Université d'Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand 1 was created as the result of merging two pre-existing French universities: Blaise Pascal University and the University of Auvergne. This merger occurred on 1 January 2017. The new institution consists of 22 components (i.e. schools, institutes, training and research units).


The University of Auvergne traces its origins back to 1519 and has been one of France’s leading medical schools for over 100 years. It offers over 60 degree programs in subjects such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, law and forensics, and technology. Research is a key focus of the university, with nearly two-thirds of its research output occurring within the field of life sciences and health. 15,000 students are enrolled at this institution. 


Blaise Pascal University is named after the French philosopher, mathematician and scientist Blaise Pascal who was alive in the 17th century. The university was originally founded in 1854 but changed its name in 1987. Over 16,000 students are now enrolled here, including approximately 2,500 foreign students. An extensive range of degrees are available to study here, numbering roughly 250 in total.
