Best Study Spots in Brisbane

Submitted by carwills4455@g… on Tue, 06/19/2018 - 16:01

Brisbane, the home of three major universities, is an energetic city with stunning riverside views and gardens. With one of the highest student ratios of any entry in the QS Best Student Cities ranking, the student buzz and atmosphere it provides is undeniable.

Like any busy student, you likely spend hours on end in lecture halls and stuffy library cubicles. But there’s no need to feel limited by the perimeters of campus - with a wide variety of cafés, libraries, and outdoor spaces throughout Brisbane, there are plenty of options to get out and explore while also buckling down on reading those textbooks. Ditch the desk, get your creative juices flowing, and discover all of the spaces conducive to getting work done in this beautiful city.

State Library of Queensland

A favorable student spot, the SLQ is a historic building overlooking the picturesque Brisbane River. Take a seat in the Red Box Room; an intimate space with floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of the river and central business district. The library is also closely situated to the Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art —the perfect spot to get your culture fix during a study break (and it’s free entry!). The building also has a café, speedy Wi-Fi, free library cards, and a number of meeting rooms and lounges.

Brisbane Square Library

This library offers a variety of facilities, including: free Wi-Fi, study rooms, computer access, printing and photocopying, a historic gallery, and a number of different lounges and seated areas. The meeting rooms can be booked for a maximum of two hours a day and are equipped with data projectors, electronic whiteboards, a kitchenette, and a fridge (for study snacks of course)—perfect for getting group work done. Sign up for a free library card and get access to everything this space has to offer.

New Farm Park

Not only does this park showcase spectacular river views, it also offers free Wi-Fi. Take a seat by the water’s edge and watch the boats pass by, all while smashing out some work. What better way to get inspired than by a little bit of fresh air? There’s also a library located inside the park.

Brisbane Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens set the perfect scene for diving into some reading, with Wi-Fi available in the Japanese Garden, café, and administration building. However, I recommend ditching the electronics and unplugging in order to fully appreciate the beauty of these gardens. There are enough free deck chairs to go around, or better yet, bring a picnic blanket and relax in a shady spot.

Roma Street Parkland

Located a quick 20-minute tram ride away from The University of Queensland, this green space offers designer gardens, deck chairs, cafés, and historical monuments. With such close proximity to the central business district, its 16 hectares of stunning parklands make for the perfect getaway when you’re in need of an escape from city life.

Brew Café and Wine Bar

This little hidden gem, nestled in a funky lane in the central business district, is equipped with long wooden tables to sprawl out on and a seriously good Wi-Fi. Whether you’re after a decadent dessert, smashed avo toast, or a savory burger, your taste buds will be thanking you after a study session here

Avid Reader

A book shop AND a café? This must be a dream. This is the ideal study spot for those looking for a relaxed, quiet atmosphere. Enjoy the smell of new books, fast Wi-Fi, a seasonal and locally-sourced menu, and freshly brewed coffee.

Sol Breads

Situated in Brisbane’s quirky West End, this bakery is known for their range of organically-based nutritious bread, with fresh menu choices that won’t break the bank. Order some herbal tea and grab a spot at one of the spacious wooden tables available.

Sassafras Canteen

For those looking for both a caffeine and vitamin D fix, grab a seat in the outdoor courtyard at this cottage-inspired café. Located in the Paddington area, this spot is worth the trip outside of the central business district for their iconic breakfast menu and fruit frappes.

Compos Coffee

Located a few blocks from New Farm Park, this trendy café offers quality, modern Australian breakfast options. Order their famous in-house waffles or the epic breakfast bacon burger, paired with a fresh cup of ethically-sourced coffee. There’s also a meeting room which is available to book from Monday to Friday, ideal for group sessions.

Best Study Spots in Melbourne

Submitted by carwills4455@g… on Tue, 06/19/2018 - 12:35

As a busy student with no shortage of deadlines and to-do lists, sometimes lacking motivation actually has everything to do with the atmosphere of your study space. Never underestimate the power of a change in scenery—it can do wonders for your mood and motivation. Stepping away from your usual study spot can kick start enthusiasm and inspiration you didn’t know was in you.

Luckily, I’ve got you covered with a hefty list of libraries, cafés, and public spaces in Melbourne where the coffee is strong and the Wi-Fi signal is stronger. With every corner you turn, you will without a doubt find a new nook worth putting your feet up at, accompanied with a large flat white. Your days of struggling to find a cubicle in the university library are over...

Melbourne City Library

Misery loves company, so why not get some work done in one of the many libraries in the city? Studying definitely feels a bit more bearable when you realize so many people are in the same boat. Depending on your location, there are plenty of local libraries, for example the City Library which has six branches located in different areas. Specifically, the Library at the Dock showcases beautiful views of the harbor (which hopefully won’t worsen your procrastination).

State Library of Victoria

Located in central Melbourne, the State Library of Victoria is a popular spot with students due to its stunning architecture and variety of workspaces, with options for those like dead silence as well as those who prefer a little background noise. Get those brain juices flowing and take advantage of the speedy Wi-Fi, computers and printers, extensive research resources, and selection of books available.

Queensberry Pour House

For unlimited coffee for only a few bucks (yes, you read that right), pull up a chair at Queensberry Pour House, where the staff put a lot of emphasis on making people feel at home. The natural light beaming from the floor-to-ceiling windows is sure to feel like a great upgrade from your stuffy dorm room.

The Pancake Parlour

If you’re a night owl looking for a late night cramming session that will also satisfy your sweet tooth, check out The Pancake Parlour for fresh pancake and crepe choices until 3am on the weekends (they also have student deals).

Mr. Tulk

A prime location for all RMIT and University of Melbourne students, Mr Tulk (named after the State Library’s first ever librarian) is a very spacious café ideal for study sessions with a few friends. Whether you want to sip on a latte or glass of vino (Friday happy hour is from 5:30-6:30, enough said), this is the perfect spot to chow down on some brain food from their breakfast, lunch, or dinner menu. It’s definitely not hard to spend the whole day getting some work done here.

Mantra Lounge

Or for the more health conscious among you, Mantra Lounge’s vegan menu and upstairs gallery has become a favorite spot for students looking for a place to set up shop for the day.

Seven Seeds

Another ideal location for group work is Seven Seeds, a converted warehouse which is perfect for smashing out a project, with an extremely effective vibe for studying.

Royal Botanical Gardens

Studying doesn’t mean having to be cooped up indoors for hours on end; there are a ton of outdoor spaces and parks which provide relaxing atmospheres for getting some work done. Get away from the computer screen for a few hours and grab your notepad for an electronics-free study sesh out in the sunshine. The Royal Botanical Gardens, located conveniently right outside the central business district, is a great spot to grab your cue cards and enjoy the outdoor scenery, and there are heaps of other parks around the city.

Federation Square

Across the road from Flinders Street Station, Federation Square is the heart of Melbourne’s major cultural attractions. Fed Square has become the heart and soul of Melbourne, and is the perfect spot to get some fresh air while surfing the net with the free Wi-Fi. You can also people watch your heart out at this modern piazza space and take in the buzz of the city.

Queen Victoria Market

Another public space that offers free, speedy Wi-Fi is Queen Victoria Market. If you’re someone who doesn’t get bothered by hustle and bustle, this space offers an energetic atmosphere ideal for kicking back with a cup of coffee. It might be a good idea to bring along some headphones, though, to avoid being too distracted by background noise.

Submitted by sponsored.cont… on Mon, 06/18/2018 - 15:48

LUISS Guido Carli

CBI/Pearson

LUISS Guido Carli

Submitted by ra2044@columbia.edu on Mon, 06/18/2018 - 15:37
