arabia has four, including King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), which ranks 122nd in the world.

The United Arab Emirates has three top universities in the mechanical engineering subject rankings, with Khalifa University falling from 151-200th to 201-250 this year.

Iran is home to seven mechanical engineering schools - the most of any other Middle Eastern country this year. Its top-ranking school, Sharif University of Technology, places in the global top 200. The university’s mechanical engineering program focuses on educating and training engineers to start their career with strong leadership and management skills.

In Africa there are nine universities featuring in the mechanical engineering subject rankings this year, including five in South Africa and four in Egypt, where Cairo University is the top ranking in 201-250.

Top law schools in the US and Canada

With 50 of the world’s top law schools located in the US and 12 in Canada, an impressive 18 North American universities make it into the global top 50 for law this year.

The best university in the world for law is Harvard University in the US, retaining the title for the sixth consecutive year and scoring particularly highly in the employer reputation indicator. Harvard Law’s graduates are highly sought after by employers in law firms, businesses, government and non-profit organizations. Canada’s highest ranked law school, the University of Toronto (joint 17th) rises three places this year and earns its highest score in the academic reputation indicator. The University of Toronto’s law school professors are leading experts in their field and the school’s law programs are incredibly diverse, allowing students to tailor their study to meet their individual needs and ambitions.

Top law schools in Europe

Europe is the most well-represented region globally for law schools, with 148 ranked programs, including 13 in the global top 50 and three in the global top 10.

The United Kingdom has an impressive 37 law schools in the ranking, the most of any country in Europe, with eight of these featuring in the global top 50. Amongst them is University of Oxford, the top law school in Europe, ranking 2nd globally. The University of Oxford states its aim is to help law students analyze complex information, construct arguments and write with precision and clarity. This is reflected in its high score for academic reputation.

KU Levin’s law school in Belgium ranks at joint 35th globally this year, placing amongst the six universities offering law courses in Belgium. Founded in 1425, KU Levin’s Faculty of Law is the largest in Belgium, emphasizing an international and comparative approach to law.

France’s Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne enters the top 20 worldwide this year, rising five places. The law school boasts a growing international presence, with links to universities around the world and is largely recognized as one of the most distinguished centers of education and research in Europe. It places amongst the nine French law schools in the rankings.

Elsewhere in Europe, Germany features two law schools in the global top 50: Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (39th) and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (41st).

The Netherlands is also home two universities in the top 50, with Leiden University in 24th place, and the University of Amsterdam in joint 35th.

Top law schools in Asia

There are 52 Asian law schools in the rankings this year, with seven schools making it into the global top 50.

Mainland China is the most well-represented region in Asia in the law school rankings, with 15 programs featured. Two of these programs are in the world top 50, with Tsinghua University in 27th and Peking University in 28th place. Both of these universities are incredibly research intensive and have produced many prominent legal scholars, judges and lawyers.

Asia’s highest ranked law school is the National University of Singapore (NUS), rising two places to 10th this year. The school’s law program earns a high score across the indicators which perhaps can be credited to its broad curriculum, which, in addition to the core areas of law, allows students to choose electives ranging from Asian legal studies to banking and finance. NUS ranks amongst two other law schools in Singapore.

Japan has one school in the global top 50 with The University of Tokyo in joint 21st place. At the University of Tokyo, law is taught together with political science, with students studying the administrative, legislative and judicial branches of the government from a range of angles. A further eight Japanese schools feature in the overall rankings.

South Korea has six programs in the law rankings, with one entrant in the global top 50 - Seoul National University (SNU) in 33rd place. Hong Kong has three programs in the law rankings, with two making it into the top 50: The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in joint 21st place and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 48th place.

Top law schools in Australia and New Zealand

A total of 24 law programs in Australia (20) and New Zealand (4) feature in the subject rankings, with six Australian programs making it into the global top 50.

Australia’s highest-ranked law program can be found at The University of Melbourne, in joint 11th place. Over the past year this law school has been focusing on the legal, ethical and policy challenges of COVID-19 and now offers teaching about the relevant strands of law used during the pandemic and the public health strategies that are employed during a global health crisis.

Other notable Australian universities include: The University of New South Wales (UNSW, 13th), The University of Sydney (14th place), the Australian National University (ANU, joint 17th), Monash University (40th) and The University of Queensland (UQ, 43rd).

New Zealand’s highest entrant this year is The University of Auckland, in 54th place. New Zealand’s second best law school, Victoria University of Wellington (joint 65th) performs particularly well for the research citations per paper indicator, reflecting the high quality of the research done at the university.

Top law schools in Latin America

Latin America has a significant presence in the law rankings this year, with 25 programs included. Four Latin American programs are in the top 50 globally.

Mexico’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) is the highest ranked university in Latin America this year in 34th after rising seven places. UNAM’s law school produces high-level legal research aimed at solving current national and international problems and is home to one of the largest law libraries in Latin America. It is one of two Mexican universities featured in the law school rankings in 2021.

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is the second highest ranked in the region, and one of six of Chile’s universities featured this year. The university’s law school has been teaching students for 125 years and challenges its students to learn and develop abilities from a comprehensive standpoint, encouraging reflection, critical analysis and active participation in the legal and social debate on a global scale.

Argentina and Brazil each have one entry in this year’s top 50, including Argentina’s Universidad de Buenos Aires, which rises three places this year to rank 44th and Brazil’s Universidade de São Paulo (USP, joint 46th). Colombia’s six law programs featured this year include Universidad de Los Andes Colombia, ranked 45th in the world.

Top law schools in Africa and the Middle East

Five African schools are featured in the law rankings, with four of these in South Africa and one in Egypt. The highest ranked school is the University of Cape Town, at 101-150. Also worth a mention is Egypt’s Cairo University (251-250) which earns the highest score for employer reputation in the region.

Only two countries in the Middle East are represented in the law school rankings – Israel and Saudi Arabia, with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv University performing the highest, both placing at 101-150.

Israel’s Hebrew University of Jerusalem has taught the majority of the recipients of the prestigious Israel Prize in Law and Criminology and many of Israel’s past and present Supreme Court Justices attended the law school.

Top electrical engineering schools in the US and Canada

Of the 503 schools ranked in the electrical engineering table, 81 are located in the US and 21 are in Canada, meaning North American schools make up an impressive fifth of the table.

The US is home to the top three electrical engineering schools in the world. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the best of these, with perfect scores in the academic and employer reputation indicators. Harvard University drops off the global top 10 this year to 11th. Other high-ranking US universities include California Institute of Technology (Caltech, 13th), Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech, 14th) and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 15th).

There are three new US entries this year, all ranking 451-500: Clemson University, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC).

Heading north to Canada, two schools feature in the global top 50 with University of Toronto the top-ranking school in 24th place. Located in the centre of Toronto, its electrical and computer engineering department allows students to specialize to help shape their own career paths.

The University of British Columbia also ranks within the global top 50, in 34th, rising four places this year in the mechanical engineering rankings. The University of Waterloo also ranks well this year, in 48th after climbing 52 places.

Top electrical engineering schools in Europe

There are a staggering 183 electrical engineering schools ranked in Europe, with European schools making up half of the top 10.

The UK has an impressive 38 schools featured in the rankings, with several in the top 10. The University of Cambridge (sixth) is top in Europe, earning a near-perfect score for employer reputation. The university’s engineering department ensures that undergraduates gain a strong foundation in all engineering disciplines as well as an in-depth knowledge of electrical engineering.

After the UK, France has the most ranked schools in Europe (19) including CentraleSupélec in 56th place, falling 14 positions this year.

Elsewhere in the top 50, two schools in Germany feature (out of 17 German schools in total). These include Technische Universität München in 17th which boasts one of the largest engineering departments in Germany. The school teaches a well-rounded electrical engineering course, with application orientated teaching and research.

Switzerland has two schools in the global top 10, ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in 5th place and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 9th.

Similarly, Italy features twice in the top 50, with Politecnico di Milano its highest ranked institution in joint 22nd and earning a near-perfect score in the employer reputation indicator. Overall, Italy boasts an impressive 18 schools in the electrical engineering rankings this year.

Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and Sweden’s KTH, Royal Institute of Technology also crack the global top 20, in 16th and joint 18th place respectively. The final European school to make it into the global top 50 is Denmark’s Aalborg University (40th), rising ten places this year.

Top universities for electrical engineering in Australia and New Zealand

The electrical engineering rankings feature 21 schools in Australia and 5 schools in New Zealand.

The highest ranked school in Australia is The University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 33rd place globally. UNSW’s electrical engineering degrees are accredited by Engineers Australia (EA), which gives graduates international recognition for their qualifications under the Washington Accord.

The highest ranked university in New Zealand is the University of Auckland, which places in joint 90th, scoring particularly highly in the citations per paper indicator.

Top universities for electrical engineering in Asia

Asian schools scored highly for electrical engineering courses this year – out of 121 Asian schools ranked, 12 made it into the world top 50.

The highest ranked Asian school is Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, which came in 4th place globally, rising two places this year. NTU’s school of electrical and electronic engineering receives over US$90 million annually in research funding and is backed by 150 faculty members with strong research skills, contributing to its high score in the H-index indicator. The school hosts 13 research centres and has facilities equipped with sophisticated state-of-the-art equipment.

Close behind NTU is National University of Singapore (NUS) in fifth, entering the top 10 this year after climbing seven positions in the electrical engineering rankings.

Mainland China is the most well-represented country in Asia, with 36 schools featuring in the rankings. Tsinghua University (12th) ranks highest in China this year. Tsinghua University’s electronic engineering department aims to make its teaching and research rigorous, diligent, practical, and creative.

Other notable Chinese institutions in the top 50 are Shanghai Jiao Tong University (joint 25th), Peking University (28th) and Zhejiang University (39th, rising eight places this year).

Japan and South Korea are the next most-represented countries in Asia for electrical engineering - Japan has 19 schools in the rankings and South Korea has 18. The University of Tokyo is Japan’s highest ranked school in joint 22nd place, followed by Tokyo Institute of Technology in 32nd. South Korea also features two schools in the global top 50: KAIST - Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (joint 17th) and Seoul National University (SNU) (joint 29th).

Hong Kong’s five featured universities includes two in the world top 50. Its highest ranked is The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST, 20th) earning a great score in the research citations per paper indicator, representing the quality of the school’s research.

Malaysia’s Universiti Malaya (UM, 46th) is the best of the country’s 12 ranked universities offering electronic engineering programs this year. India also performs well with 15 universities featuring, including its highest ranked Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) in joint 54th position.

Top universities for electrical engineering in Latin America

There are no Latin American universities in the top 50 for electrical engineering, but 24 institutions make it into the rankings for this year. Latin America’s highest ranked university is Universidade de São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, which places in 102nd. During USP’s electrical engineering course, students will have the opportunity to carry out research by doing integrated projects and extracurricular activities.

Brazil is the most well-represented Latin American country for electrical engineering, with 10 schools featured. Chile and Mexico have five schools each in the rankings, with Mexico’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) performing well in joint 127th.

Colombia has three universities in this year’s ranking. The Universidad Nacional de Colombia (201-250) is its highest-ranking school, earning a high score in the employer reputation indicator. Argentina has one - Universidad de Buenos Aires (251-300).

Top universities for electrical engineering in Africa and the Middle East

There are eight African universities featured in the electrical engineering rankings this year, with four in Egypt and four in South Africa.

The highest ranked African institution is Cairo University, at 151-200. The school’s graduates have worked in various national and international enterprises, and have influenced the political, social and economic climate in Egypt.

There are 20 universities in the Middle East featured in the electrical engineering rankings and Iran is the most well-represented country with 8 universities in the rankings.

However, Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) is the highest ranked university in the region at joint 86th, earning a high score for the research citations per paper indicator.

The United Arab Emirates has three universities in this year’s rankings with Khalifa University (251-300) its highest ranked. Lebanon and Qatar each have one entry in 2021.

Top business schools in the US and Canada

A large proportion of the world’s best business schools can be found in North America this year, with 105 in the US and 22 in Canada. In North America an impressive 16 universities place in the world top 50 for business.

Four of the US’ business schools are ranked amongst the top 10 worldwide. The best of these is Harvard University – retaining the title of the highest ranked business school in the world for a sixth consecutive year. Harvard Business School earns a perfect score for employer reputation. The school has a strong alumni network, and its business school graduates are estimated to earn a median base salary of US$150,000.

There are 18 Canadian business schools in the ranking, with two universities making it into the global top 50 – the University of Toronto (joint 38th) and the University of British Columbia (joint 45th). Both of these schools earn strong scores for the H-index indicator, reflecting the productivity and impact of the business school’s faculty.

Top business schools in Europe

Europe is the most well-represented region in the business school rankings, with 216 schools ranked, including six in the top 10.

INSEAD is ranked as the best business school in continental Europe for the third year running: one of France’s 13 institutions featured this year. An international business school, INSEAD has campuses in France, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and San Francisco. It earns a perfect score in academic reputation this year, with the course placing huge value on diversity.

London Business School is once again the UK’s best institution, ranking third. It is one of the 62 UK business schools in the ranking this year, seven of which are in the top 50. The University of Oxford enters the top ten this year, overtaking the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE,11th). Another notable mover in the index this year is Imperial College London, dropping 10 places to 34th.

In Spain, IESE Business School makes an improvement in the index this year, rising four places to 25th. However, it is ESADE Business School one again that takes the top spot, in 21st. ESADE is known for the quality of its research and education, earning its highest score in the research citations per paper indicator. The school’s Institute for Social Innovation produces research used by companies, social entrepreneurs, NGOs and non-profit organizations.

Copenhagen Business School (15th) is one of Denmark’s five universities featured this year. The Netherlands’ Erasmus University Rotterdam (16th) ranks amongst its 11 universities, three of which are in the global top 100 for business. Other notable European top 50 business schools include France’s ESSEC Business School, Paris (33rd) and Austria’s WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) in 42nd.

Top business schools in Asia

There are 110 Asian business schools in the rankings this year, including 11 in the global top 50.

The highest-ranked school in Asia is the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 12th place globally. NUS earns a high score for academic reputation this year. It has championed transparency during the COVID-19 pandemic, making its student feedback forms open to the entire community in order to continuously improve its teaching standards.

Two other Singaporean schools made it into the top 50 (out of four ranked schools) - Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 20th (rising four places this year) and Singapore Management University in joint 38th.

Mainland China is the best represented region in Asia for business schools, with 21 institutions in the rankings. Four of these are in the global top 50: Tsinghua University (31st), Peking University (35th), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (joint 36th) and Fudan University in 50th place.

Hong Kong also has a significant presence in the global top 50, with seven business schools featured and their highest ranked school, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in joint 22nd place. HKUST’s business courses cover a wide range of topics, from Chinese business to Asian financial markets to entrepreneurship.

Two schools in South Korea round out the Asian presence in the global top 50 - Seoul National University (SNU) in 41st place and Korea University in 48th.

Two Indian institutions, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) – Ahmedabad and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) – Bangalore place within the global top 100, ranking at joint 76th and joint 80th respectively.

Top business schools in Australia and New Zealand

There are 23 business schools from Australia and seven from New Zealand featured in this years’ rankings.

Australia’s highest ranked program can be found at The University of Melbourne, which comes in 26th place globally. The University of Melbourne prepares graduates for a successful career in business, combining theoretical teaching with real life studies and even offering industry integration programs.

Other Australian schools in the global top 50 are The University of New South Wales (UNSW, dropping six places to 40th), The University of Sydney (43rd) and Monash University (joint 45th).

New Zealand has no business schools in the global top 50, but their highest ranked school, The University of Auckland (joint 94th) scores highly in the research citations per paper and the H-index indicators. It is home to 10 research and engagement centers, including the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Top business schools in Latin America

There are 29 Latin American business schools featured in the rankings this year.

Chile’s Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (51st) is the highest ranked university in Latin America this year, earning a particularly high score for employer reputation. Chile has a total of six universities in the index this year, three of which are in the world top 100.

Colombia is the most well represented Latin American country with 11 business schools in the rankings. One of these ranks in the top 100: Universidad de Los Andes Colombia (Uniandes) in 89th, scoring highly in the research citations per paper and H-index indicators.

Brazil’s six entries this year include Universidade de São Paulo (USP, joint 90th). USP has quickly achieved a leading role in many different fields as a research center and is responsible for around 20 percent of all Brazilian academic output, earning a high score for the H-index indicator this year.

Two world-class business schools are found in Argentina this year: Universidad de Buenos Aires (151-200) and Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (351- 400). Peru has three, including two new entries in 2021: Universidad del Pacifico (351-400) and Universidad ESAN (501-550).

Costa Rica also brings a new entry to the index this year, with INCAE Business School coming in at 451-500. It earns a high score for academic reputation.

Top business schools in Africa and the Middle East

There are six African universities in the business school rankings, with three universities in Egypt and three universities in South Africa.

The highest ranked university on the continent is The American University in Cairo, ranked at 201-250. The business course at the American University in Cairo prepares students for a career in business, embedding real-world industry experience throughout the curriculum.

15 Middle Eastern schools feature in the rankings, with Lebanon’s American University of Beirut (AUB) ranking the highest at 151-200, rising up to 50 places this year.

The United Arab Emirates’ American University of Sharjah and Saudi Arabia’s King Abdul Aziz University (KAU) come in a close second place, with both schools ranking 201-250 for business this year.

Jordan, Qatar and Oman each have one business school in this year’s rankings and Kuwait’s new entry, American University of the Middle East (AUM) places at 451-500.
