How do the Latest QS and US News Rankings Compare?

Submitted by laura@qs.com on Tue, 09/13/2016 - 15:52

Ivy League Colleges dominate the top of the 2017 Best Colleges ranking, published today by US News and World Report. Princeton University retains the overall top spot, followed by Harvard University in second place, and three more of the eight Ivy League colleges feature in the top 10.

Indeed, there are few surprises in this list of top US universities, which presents a very similar picture to that given in the latest QS World University Rankings, published last week. As the table below shows, the 10 top US universities are almost the same in both rankings – and the few differences are relatively small. Columbia University and Duke University, which both appear in the top 10 of the US News ranking, are only just outside the QS top 10 – and the reverse holds true for Caltech and Cornell.

US News and World Report – Best National Universities 2017

QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017 – Top US Universities

1. Princeton University

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

2. Harvard University

2. Stanford University

3. University of Chicago

3. Harvard University

4. Yale University

4. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

5. Columbia University

5. University of Chicago

6. Stanford University

6. Princeton University

7. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

7. Yale University

8. Duke University

8. Cornell University

9. University of Pennsylvania

9. Johns Hopkins University

10. Johns Hopkins University

10. University of Pennsylvania

How are the top US universities assessed?

While the two rankings produce similar overall lists of the top US universities, the methodologies used to do so are very different. The US News ranking uses 15 data sources, grouped into the following categories:

  • Graduation and retention rates (worth 22.5% of the overall score)
  • Undergraduate academic reputation (22.5%)
  • Faculty resources (20%)
  • Student selectivity (12.5%)
  • Financial resources (10%)
  • Graduation rate performance (7.5%)
  • Alumni giving (5%)

While the QS ranking does not assess any financial or selectivity-related factors, it does assess universities’ levels of internationalization, alongside indicators related to research, teaching and employment:

  • Academic reputation (40%)
  • Employer reputation (10%)
  • Student-to-faculty ratio (20%)
  • Citations per faculty member (20%)
  • International faculty ratio (5%)
  • International student ratio (5%)

The relatively close alignment between the two rankings’ final lists shows the extent to which the top US universities tend to come out ahead regardless of the indicator chosen. In general, they are the best-funded, most selective, highest-reputed, best-staffed, and most international – with all of these factors in turn fuelling the others.

What does this mean for students?

For prospective students trying to choose between the top US universities, the relatively high levels of alignment between rankings is likely to instill greater confidence, while the different methodologies make for a rich pool of complementary data sets. Each ranking allows students to access information and scores for each of the indicators assessed, alongside additional information such as average tuition fees, providing extensive resources for online research and comparison.

All of the rankings providers are working to improve the presentation of results, allowing students to access more of the information they need in one place, as well as making more specialized comparisons. The US News ranking, for instance, publishes a selection of additional lists, including a ranking of National Liberal Arts Colleges. Meanwhile, the overall QS World University Rankings is accompanied by the QS World University Rankings by Subject – currently covering 42 subjects, with more added each year.

As international rankings continue to extend their scope, and with new specialized rankings dedicated to the top US universities being developed, students will soon have even more data to draw on when making their choice.

Submitted by laura.tucker@qs.com on Thu, 09/08/2016 - 15:40

Top 6 Reasons to Study Abroad in Galway

Submitted by sponsored.cont… on Mon, 09/05/2016 - 15:08

Sponsored by NUI Galway

From its position on the Atlantic edge of Europe, Galway combines the energy of a young and diverse population with the authenticity of a place steeped in history and tradition. Reputed as a safe, young and student-friendly city, Galway is Ireland’s fastest-growing city, especially in the high-tech sector…  Be charmed by its medieval streets or its jaw-dropping countryside. Whether you love the buzz of the city or prefer the great outdoors, Galway has something for everyone. Discover six reasons to move to Galway for your studies now.

1. Galway is the ‘friendliest’ and ‘most charming’ city.

The New York Times dubs Galway “Ireland’s most charming city”, as it is “compact, walkable and filled to the brim with independent shops and restaurants”. The US Travel + Leisure Magazine has voted Galway the “world’s most friendly destination”  and The Condé Nast Traveler magazine has announced that Galway has been voted in the top six friendliest cities  in the world! These reviews probably won’t come as a surprise to many, given the thousands attracted to the city’s many festivals throughout the year, including the summer’s Galway International Arts Festival, the Galway Film Fleadh, the Galway Races, the Galway World Oyster Festival and many more!

2. Galway is changing the world!

Come to Galway and be inspired by what you can discover! From the depths of the ocean floor to outer space, the research taking place in Galway is changing the world. According to multinational media body Thomson Reuters, NUI Galway boasts more of the world’s most influential scientific minds than anywhere else in Ireland – with four of its professors earning the distinction.

NUI Galway’s reputation for impactful research is growing internationally, and the university has the highest success rate in Ireland for European Union research funding, through the Horizon 2020 program.

3. Galway has been designated the European Capital of Culture for 2020.

Galway has long been renowned as a cultural hub, with world-class festivals and world-renowned artists calling the city home.

In recognition of its love of culture, Galway has been designated European Capital of Culture for 2020. Galway looks forward to welcoming the world to its city and exploring its shared creativity and culture. Don’t miss the biggest celebration of culture that Ireland has ever seen!

4. Galway is the most international city in Ireland.

From its location on the edge of Europe, Galway has always excelled at reaching out to the world. Today it’s Ireland’s most international city, with one-in-five Galwegians born outside Ireland. This adds energy and interest to the city streets throughout the year.

Galway’s biggest university attracts more international students than anywhere else – with over 3,000 students coming to study each year from overseas. NUI Galway has student exchange programs with over 200 international universities around the world, and a global community of staff – 35% are from overseas, coming from 45 countries worldwide.

5. Galway is a leader in med-tech and a global research hub.

Don’t let Galway’s medieval streets fool you – it is a global hub for the medical technology industry. Eight of the world’s top ten med-tech companies are based here, and the medical devices designed and made in Galway are saving lives all over the world.

NUI Galway’s new €30 million Biomedical Science Building is home to 300 scientists and researchers, working in areas such as regenerative medicine, stem cell research, cancer biology, and biomaterials.

6. Galway is the best micro-city in Europe.

Galway may not be Ireland’s biggest city, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to global business. The Financial Times has named Galway as Europe’s Micro City of the Year, and praised Galway’s business-friendliness.

While the city is big enough to have all of the services you need, Galway is small enough to feel intimate. It won’t take long before you’ve picked your favorite spots, and the city starts feeling like home.
