The SHCM has three first-grade programs in PERFORMING(including Composition,Performing & Theory), MUSICOLOGY, and DRAMA & FILM Studies (interdisciplinary), among which the PERFORMING & MUSICOLOGY program ranked No. 1 among its counterparts in China. Through its 15 departments, the SHCM offers seven major programs for undergraduate students, including musicology, composition and composition theory, music performance, recording art, art administration, digital media art, and art & technology. In addition, it provides 76 research fields for master’s students, and 23 for doctoral candidates.
Faculty members and students of SHCM have won top awards in more than 2,000 international music competitions, such as the Besançon International Symphony Composition Competition (1st Prize winner: Xu Shuya), BBC Cardiff Singer of the World (Yang Guang, Shen Yang), Paganini International Violin Competition (Huang Mengla), Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition (Liu Ruibin), International ARD Competition (Simply Quartet), International Franz Liszt Piano Competition (Sun Yingdi), International Beethoven Competition (Yin Cunmo), Marguerite LONG International Piano Competition (Li Jian, Song Siheng), Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition (Shen Ziyu), Queen Sonja International Music Competition (Liao Changyong), International Singing Competition of Toulouse (Liao Changyong), International Tchaikovsky Competition (Li La), etc.
Meanwhile, some other SHCM members also stand out in various top-level music events. For example, Wang Zhi-Jong, a violin faculty member at the SHCM, received a nomination for best concerto performance from the International Classical Music Awards 2018; Du Yun was nominated for the Best Contemporary Classical Composition of the 61st Grammy Awards; Shen Ye became the first Chinese composer under contract to German music publisher Breitkopf & Härtel in its 300 years of history. In addition, a large number of faculty members and alumni of the SHCM are active in many world-renowned orchestras and art organizations, such as the Metropolitan Opera House and the Zurich Opera House, as a conductor or principal performer. It is also worth noting that the presidents of five among the 12 existing independent music conservatories in China are SHCM alumni.
