The Technical University of Sofia, established in 1945, is the largest and nationally recognized as a leading technical university in the Republic of Bulgaria. It provides professional engineering education based on constantly expanding research activities, in line with the latest technological advancements, for the benefit of industry and society. The Technical University of Sofia has 17 Faculties ( based in Sofia, Plovdiv and Sliven ), two colleges ( based in Sofia, Botevgrad , Kozloduy , Kazanlak and Sliven ),   and two vocational schools ( in Sofia and Pravets ). Alongside its traditional training in the Bachelor  s, Master’s and Doctoral degree programmes taught in Bulgarian, the University offers degree programmes in English, German and French. The degrees obtained at these Faculties are accredited by EU partner universities.

The Technical University of Sofia is home to a diverse international community and welcomes talented students from around the world. There are currently over 11 000 students studying at the University with 1000 international students from over 45 different countries. More than 160 000 engineers have graduated from the Technical University of Sofia over its 75 years of history. A number of leading Bulgarian and foreign enterprises rely on the university graduates to fill in key for their engineering operations positions.

The Technical University of Sofia is deeply engaged in innovative and diverse research activities. Fundamental and applied research is conducted in close association with industry, which creates opportunities for employment of university graduates, and fosters their professional development as engineers or researchers.

The research and development and academic activities at the Technical University of Sofia are closely related and the University performs its socio-economic role by contributing to obtaining scientific results in priority areas for the country and in fields of interest for industry for the benefit of people and society. The scope of research and development done at the University is diverse and contributes to the national and international technology transfer in areas such as, but not limited to Computer sciences, Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence; Virtual Engineering; Mechatronics and Clean Technologies; Energy and Renewable Energy; Electronics; Automation and Robotics; Bioengineering; Industrial Chemistry and many others.

The University has been awarded the highest national institutional accreditation grade for two consecutive periods – 9.5 (on a scale of 10) for the period 2012 – 2018, and 9.56 for the period 2018 – 2024 by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency.

The University not only has the highest accreditation rating but occupies a leading position in the professional fields it provides. According to the Bulgarian Ranking System, the Technical University of Sofia is ranked first in six professional fields. They are (presented according to the national classification): Mechanical Engineering; Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation; Telecommunications and Computer Systems and Technologies; Power Engineering; Transport, Shipping and Aviation and General Engineering.

At present, the Technical University of Sofia is one of the eight partner universities in the European University of Technology EUt+ alliance . This is one of the 41 alliances, called European Universities, engaged in promoting and linking education, research, and innovation, funded by HORIZON 2020 and Erasmus+ programmes. 

The   Technical University of Sofia cooperates with over 50 universities in Europe, Asia, North and Central America. It has a well-established tradition of cooperation with industrial enterprises and businesses thus providing employment opportunities for its graduates, as well as opportunities for career development of its engineers and researchers. The university has worked on a wide number of international projects such as HORIZON 2020, Erasmus+ and with international organisations such as NATO, UNESCO and others.

 

The Mission of the Technical University of Sofia is to meet the needs of society for highly qualified specialists in the engineering profession and the results of the University’s fundamental and applied research activities to respond to the needs of industry.
