Submitted by eleni@qs.com on Wed, 04/26/2017 - 16:05

If you aspire to a career that makes a difference to society, public sector work could be perfect for you. A Master’s in Public Policy is, therefore, a natural next step in your journey, so you’ll be thrilled to learn Pepperdine University in the US is offering a scholarship worth $20,000 for this course.

Two candidates who visit the QS World Grad School Tour will be awarded the scholarship, providing they fulfil the necessary criteria.

Interested? Read on for more of the benefits of studying public policy at Pepperdine.

1. You’ll get to study in a beautiful USA destination

Pepperdine University is located in Malibu, California, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You’ll be hard-pushed to find a more scenic location for your studies.

2. You can choose from four different public policy specializations

As part of the Master’s in Public Policy at Pepperdine University, you’ll study several different specialized areas, including:

Public Policy and American Politics

Learn about the dynamic nature of American society and consider the political, economic, and social implications of federal and local policies. This study area also includes the development of skills used when building consensus among a variety of constituents affected by new policy initiatives.

Public Policy and Economics

Examine such policies as urban and global issues, the evaluation of law and public policy, regional and metropolitan growth, and the role of government in a market economy.

Public Policy and International Relations

This traces a new role for U.S. leadership including studies in statesmanship, global alliances, and U.S. relations to areas including Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

State and Local Policy

This specialization teaches students how regions grow, develop, and can be effectively governed. Today, governors, mayors, and other municipal and business leaders are creating many of the most innovative and effective policy initiatives at local levels.

3. You’ll be perfectly trained for both the public and private sectors

Graduates of Public Policy aren’t only well-placed to pursue a career in public sector work, whether that’s in local or central government, the civil service, justice services, police authorities or social research organizations. You’ll also have the skills and knowledge to thrive in private sector career paths, such as HR, education administration and public affairs consultancy.

4. You could end up with a job that lets you travel around the world

With a postgraduate degree in Public Policy, previous graduates have ended up working for the United States Agency of International Development, the United Nations and a range of globe-spanning NGOs.

5. You’ll learn how to be a good problem solver

Public policy students deal with a variety of problems, based on various real-life case studies. You’ll learn how to conduct research and come up with sustainable solutions to these global issues.

6. You’ll gain technical communication and negotiation skills

Work on case studies will also see you have to pick a side and defend the arguments of that position. This practice helps you enhance and improve your communication and negotiation skills.

Six of the Most Stunning Student Dorms in America

Submitted by craig@qs.com on Tue, 04/25/2017 - 17:30

Going to university doesn’t mean having to spend years living in gross, moldy flats surrounded by dirty washing and piles of smelly underwear. If you’re hoping for an experience that’s a little bit classier, there are student digs out there with all sorts of luxury features, from sundecks and rooftop pools to yoga studios and volleyball courts.

Think you’d like to try living as an A-lister? Here are some of the most stunning luxury dorms in America.

Simmons Hall, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Nearby university: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.)
Key features: Ball pit, award-winning smoothies, looks like a massive sponge
Rent: Single rooms start at $5,325 per semester

Simmons Hall, nicknamed The Sponge because of its unusual exterior, is quite possibly the only university accommodation to openly boast on its website that it’s full of velociraptors. If you’re not terrified of dinosaurs, this could be an ideal place to live, particularly if you’re vegan (they serve vegan food in the cafeteria). Oh, and did we mention the giant ball pit?

The downside? Your friends from home will get fed up of hearing you talk about the sponge.

Pointe on Rio, Austin, Texas

Nearby university: University of Texas
Key features: Rooftop pool, sundeck
Rent: Private rooms start at $868 per month

Pointe on Rio is an ideal home for anyone who wants to be fully immersed in the Austin environment. The University of Texas is just a 15-minute walk away, and you’ll also have international food, historic buildings and the hipster hangouts on Guadalupe Street on your doorstep. Or, don’t go anywhere, and just relax by the rooftop pool or on your own private balcony.

The downside? Not everyone will appreciate you cannon-balling into the swimming pool.

Hub, Madison, Wisconsin

Nearby university: University of Wisconsin-Madison
Key features: Golf simulator, sauna, recording studio, yoga studio
Rent: Private rooms start at $875 per month

Can you really justify dropping over $900 a month on rent? Well, when it gets you everything you’ll have at Hub Madison, it can be. Perfect your swing in between lectures with some virtual golf sessions, or head out onto the ice rink in winter and see how long you can last before falling flat on your back. To be honest, you’ll probably forget to ever go to lectures, especially when you could be getting a sweat on in the steam room instead.

The downside? Seriously, you’ll need to be really disciplined to ever get any work done.

Ivy House, Gainesville, Florida

Nearby university: University of Florida
Key features: Female-only residence, jacuzzis, gourmet kitchen
Rent: Private rooms start at $725 per month

If you want to be as close to sorority row as possible, the University of Florida’s only female hall is the place to live. Ivy House offers a safe, female-friendly environment, with a gourmet kitchen and larger dorms than your traditional student hall. Be sure to make the most of Ivy House’s sundeck any time the sun is out.

The downside? No boys allowed, sorry.

evo at Cira Centre South, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Nearby universities: University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University
Key features: Rooftop infinity pool, complimentary 24-hour coffee bar
Rent: Private rooms start at $1,119 per month

Just five minutes’ walk from Drexel and Penn, Evo provides the perfect environment for helping you with your studies. Need a pick-me-up as you stay up all night writing an assignment? The 24-hour coffee bar will help. Need somewhere to work on a group project? Try the communal study rooms. Need to relax and have a bath? You’re in luck: utilities are included.

The downside? The pool’s nowhere near as fun when it’s raining.

Aspen Heights, Statesboro, Georgia

Nearby university: Georgia Southern University
Key features: Hot tub, volleyball court, sunbed
Rent: Private rooms start at $490 per month

If you’re hoping for a slightly more active student experience than just staying in bed watching Netflix for the next few years, the wide range of sport facilities at Aspen Heights should get your heart racing. Even if you don’t like exercise, the swimming pool and BBQ area should be enough to tempt you outside.

The downside? Georgia Southern University might be lovely, but it didn’t make the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017. Read into that what you will.

Think your university has better accommodation than this? Let us know in the comments below.

Submitted by sponsored.cont… on Tue, 04/25/2017 - 09:19

Sponsored by emlyon business school

1. Nina Ricci SARL

2. Bazarchic

3. Kanvic

4. Bpifrance

Penn Graduates are the Highest Earners in the Ivy League

Submitted by craig@qs.com on Mon, 04/24/2017 - 14:53

University of Pennsylvania graduates are the highest earners in the Ivy League, according to a recent study based on data from millions of anonymous tax records.

By the age of 34, the average Penn graduate is earning a whopping $91,800 a year, more than the average salary of graduates from Brown, Dartmouth, Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Cornell or Columbia.

Things are even better if you’re a man, with the average male graduate earning $110,200 a year. As the gender pay gap is still, depressingly, a thing, average earnings are much lower for female graduates: just $76,400.

The next biggest earners after Penn graduates are workers who attended Princeton or Harvard. Princeton graduates earn an average of $90,700 by the age of 34, while Harvard grads earn $81,500.

Bottom of the Ivy League pile is Brown, where average income for graduates is just $66,900.

So, if you’re interested in an Ivy League education and want to be earning big money at the end of it, Penn looks like being the place to be.

However, while it comes top of the Ivy League for graduate income, Penn is only eighth in the US when compared to all 2,137 institutions included in the report from the New York Times. Graduates from the Saint Louis College of Pharmacy are actually the best-paid in the country, earning an average salary of $123,600 by the time they turn 34.

Other institutions in the top five are: Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences ($115,800), MCPHS ($112,700), University of the Sciences ($102,700) and MIT ($98,500).

Submitted by staff.writer@qs.com on Fri, 04/21/2017 - 12:19

作者:Mathilde Frot & Craig O'Callaghan

via GIPHY

How to Vote in the 2017 UK General Election

Submitted by craig@qs.com on Wed, 04/19/2017 - 11:08

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has announced there will be a general election on June 8. Make sure you’re able to cast a vote and have your say on the future direction of the UK and Brexit by following these steps.

Go online and register to vote - it takes just five minutes. (Northern Ireland residents, you’ll need to register by clicking here instead.)

1. Check you’re eligible to vote

If you’ll be 18 or over by June 8, and you’re a British citizen, you will be eligible to vote. You may also be able to vote if you’re a Republic of Ireland citizen, or from one of the following Commonwealth countries:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Australia
  • The Bahamas
  • Bangladesh
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • Botswana
  • Brunel Darussalam
  • Cameroon
  • Canada
  • Cyprus
  • Dominica
  • Fiji Islands
  • Ghanas
  • Grenada
  • Guyana
  • India
  • Jamaica
  • Kenya
  • Kiribati
  • Lesotho
  • Malawi
  • Malaysia
  • Maldives
  • Malta
  • Mauritius
  • Mozambique
  • Namibia
  • Nauru
  • New Zealand
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Rwanda
  • St Kitts and Nevis
  • St Lucia
  • St Vincent & The Grenadines
  • Samoa
  • Seychelles
  • Sierra Leone
  • Singapore
  • Solomon Islands
  • South Africa
  • Sri Lanka
  • Swaziland
  • United Republic of Tanzania
  • Tonga
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Tuvalu
  • Uganda
  • Vanuatu
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe

Of course, these countries only apply if you’re also a permanent resident at an address in the UK. Only British citizens can vote from abroad, and even then they must have been registered to vote in the last 15 years.

2. Register to vote

Go online and register to vote - it takes just five minutes. (Northern Ireland residents, you’ll need to register by clicking here instead.)

You will need to know your National Insurance number in order to register (as well as your UK passport number if you’re registering to vote from abroad). If you don’t know your National Insurance number, you should be able to find it on any payslips you’ve received.

If you still can’t find it, either fill in this form or call the National Insurance helpline (0300 200 3500 if you’re in the UK, +44 191 203 7010 if you’re abroad).

You will also need to give the address you wish to register for. If you’re planning to vote in person (more on the other options later), this needs to be the address where you’ll be on June 8. If you’re currently at university, check your calendar now and see if you’ll be back home or still at university on that day. If you’re not sure, don’t worry: you can register for two addresses, although you can still only vote once.

3. On the day

Before election day, you’ll receive a poll card in the post, informing you of where and when to vote. If this doesn’t turn up, contact your local Electoral Registration Office. You don’t need your card to be able to vote, so don’t worry if you lose it - just as long as you know where you’re meant to be going!

On election day, voting will be open from 7am to 10pm. Staff at the polling station will ask for your name and address. You’ll then be given a ballot paper to fill in. Follow the instructions on the paper and place your slip in the ballot box.

If you’re going to be away from home on June 8, you can still vote. Apply to vote by post by May 22 and you’ll receive a postal ballot before election day. You must post this back as soon as possible. If it doesn’t arrive by June 8, your vote will not be counted. If you aren’t able to post it back in time, you can still bring it to the polling station on June 8.

The other way to vote in the general election is to vote by proxy. This is when you nominate somebody to vote on your behalf, such as a close family member. You can only apply for this in certain circumstances (for example, if you’re away on June 8 or have a disability), and the person you choose must also be registered to vote.
