Top 10 Free Things to Do in Sydney

Submitted by carwills4455@g… on Fri, 06/01/2018 - 16:21

Sydney is without a doubt one of the best cities to study abroad in: with stunning coastline and beaches, national parks and bustling nightlife, you’ll never have a shortage of study break activities. After all, what’s better than hitting the beach post-lecture?

Unfortunately, Sydney is also one of the most expensive cities in the world, but don’t let that scare you off. Between the abundance of outdoor activities, student discounts, and places offering free admission, there are heaps of free things to do in Sydney that won’t break your student budget. Here are 10 of our favorites.

Bondi to Coogee coastal walk

By far my favorite thing to do in Sydney is the spectacular Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. With every corner you turn, you’ll be pulling out your camera to snap yet another Insta-worthy picture. The walk takes around two hours, but with all the beaches, cafes, rock pools, and lookout points along the way, you’ll want to block out a whole day if you can.

Sydney Opera House

What would a trip to Sydney be without a trip to the world-famous Opera House? Take a stroll down the boardwalk and enjoy the picturesque harbor view, with the Sydney Harbor Bridge in the distance.

Grab a beer at the Opera Bar (although, it’ll cost you for that view), or take a walk around the entire building to see the iconic architecture of the building from every angle.

Walk across the Sydney Harbor Bridge

Just across the pond from the Opera House, stands the iconic Sydney Harbor Bridge. Save a few hundred dollars on the bridge climb and walk across the bridge to get the same stunning views of the harbor and city skyline.

Take the ferry to Manly

While the ferry ride will cost you a few dollars, once you arrive at Manly there’s no need break out the wallet again (except for an ice cream, of course). On the trip over, passing both the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Opera House, you can enjoy what’s (in my opinion) the best view of the city.

Once you arrive in Manly, grab a surfboard, chill at the beach, or enjoy the local artists busking in the streets. If you visit on the weekend, you can catch the Manly Market Place showcasing unique products from local businesses.

Manly to Spit Bridge Walk

Once you take the ferry over to Manly, this three-hour roundtrip oceanfront walk is the perfect activity before hitting Manly Beach for the day. Between May and November, you can even spot migrating whales in the distance as they make their way along the NSW coast.

The ending point of this journey, North Head Lookout, showcases stunning ocean views with the Sydney skyline in the distance. This lookout is also one of the best places in Sydney to catch the sunset.

Dive into some culture

Entry to both the Art Gallery of NSW and Museum of Contemporary Art are completely free, with several different exhibitions and events available, and the MCA offers free guided tours daily. The Rocks Discovery Museum, rich in aboriginal history, is also free to enter and located in one of Sydney’s oldest neighborhoods.

Get back to nature

While Sydney is known for its city life, there’s no shortage of parks and gardens to get your nature fix. The Royal National Park is home to over 100km of walking tracks, picnic sites, and secluded beaches. Similarly, the Royal Botanical Gardens showcases immaculately kept gardens right in the heart of the city, and also offers free tours.

Take in the million-dollar view at Observatory Hill

It’s hard to beat the view from Observatory Hill, a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. I know what you’re thinking…yet another view of the city? Trust me, this one is a must see!

Stick around until dark and take a look at the stars through one of the telescopes for a small fee.

Take a free walking tour

With a city as big and fast-paced as Sydney, it’s intimidating not knowing your way around when you first arrive. Especially if you’re planning on settling down for a while, a free city tour is the perfect way to get you familiar with the area.

A three-hour guided tour will show you all of the highlights and hot-spots in town. Also, check out the free shuttle bus that runs to central spots in the CBD.

Check out the free festivals

Depending on the time of year you’re visiting, there are heaps of free festivals and cultural events happening throughout city. Watch some epic fireworks on New Year’s Eve, catch the Mardi Gras parade, be amazed by the light festival at Vivid Sydney, or enjoy the culture and art of The Sydney Festival. Hopefully the timing of your visit to Sydney is good and you can catch at least one of these amazing events.

Submitted by sponsored.cont… on Fri, 06/01/2018 - 09:27

Submitted by info@manhattan… on Thu, 05/31/2018 - 14:40

Major philosophical (i)____ about morality, identity and rationality, for example, can often be (ii)____ by thought experiments: short and simple expositions that pose an abstract and complex problem in a concrete manner with all the (iii)____ factors removed.

Blank (i)
A. certitudes
B. dilemmas
C. dogmas

Blank (ii)
D. mimicked
E. illuminated
F. evoked

Blank (iii)
G. extraneous
H. inherent
I. pivotal

逆向思考,如果这些问题是“abstract and complex(抽象而复杂的)”,它们就不太可能是“dogmas(教义)”或“certitudes(确切的东西)”,这样第一个空白处最合适填写的便是“dilemmas(隐晦难懂的事情)”这个选项。

A highly intelligent person often thinks (i)____; a few snippets of information can trigger a (ii)____ conclusion that might not stand up to closer, and (iii)____, scrutiny.

Blank (i)
A. too deeply
B. too warily
C. too quickly

Blank (ii)
D. firm
E. labored
F. hasty

Blank (iii)
G. slower
H. precipitous
I. overt

Best Study Spots in Perth

Submitted by carwills4455@g… on Thu, 05/31/2018 - 12:20

There’s only so much work you can get done perched on the cramped desk in your gloomy dorm room or squeezed into a corner of the library. A change in scenery can really help get those productive and creative juices flowing however (providing there’s reliable Wi-Fi, of course), which is why I’ve made it my mission to compile a list of the best places in Perth to get your study on.

Never underestimate the power of a large flat white at a cozy café to help motivate you to get things done. With strong coffee, tasty treats, brilliant architecture, and beautiful outdoor spaces, there are plenty of places to study in which will help relieve some of that stress and make your studying bearable.

Perth Cultural Centre

Nestled in-between the CBD and Northbridge, the Perth Cultural Centre is a public environment that showcases an abundance of art and culture.

There are various different spots where you can sit and work at the Perth Cultural Centre. On a sunny day, you can take a seat outside in the James St Amphitheatre or find natural tranquility at the Urban Wetland, all while taking in the vibrant public artwork. The wide variety means we could have almost made this entire list of best study spots in Perth purely about the Cultural Centre.

While this outdoor oasis can be busy, it still provides a less hectic environment than campus for sitting back and being productive. This area offers free Wi-Fi in all outdoor zones, as a part of the free Wi-Fi throughout Perth CBD.

State Library of Western Australia

If you’re sick of your university library (because let’s face it, who isn’t?), there are plenty of other library spaces that likely won’t be as jam-packed full of students every day. Located within the Perth Cultural Centre, the State Library of Western Australia is the perfect spot for a study session. Here you’ll find a relaxing, ambient atmosphere with a ton of resources on WA heritage if you’re keen on a study break.

The library has a cozy café on the ground floor where you can grab a study snack, and the fourth floor has an amazing view of the city’s architecture (but don’t let that distract you from your work). The library offers a ton of eResources, free Wi-Fi, printing and copying services, free library cards, and study rooms available to book for group sessions.

Perth City Library

Similarly, there is also the Perth City Library, located in the heart of the metropolitan area. Built in 2016, the modern architecture, cafes, and outdoor terrace here make it the ideal location to get work done.

This is truly the best study spot in Perth for a peaceful, reflective experience — you may even want to hang out here on your days off (okay, maybe not!).

Stirling Gardens

What better way to relieve some study stress than by getting outside and feeling a fresh breeze while soaking up some Vitamin D? Forget indoor cubicles—there’s truly no better way to study on a sunny Perth day (which is most days of the year).

Located right outside the CBD on the way to Elizabeth Quay, Stirling Gardens is a relaxing space full of beautiful vegetation and flowers, water elements, and shady spots to kick back with a textbook.

Hyde Park

Staying outside on our list of best study spots in Perth, Hyde Park is another stunning outdoor space with lakes, a variety of non-native trees (autumn is the best time to visit to witness the leaves changing colours), a ton of grassy space, and sheltered gazebos.

Kings Park

A few minutes down the road from Hyde Park, Kings Park offers a panoramic city view and botanical gardens; a perfect spot to grab lunch at the café in between readings. While these outdoor spaces do not offer free Wi-Fi, they’re one of the best study spots in Perth to get readings done without any electronic distractions.

The Tenth State

The Tenth State, located close to The University of Western Australia, is a convenient location for students to escape campus life. It doubles as a trendy homeware boutique store, with an intimate backroom surrounded by a variety of plants—so dreamy!

Come early to secure a spot and reward yourself to a homemade pastry after completing that tough assignment.

Canvas Café

If you’re in the Fremantle Area, Canvas Café is a hidden gem ideal for those looking to focus in a quiet atmosphere. With a tranquil outdoor courtyard, the combination of sunshine and leafy trees makes it the perfect spot, particularly if you need to get a lot of work done. This café is located at the Fremantle Arts Centre, meaning you can check out the artwork to clear your mind after an intense study session.

Baylon Café

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the CBD, Leederville is an area located five minutes outside the city, which is home to no shortage of trendy cafes and laptop-friendly workspaces. If you look hard enough, off the beaten track lies Baylon Café, equipped with outdoor seating, savory treats, and retro vibes.

Foam Café

The last place on our list of best study spots in Perth is Foam Café, which is ideal for night owls as it has a range of both healthy (and not so healthy) locally sourced options to choose from until 10pm.

Best Beaches in Sydney

Submitted by megandye@mac.com on Thu, 05/31/2018 - 11:53

From Sydney’s beautiful harbor, with its iconic bridge and opera house, to the world-famous Bondi Beach, there are plenty of reasons why Sydney is one of the most desirable cities in the world for studying abroad. However, Bondi Beach isn’t the only beautiful beach Sydney is home to.

If you’ve got some spare time between your studies for heading to the beach, practicing your surfing and having an Aussie-style BBQ (and let’s face it, there’s always time for a visit to the beach) then here’s our guide to some of the best beaches Sydney has to offer, from the obvious to the lesser known.

Bondi Beach

Obviously, we have to start our list of the best beaches in Sydney with the most famous beach in the city, if not Australia. Bondi Beach is legendary, with tourists and Australians alike both flocking here daily to spend the day on the golden sands.

This is one of the most Instagram-able spots in Sydney for a reason; the Bondi Icebergs create a perfect backdrop for your beach selfies.

With a wide array of delicious eateries just offshore, including Harry’s Bondi which is famed for its smoked salmon and Vida Surf Store (try the smoothie bowls, they’re simply delicious), you could feasibly spend the whole day here.

When you visit, stop and take a look at the beautiful art alongside the beach - artists from all over the world take turns to create the incredible murals displayed here.

If you can surf, then you’re in luck, as Bondi has some awesome waves, so be sure to grab your board and check them out.

Coogee Beach

Coogee Beach is a few bays along from Bondi and is also hugely popular. It has golden sand and a gentler wave, which is perfect for those who are desperate for a swim in the Australian summer heat.

Between Bondi and Coogee, there’s a famous coastal walk that takes you along some beautiful beaches, including Bronte Beach and Clovelly Beach. Be sure to check out this walk at some point, as the views are amazing, and the beaches you pass are also worth a visit.

At Coogee, you’ll find the Coogee Pavilion, a lovely spot for dinner or a drink, and home to the infamous Sunday Sessions. Close by, there’s also Le Petit Cafe, an excellent spot for breakfast, and Sugarcane, a delicious modern Thai restaurant.

Watson’s Bay

Watson’s Bay is located in the South Head peninsula and is a cracking day trip for those wishing to explore beaches further away from the eastern suburb beaches. Take the South Head heritage trail and at the top of the walk you’ll get to visit the historic Hornby Lighthouse, which was built in 1858. Whale spotting is also available from South Head between May and November.

Watson’s Bay is Australia’s oldest fishing village, and diners can expect some incredible seafood here. Doyle’s on the Wharf is an excellent spot for takeaway fish and chips, but if you’d rather eat in, try Doyle’s on the Beach where you’ll find an amazing array of freshly-caught fish, plus prawns and lobster. The nearby Watson’s Boutique Hotel also has gorgeous views and a fabulous dining area and bar.

Manly Beach

Manly Beach is one of Australia’s most celebrated beaches and for good reasons. It’s an incredible surf spot, and locals hit the waves here pretty much every day, including in their lunch break. The beach is actually a National Surfing Reserve, and there are lessons available for non-surfers at Manly Surf School or Manly Surf Guide.

If you do get into the water, you’ll notice plenty of eye-catching fish, including the blue groper. For those wanting to dive, PADI courses are available. Try out The Dive Centre Manly, and get qualified in a gorgeous coral-rich area off one of the best beaches in Sydney.

Palm Beach

An hour and a half from the city center is the luxurious Palm Beach. With golden sands and beautiful blue seas, it’s an incredible beach with glorious views and fully deserving of its spot on our list of the best beaches in Sydney.

Located at Sydney’s northernmost seaside point of Barrenjoey Head, Palm Beach can be accessed via a coastal trail. At the most northerly point, the beach is excellent for surf, whereas the south end of the beach is protected and has an ocean pool which is great for swimming. The beach is 2.3km long, so perfect for those who want a seaside stroll.

Tamarama Beach

We end our look at the best beaches in Sydney with Tamarama Beach, which is located in between Bondi Beach and Coogee Beach and can be seen and accessed via the Bondi to Coogee walk. Its nickname among locals is ‘Glamarama’, because of the typically glamorous and beautiful people that hang out here.

The beach is great for surfing, and there are often heaps of surfers in the water. Take care, as the currents can be strong at Tamarama, and it’s known as one of the more dangerous surf spots, so probably not the best place to try surfing for the first time.

Best Study Spots in Sydney

Submitted by carwills4455@g… on Thu, 05/31/2018 - 10:57

There are some days when sitting at home or in your usual library cubicle, drinking the same campus coffee and soaking in the same view, can be too frustrating. There’s great power in a change of scenery when you’re studying, and fortunately there are no shortage of study spots in Sydney that are sure to give you a fresh perspective and kick-start that motivation. Listed are some of the best spots in Sydney to spend an afternoon finishing off that 5000-word paper.

From North Sydney to Bondi to the CBD, there are heaps of places you can study in Sydney and get a coffee and/or food, but here are some of our favorites. And yes, they all have free Wi-Fi.

State Library of New South Wales

When you eventually get tired of your university library, the State Library of New South Wales is a great place to head. It offers a ton of different study spaces, a café, and even an exhibition gallery you can check out during a study break.

The building is equipped with fast wi-fi, free computer use, printing and photocopying services, plus study rooms for group work. Sign up for a free library card to get access to all of the resources on offer.

City of Sydney Libraries

The City of Sydney has nine libraries around town to choose from, so you can choose a location that’s convenient for you. Free library cards and Wi-Fi access are available at each one.

The Roots Café

If you’re based in North Sydney, The Roots is a local favorite that serves up a delicious cup of joe, and a divine banana bread served with homemade espresso butter which makes it one of our favorite study spots in Sydney. With both indoor and outdoor seating and floor-to-ceiling windows, it’s so easy to lose track of time in this trendy café.

Bondi Organic Café

Take the bus over to Bondi and enjoy the ocean breeze, acai bowls, and coastal views while you kick back with a textbook at the Bondi Organic Café. While here, enjoy a nutritious super-charged smoothie and one of the many organic, vegetarian items on their menu.

The Hill Eatery

Unlike other places on our list of best study spots in Sydney, this one has a killer beachside view. The Hill Eatery provides a relaxed café experience with both breakfast and lunch options. If you can avoid daydreaming about the ocean, it’s an ideal spot for an afternoon of work.

MCA Café

Located at the Museum of Contemporary Art, the MCA Café boasts a legendary rooftop terrace showcasing the iconic views of the Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge with a lunch menu that won’t disappoint.

There is truly no better place to enjoy the sunshine, and you can also explore the museum’s art collection during a study break. All exhibits are free of charge.

Orto Trading Co

Conveniently located around the corner from Central Station, Orto Trading Co in Surry Hills is equipped with long wooden tables and an endless amount of natural light, especially on a sunny day. Sit back and get some work done with a latte, smoothie, or even an espresso martini (that’s mostly coffee, right?)

Three Williams

Located in the inner-city suburb of Redfern, Three Williams boasts a rustic warehouse feel thanks to its exposed brickwork and ample table space. Their menu is seasonally driven, so you know that whatever you order will contain the freshest of ingredients. Did I mention there’s an all-day breakfast menu?

The Royal Botanical Gardens

Sometimes all you need is some fresh air to clear your head in order to be in the right headspace to get some work done. Luckily, Sydney has over 400 parks and open spaces to choose from.

If you’re not dependent on Wi-Fi then the great outdoors offers an atmosphere perfect for getting out the textbooks. The Royal Botanical Garden is in a spectacular location next to the Sydney Opera House, providing a tranquil oasis for those wanting to unplug for the day.

Hyde Park

Close by, Hyde Park is the final place on our list of best study spots in Sydney and it’s likely be less packed with tourists than the Botanical Gardens. Who needs Wi-Fi when the sound of nature surrounds you? Grab a picnic blanket or take a seat on a park bench and dive into a textbook.

If you really need to plug in to get some emails sent, there are tons of free Wi-Fi zones and public hotspots around the city in public outdoor spaces such as Hyde Park.
