North-Western State Medical University named after Mechnikov

The North-western state medical university named after I.I. Mechnikov(NWSMU) is one of the largest medical universities in Russia. Today around 5 thousand people study in the University, while postgradute programs are being taken by 32 thousands. 

NWSMU offers a whole range of studied:

Before:

• the University cooperates with a state public school (Medical lyceum 179) taking an active part in finding and preparing the best schoolchildren to enter NWSMU;
• the University provides preparatory courses (6 and 8 months) for the school leavers: biology, chemistry, anatomy, and etc. - the courses are aimed to help the course takers to get ready both for the Unified State Exam and for the entering University exam;
• Small Medical Faculty: two year long courses for the schoolkids aimed to make young people familier with the University (contains regular visits to the departments, labs and other spaces of NWSMU) and to help them to take a responsible decision what sphere of medicine to choose;
• for the foreign students the University offers preparatory courses on Russian language, biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics; the corse length is 9 months.

In process:

• NWSMU provides education on 96 departments (7 faculties: dentistry, general medicine, preventive medicine, surgery, pediatrics, physical therapy and bio-medical faculty). For the students the University offers three educational programs on specialist degree (general medicine, dentistry, preventive medicine), one program on bachelor degree (nursery) and one programs on master degree (public health).
• The University has a wide range of contact with higher educational institutes all over the world. Today NWSMU has more than 40 agreements with the foreign universities that allows its students and to study in different countries in frames of the student mobility as well as the foreign students to come and have their education done in St. Petersburg. Every year the University widens its networking area, makes new contacts and signs new partnership agreements. The management of the University pays a lot of attention to strengthening and developing the international cross-cultural communications, both promoting  the University's educational services abroad and  providing students' and professional staff with opportunities to study new methodics and practices abroad.
• NWSMU offers to the foreigners a range of possibilities to choose the best way to study in the University. Starting from the Summer schools (on Russian language, Medicine, Biometrical statistics, Epidemiology, Public health, Methods in Epidemiology, Occupational Hygiene) combining educational process with cultural and communicational elements and continuing with a tailor-made, short, 1-2 week courses elaborated individually according to the demand of the partner. The partner-university can choose a subject, duration of the program and number of people in group.
