这个夏天,提升自己就业前景的六种方法

Submitted by ella@inspiring… on Tue, 06/12/2018 - 11:44

New Zealand has eight entries in the QS World University Rankings® 2019, all ranked in the global top 500, based on a methodology which assesses each university’s reputation among employers and academics, as well as its research impact (citations per faculty member) and other factors.

8. Auckland University of Technology

Ranked joint 464th in the world in 2019, Auckland University of Technology (AUT) was established in 1895 as the Auckland Technical School, and today boasts the highest score of any of the best universities in New Zealand for the percentage of international students indicator, ranked 23rd in the world.

7. Massey University

Massey University, based in the city of Palmerton North on the North Island, has fallen slightly in this year’s ranking to joint 332nd, but is nonetheless consistently found in the global top 350. It’s the only university in New Zealand to offer courses in aviation, dispute resolution, veterinary medicine, and nanoscience.

6. Lincoln University

Up two places to rank joint 317th in the world this year alongside the Czech Republic’s Charles University, Lincoln University receives strong scores for its percentages of both international students and faculty members, and is also rated in the global top 50 for agriculture as of the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject.

5. University of Waikato

Another of the best universities in New Zealand to improve its position this year is the University of Waikato, up 18 places to rank 274th in the world in 2019. The university is chiefly based in the city of Hamilton on the North Island, and also operates a campus in Tauranga.

4. University of Canterbury

Based in Christchurch, the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island, the University of Canterbury is ranked joint 231st this year and is one of the country’s oldest universities, having been founded in 1873 as Canterbury College. It now has a student population of around 14,000, made up of 80 nationalities.

3. Victoria University of Wellington

Victoria University of Wellington was established in 1897 and is ranked joint 221st in the world alongside France’s Sciences Po this year. It also features in the global top 100 for 12 subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, including the top 50 for law, library and information management, and hospitality.

2. University of Otago

Down slightly this year to rank joint 175th in the world alongside two other universities, the University of Otago is the oldest institution in New Zealand, having been established almost 150 years ago in 1869. It’s mainly based in Dunedin, and has about 20,838 students, including 2,837 international students.

1. University of Auckland

The number one among the best universities in New Zealand continues to be the University of Auckland, despite it falling three places this year to now rank 85th in the world. It achieves its best rank in the academic reputation indicator.

The country’s largest university (with 41,866 students), it’s in the global top 50 for 18 subjects as of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018, including archaeology, nursing and business.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has made history, topping the QS World University Rankings for the seventh consecutive year. No other university has managed such a long run at the top.

This is just one of several eye-catching stories and insights in this year’s ranking, which features 1,000 of the world’s finest universities. Watch the video below for more information about this year’s top 10.

US universities continue to dominate

As you can see from the above video, MIT isn’t the only institution from the US to continue to enjoy a position at the top of the table. Stanford University, Harvard University and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) all retain their positions at second, third and fourth in the world respectively.

More US universities have risen than fallen in this year’s ranking, with Yale University, Columbia University and the University of Michigan all climbing at least one place in the world’s top 20.

For more information about the top universities in the US, watch the video below.

Stability for top UK universities

After a couple of rocky years for UK universities, the 2019 ranking is one of stability. As with the US, the UK sees more universities climb than fall, although two of the British universities included in the top 10 have slipped since last year.

One of those is the University of Cambridge, which has been overtaken in the top five by its arch-rival the University of Oxford. Professor Louise Richardson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, was delighted by Oxford’s rise in the rankings this year. She said: “We owe this result to the talent and commitment of our academic staff and to our network of research collaborators across the continent and across the Globe.

“We are particularly proud to have secured the top spot in Europe and very much hope that we will be able to maintain this position as the UK withdraws from the European Union.”

Oxford has recently come under fire after it was revealed that eight of its 29 colleges accepted fewer than three black students in the last three years. Labour MP David Lammy said: “This is social apartheid and it is utterly unrepresentative of life in modern Britain.”

Cambridge has faced similar criticisms, with six of its 29 undergraduate colleges admitting fewer than 10 black British or mixed-race students between 2012 and 2016.

An empty top 20 for Australia

Last year, the Australian National University broke into the global top 20 to become the only institution from Down Under in the top 20. Unfortunately, the good times didn’t last long, with ANU slipping four places this year. It’s not all bad news though, as five of the seven Australian universities to feature within the top 100 have either improved or maintained their position since last year. Learn more in the video below.

Toronto pulls clear in Canada

Canada continues to be an attractive alternative to studying in the US, but there are no big gains made by Canadian universities this year. The University of Toronto continues to be the highest-ranked institution in the country, five places higher than McGill University. The gap between the two has widened since last year by four places. Although there are now three Canadian universities in the global top 50, one more than last year, there aren’t any other institutions from the country in the top 100, as the University of Alberta has dropped from joint 90th to 109th this year.

Save some money and study in Germany

German universities may be some way from competing with the best in continental Europe, with none of the country’s institutions cracking the top 50 this year, but the promise of free tuition at nearly all of the country’s top universities means there’ll always be interest from international students. Technische Universität München remains the best university in the country.

World University Rankings – Frequently Asked Questions

Submitted by sabrina@qs.com on Wed, 06/06/2018 - 13:42

Have you ever wondered how world university rankings are created, what they can (and can’t) tell you, and how to use them? With the QS World University Rankings® 2020 out now, we thought we’d answer some of the most common questions asked on this topic.

What are world university rankings?

World university rankings provide annually updated listings of the top universities in the world, compiled using data from trusted sources. There are a number of different world university rankings available, of which the best-known and most-used include the QS World University Rankings, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) – commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking. There are also specialized world university rankings, including some dedicated to specific subjects, and others dedicated to a particular area of performance, such as the Webometrics ranking, which assesses universities’ online presence and impact.

How are universities assessed?

This varies depending on the ranking – and it’s advisable to always consult the methodology when considering the results. The QS World University Rankings assesses universities using six performance indicators, which each carry a different weighting when calculating overall scores. These indicators are: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), student-to-faculty ratio (20%), research citations per faculty member (20%), proportion of international faculty (5%) and proportion of international students (5%). The Times Higher Education ranking uses a total of 13 performance indicators, including some, but not all of the same indicators used by QS, and applies slightly different weightings when calculating the final scores. The ARWU ranking has a stronger focus on research performance, and also considers factors such as the number of staff and alumni who have received Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.

How can I use the rankings to help me to choose a university?

World university rankings can be used to help you shortlist universities, gain additional information about universities you’re already considering, or directly compare two or more institutions in specific areas of performance. Subject-specific editions such as the QS World University Rankings by Subject can be particularly useful for students attempting to identify leading institutions in a particular field. You can personalize the results, filtering by location and/or performance indicator, depending on what’s most important to you.

How much importance should I place on rankings when choosing a university?

The amount of importance you give to the rankings is up to you and your personal preference. This will largely depend on how far the criteria used to create the rankings match your own priorities, and how keen you are to study at a highly ranked university. Based on our own research, we’ve found that many students use rankings as a quick way to check the reputation of a university, while many also believe rankings can provide a rough gauge of educational quality, alongside other sources.

Although the rankings can be a useful tool, you should never base your university choice entirely on the results, as statistics can’t give you the full picture of what it’s actually like to study at a university. After consulting the rankings, it’s recommended that you spend time researching the university’s location and ethos, student life and course content – as well as checking the admission requirements and costs. You might find that a university which is not so highly ranked (or not ranked at all – see below), is the best fit for you and your particular circumstances and priorities.

How many universities are ranked?

The 2020 edition of the QS World University Rankings features 1,000 universities around the world. Times Higher Education ranks 1,250 institutions, while the Shanghai Ranking, or ARWU, ranks the top 500. Each of the ranking organizations collects data on a much greater number of universities – for instance, QS currently assesses around 4,700 institutions, and ARWU over 1,200 – but only publishes the ranking positions of those at the top of the range.

When are the world university rankings released?

The QS World University Rankings are released annually in June, and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings are released annually in September. Both QS and THE also release additional rankings, dedicated to particular subjects and regions, throughout the year. The Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) is released slightly earlier, with the latest results published on 15 August 2018.

What makes a university eligible to be considered?

To be eligible for inclusion in the QS World University Rankings, a university must teach at multiple study levels (i.e. both undergraduate and postgraduate), and conduct work in at least two of five possible faculty areas (arts and humanities; engineering and technology; social sciences and management; natural sciences; life sciences and medicine).

Similar criteria apply for the Times Higher Education ranking: institutions are excluded if they do not teach at undergraduate level, or if their research output falls below a certain threshold. ARWU considers all universities with Nobel laureates, Fields Medal recipients, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature or Science, or a significant number of papers indexed in the Science Citation Index or Social Science Citation Index.

Why isn’t my university featured in the world university rankings?

There are tens of thousands of universities in the world and unfortunately it’s simply not possible to rank every single one of them. It’s important to remember that even making it to the lowest level of the world university rankings is a great achievement, putting an institution within the top two to five percent worldwide. If an institution isn’t featured, this doesn’t mean it’s ‘bad’ – it just isn’t within this very top tier.

If you’re confused by the exclusion of a particularly prestigious institution, it may be that the university isn’t eligible for inclusion in the rankings, due to being too specialized, only teaching at one level, or not producing enough highly cited research (see above). Many of the schools that don’t feature in the overall world university rankings do get a chance to shine in the regional rankings and/or the subject rankings. For example, QS’s performing arts ranking includes many specialized schools that are not eligible for inclusion in the overall rankings, but which excel in this particular field.

Are the world university rankings biased towards English-speaking universities?

It’s easy to think this could be the case, due to the large numbers of universities from Anglophone countries (particularly the US and UK) at the top of the rankings. However, there is no deliberate bias towards English-speaking institutions, and indeed the rankings organizations are committed to making the rankings as fair and accurate as possible. In 2015, for example, QS improved the way in which research citations are assessed, to balance out an existing bias in favor of science-focused institutions. In an attempt to provide greater visibility to universities outside of the nations which typically dominate the tables, QS also publishes regional rankings for Asia, Latin America, the Arab region, Emerging Europe and Central Asia (EECA) and the BRICS countries.

I can see that this university is ranked 501-510. What is its exact ranking?

In the QS World University Rankings, only the top 500 institutions are given individual ranking positions (the same applies to the top 200 in the Times Higher Education ranking). After this, the universities are grouped into bands, starting from 501-510 in the QS ranking and continuing until 801-1000.

Precise ranking positions are not published, due to the difficulty of accurately differentiating at this level. If you do want more in-depth information about the university, click on its name in the ranking table – this will bring you to a profile page, where you’ll be able to see if it appears in any of the regional or subject rankings. It may also have been evaluated through the QS Stars rating service, which provides an in-depth assessment of university performance in eight categories. You could also search online for a national ranking of universities in your chosen study destination.

Why are universities sometimes listed in a different order in other ranking tables?

This is caused by the different methodologies used to compile each ranking. You may even find there are variations in the results published by a single organization. QS uses slightly different methodologies for the overall world rankings, subject rankings and regional rankings – which can mean these place universities in a different order.

As an example, Seoul National University (SNU) is South Korea’s highest-ranked in the QS World University Rankings (at 37th), but KAIST - Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology is ranked higher in the QS Asia University Rankings 2019.

This is due to the different methodologies used to compile these rankings, and clearly gives you an idea that these particular institutions are quite neck and neck with each other.

Top Universities in the US 2019

Submitted by craig@qs.com on Wed, 06/06/2018 - 12:55

Click here to view the latest version of this article, based on the QS World University Rankings® 2020.

For yet another year, US universities dominate the QS World University Rankings, with 157 institutions ranked in the 2019 edition in total. Of these, 65 have improved upon their position since last year, while 47 have maintained their position.

Some of those 47 can be found at the very top of the table, with the top four universities both globally and in the US remaining unchanged since last year. Find out more about the best universities in the US below.

10. University of Pennsylvania

A non-mover at 19th globally, the University of Pennsylvania has climbed into the top 10 in the US this year, due to Johns Hopkins University falling four places to 21st. It performs particularly well for its ratio of students to faculty members, one of the six indicators used to compile the ranking, scoring 100 out of 100 and ranking 15th in the world.

9. Columbia University

Up two places this year to 16th in the world, Columbia University also achieves a perfect score of 100 for its student/faculty ratio. Columbia was established in 1754 and has produced many notable alumni, including three US presidents: Barack Obama, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt.

8. Yale University

Ranked 15th in the world this year, Yale University is known for its highly selective law school. Yale was established in 1701 and awarded the first PhD in the US in 1861. It’s ranked fifth in the world for its student/faculty ratio and ninth for its reputation among academics.

7. Cornell University

A non-mover at 14th this year, Cornell University is based in Ithaca, New York. It was the first university in the US to award a veterinary medicine degree and is currently ranked second in the world for veterinary science in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018.

6. Princeton University

As with Cornell and the four universities above it, there’s no movement from Princeton University in this year’s ranking, as it continues to be the 13th best university in the world. As well as being one of the country's best universities, it's also one of the oldest in the US, having been founded in 1746. Princeton is considered especially prestigious for the arts and humanities, a broad subject area for which its ranked seventh in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018.

5. University of Chicago

The University of Chicago continues to hold down a place in the world's 10 best universities this year, achieving its highest score for its reputation among academics. Established in 1890, the university is known for its strong focus on research. For example, the university’s physics department is known for developing the world’s first man-made, self-sustaining nuclear reaction.

4. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

Caltech is the first of four US universities which remain firmly lodged as the world’s top four academic institutions for another year. Known as a leading tech school, Caltech is located in the city of Pasadena, California and is the smallest university in the US top 10.

It’s ranked fifth in the world for the citations per faculty, a measure of research impact. This is actually a drop of one place since last year, making Caltech one of the 118 US universities to see their rank for this indicator drop, suggesting the US is losing its dominance in the worlds of research and academic writing.

3. Harvard University

Harvard University retains its position of third in the QS World University Rankings this year. The oldest university in the country, dating back to 1636, Harvard has a large, residential campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is well respected in a broad range of fields, including law, business and medicine.

2. Stanford University

Continuing to rank second in both the QS World University Rankings and the US this year is Stanford University. Based in the center of Silicon Valley in California, Stanford is renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit and business courses. Its alumni include many successful entrepreneurs such as the founders or co-founders of Netflix, YouTube, WhatsApp and Google.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

It really couldn’t be anyone else, could it? For a record-breaking seventh consecutive year, MIT has been crowned the best university in the world, helped by the fact it scores a perfect 100 for four of the six indicators used to compile the ranking. No other institution manages this.

MIT also achieves a world-leading score for citations per faculty and performs impressively well for its international student ratio.
