This year’s QS Asia University Rankings have been released, and Nanyang Technological University has been named the best university in Asia.

The Singapore-based university has climbed two places since last year, overtaking the National University of Singapore which now slips to second place. There’s also a changing of the guard in Hong Kong, with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology climbing one place to third, while the University of Hong Kong falls to fifth.

Elsewhere, Tsinghua University in sixth place is China’s leading institution. The only newcomer in this year’s top 10 is also Chinese; Fudan University has risen from 11^th to seventh.

Japan’s top university continues to be the University of Tokyo (ranked 13^th), while Malaysia has enjoyed a particularly strong year despite not being represented in the top 10, with three universities breaking into the top 50.

This year’s ranking features over 400 universities and was compiled by assessing universities across 10 different indicators including the proportion of academic staff qualified to PhD level and the proportion of inbound and outbound exchange students at the university. This year’s QS Latin America University Rankings have been released, and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile has been named the best university in Latin America.

The Chilean institution has climbed two places since last year’s ranking to take the number one spot, with last year’s number one university Universidade de São Paulo dropping two places to third. Brazil’s Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) remains in second place.

Brazil and Chile may dominate the top of the rankings but there’s good news elsewhere for Mexico and Argentina. Mexico now has two universities in the top five in the region for the first time, after Tecnológico de Monterrey rose two places to fifth. Argentina’s highest-ranked university, the Universidad de Buenos Aires, has also had a good year, climbing two places to ninth.

10 countries in total are featured in the top 50 this year, while the entire ranking comprises nearly 400 universities. Universities have been assessed on seven different indicators, including the proportion of academic staff qualified to PhD level and their online presence. The QS World University Rankings by Region for Latin America, Asia, Emerging Europe & Central Asia (EECA) and the Arab region have all been released.

While the QS World University Rankings, published in June this year, provide a fantastic overview of how universities are performing, the regional rankings allow us to focus in greater detail on some of the fastest-growing higher education sectors.

Each of these regional rankings is compiled using a unique methodology that reflects the demands of that part of the world, and providing a better picture of how universities compare with other institutions in the same part of the world.

Three of the four rankings feature a new university at number one with the Nanyang Technological University (Asia), Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (Latin America) and American University of Beirut (Arab region) all leading the way in their regions. Only Lomonosov Moscow State University remains number one since last year, topping the EECA ranking for a third consecutive year.
