The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 have been released, revealing the best universities for 48 different academic subjects.

The largest ranking of its kind, there are few other resources which can match this year’s subject rankings for the level of insight and assistance it can offer you when choosing a university.

Predictably, the United States and the United Kingdom are the two most dominant study destinations in this year’s ranking, with 28 and 13 number one ranks respectively. A full breakdown of the top-ranked universities by subject can be found below (two universities share first place for performing arts).

The recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 includes a ranking of the 400 top universities for mathematics, with each institution ranked based on a methodology which includes academic and employer reputations as well as other factors.

Top universities for mathematics in the US and Canada

An impressive 77 of the world’s top universities for mathematics are found in the US, 20 of which boast positions in the global top 50. Outside the seven in the top 10, other prestigious US universities for mathematics include Columbia University (ranked 12th), California Institute of Technology (Caltech) (14th), the University of Michigan (up five places to rank 16th) and the University of Chicago (17th).

Meanwhile, Canada is home to 18 more top math schools, led by the University of Toronto, which climbed four places to rank 15th. Also in the top 50 are the University of British Columbia and the University of Waterloo.

Top universities for mathematics in Europe

Heading across the Atlantic, you’ll find a further 173 top universities for mathematics within Europe, including 33 in the UK. Outside the top 10 table above, three UK universities feature among the world’s top 50 for this subject: Imperial College London, which narrowly misses out on spot in the top 10 at 11th place, the University of Warwick (which climbed 13 places to rank joint 20th) and the University of Edinburgh (ranked joint 47th for mathematics in 2019).

26 more top universities for mathematics can be found in Germany, including two new entries and two in the global top 50: Technical University of Munich (up five places to rank joint 45th) and Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (50th).

France also performs well, hosting 20 top math schools, including three in the top 50 – new entrant Université PSL (Paris Sciences & Lettres) takes the lead at joint 20th, and is followed by Ecole Polytechnique (29th) and another new entrant, Sorbonne University (joint 32nd).

Italy is next with 17 entrants – although none of these make the top 50, Politecnico di MilanoSapienza – Università di Roma and the  University of Pisa all rank 51-100.

A further 15 top universities for mathematics are found in the Nordic locations, with six in Sweden, four in Denmark, three in Norway and two in Finland. Of these, the highest ranked institution is KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, up from 51-100 to 44th this year.

Spain is home to 13 more of the world’s top math schools, including three in the 101-150 range, while the Netherlands and Russia each offer eight top math schools, of which Russia’s Lomonosov Moscow State University is the highest-ranked at joint 34th.

Six more top universities for mathematics are found in Switzerland – as well as ETH Zurich in the top 10, another high-placed Swiss entrant is EPFL - Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, up five places to rank 19th this year.

Elsewhere, Austria, Belgium and Poland have five top math schools each, with Belgium’s KU Leuven the highest ranked at 51-100, while Austria’s entrants include the University of Vienna at 101-150.

And finally, Poland, Portugal and Ireland have three representatives in the math ranking each, while the Czech Republic has two and Greece, Slovenia, Serbia and Hungary are all home to one entrant each. Of the aforementioned locations, Portugal’s University of Lisbon is the highest ranked institution for mathematics.

Top universities for mathematics in Asia

85 more of the world’s top universities for mathematics can be found in Asia, 28 of which can be found in China. China has seven entrants in the top 100, including Peking University (joint 20th), Tsinghua University (25th) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (up from 51-100 to 42nd).

Japan meanwhile claims 12 entries in the math ranking, including two in the top 50: the University of Tokyo (ranked joint 20th with Peking University) and Kyoto University (joint 36th).

South Korea is home to 11 more of the world’s best institutions for mathematics, with Seoul National University up from 51-100 to now rank within global top 50 for this subject, at joint 47th.

India’s 10 entrants include the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD), which both climbed from 151-200 to now rank in the 101-150 range.

Of Hong Kong’s six top math schools, all but one are in the global top 100, with the
Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) overtaking the University of Hong Kong as the location’s number one for this subject, ranked 28th this year.

Also with six schools is Taiwan, led by National Taiwan University (NTU) at 51-100, while
Universiti Malaya (UM) continues to be the highest ranked of Malaysia’s five top universities for mathematics.

Pakistan is new to the math ranking this year with three entrants, while Singapore’s two continue to rank within the top 100 - National University of Singapore (NUS) holds steady at 13th, while Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) fell slightly to now rank within the 51-100 range. And finally, Indonesia and Thailand each offer one more top math school, with Thailand new this year.

Top universities for mathematics in Australia & New Zealand

Australia boasts a total of 17 top math schools in this year’s ranking, including six in the top 100 and one new entry. In the top 50 are the Australian National University (ANU) (31st), the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) (up six places to rank 38th) and the University of Melbourne (41st).

Meanwhile, neighboring New Zealand is home to five more of the world’s best institutions for mathematics, led by the University of Auckland, which is down slightly to rank 51-100 this year.

Top universities for mathematics in Latin America

Heading to Latin America, you’ll find 15 more of the world’s best institutions to study mathematics, including seven in Brazil. Of Brazil’s entrants, its highest ranked continues to be Universidade de São Paulo (USP) at 51-100.

Chile is home to three top math schools, with Universidad de Chile climbing from 101-150 to 51-100. Colombia and Mexico have two entrants each, while Argentina has one, with Mexico’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) coming 101-150.

Top universities for mathematics in Africa & the Middle East

Over in the Middle East, Israel claims five representatives in the math ranking, led by
Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in the 51-100 range. And of Saudi Arabia’s four entries, King Abdulaziz University (KAU) is the highest ranked, climbing from 151-200 to place 101-150.

Finally, Iran and Turkey are both new to the math ranking, Iran with two entrants and Turkey with one, while Africa is represented by Egypt’s sole entrant, Cairo University (351-400).

The newly released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 includes a ranking of the world’s top universities for theology, based on a methodology which assesses four academic indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, and H-index (which measures the productivity and impact of the publication of a scientist or scholar).

Top universities for theology in the US & Canada

The US dominates the theology ranking in the North American region, with 33 representatives in total and five institutions in the global top 10.

Six more US universities make the top 20, with the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) moving up three places to rank 12th. The global top 50 sees the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) also improve its position in the ranking by moving up five spots to rank at joint 24th, as well as the University of Virginia and Baylor University, which both shot up from the 51-100 range to place joint 40th and joint 45th, respectively.

Meanwhile in Canada, five top universities for theology are included in the ranking, with the best performer, the University of Toronto, placing 16th. Further down in the global top 50, the University of British Columbia climbs eight places this year to now rank at joint 31st.

Top universities for theology in Europe

In total, 47 European universities are included in the theology ranking this year, with the global top 10 comprising of top universities for theology in the UK, Germany and Belgium.

The majority of Europe’s top universities for a theology degree are based in the UK, which claims 14 institutions in total. Aside from the three in the top 10, other top UK universities for this subject include the University of Edinburgh (17th) and the University of St Andrews (up six places to rank 18th), while the University of Aberdeen stands out the most of the other UK entrants, having moved up from 42nd place to 34th.  

Germany has a total of nine representatives in the theology ranking this year, including six in the top 50, with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin boasting the most impressive performance, climbing seven places this year to rank 36th. Georg-August-Universität Göttingen also climbed up the theology ranking to place joint 40th after placing in the 51-100 region last year.

The Netherlands has six entrants in this year’s theology ranking, led by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 15th place. Additionally, the nation’s only-ranked institution in the global top 50, Leiden University, improved its position by six places to now rank 33rd in the world for its theology courses.

Italy has four representatives in the theology university ranking this year – two of which are new entrants, including Università di Bologna (UNIBO), which currently ranks at joint 180th in the QS World University Rankings® 2019. It’s followed by Switzerland with three representatives; the University of Zurich ranking the highest, after moving up six spots to place 42nd.

Belgium, Denmark and Sweden follow with two entrants each – Université Catholique de Louvain is up four places and now ranks within the top 10; while the nation’s only other ranked university, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, makes the global top 20, in 14th place. Of Denmark’s two entrants, the highest-ranked is Aarhus University, which sits in 30th place.

Finally in Europe, with just one entrant each, are Norway, Ireland, new entrant Spain, Austria and Finland; Norway’s only representative, the University of Oslo, sits in joint 45th place, while the rest all follow at 51-100.

Top universities for theology in Asia

Of Asia’s nine representatives in the theology university ranking this year, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) ranks the highest for the subject and is the best performer overall, having jumped a whopping 24 places from last year to now rank 23rd, as well as boasting the highest academic reputation score (and the highest score overall) among Asian universities for theology. Hong Kong’s remaining two ranked institutions are new entrants, with the University of Hong Kong (HKU) coming 25th in the QS World University Rankings, while Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) places joint 277th, internationally.  

Of China’s two representatives, new entrant Fudan University ranks the highest at joint 31st, followed by Renmin (People’s) University of China in 44th place, after ranking at 51-100 last year. Malaysia’s two representatives both now rank in the 51-100 range after seeing the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) drop from 31st place this year, while Japan and South Korea follow with just one representative, both of which are ranked 51-100.

Top universities for theology in Australia & New Zealand

Over in Australasia, the theology university ranking includes four top universities in Australia, and three in New Zealand. Of the seven ranked institutions overall, the best performer is Australia’s Monash University, which currently ranks in 43rd place after dropping nine places from last year. The University of Sydney previously ranked second-best in the region for theology at 37th place, and Deakin University followed in 45th place; both universities have now dropped in the ranking to sit in the 51-100 range.  

Of New Zealand’s three representatives (all of which place 51-100), two are new entrants, including the University of Auckland, which currently ranks 85th in the QS World University Rankings.

Top universities for theology in Africa & the Middle East

South Africa is the only African nation to have representatives in the theology university ranking this year, with both of its ranked institutions maintaining their positions at 51-100.

Over in the Middle East, Israel claims the region’s only ranked institution for theology – the Hebrew University of Jerusalem – which claims an impressive 22nd place.

Top universities for theology in Latin America

Finally in Latin America, Chile and Colombia are the region’s only representatives in the theology university ranking, each claiming one entrant each, with Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile ranking the highest, in 37th place, and receiving the most impressive score of the two for employer reputation; while Colombia’s Pontificia Universidad Javeriana is a new entrant this year at 51-100.

Top universities for art and design in the US & Canada 

The US is one of the most dominant locations in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, and the art school ranking is no exception. It’s home to 41 of the world’s top art schools, including five of the top 10. Outside the top 10 above, other strong universities for this subject include Art Center College of Design (ranked 13th), Stanford University (joint 14th) and Carnegie Mellon University (17th).

Heading north, seven more top universities for art and design can be found in Canada, including the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto, both of which are ranked in the 51-100 range.

Top universities for art and design in Europe

There are 80 top European art schools featured in the ranking, including 17 in the global top 50.  The UK has 28 entrants in the art school ranking – outside its three in the top 10, other impressively ranked institutions include Goldsmiths, University of London (ranked 11th), Loughborough University (28th) and UCL (University College London) (36th).

Looking elsewhere in Europe, 17 top universities for art and design can be found in the Nordic study destinations, with Denmark, Finland and Sweden all boasting a top-50 ranked art school – outside of Finland’s Aalto University in the top 10, Denmark’s Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (KADK) is placed 20th, while Sweden’s Umeå University climbed from 51-100 to 26th place in this year’s art school ranking.

The other European schools featured within the global top 50 for art and design are the Netherlands’ Design Academy Eindhoven (up five places to rank 19th), France’s École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle (ENSCI Les Ateliers) (up from joint 49th to joint 24th), Switzerland’s Haute Ecole d'art et de design de Genève (HEAD) (up from 101-150 to 48th) and Germany’s Universität der Künste Berlin (ranked joint 49th). And outside of Politecnico di Milano in the top 10, Italy is home to four more high-ranking universities for art, including Politecnico di Torino (ranked in the 51-100 range).

Seven top art schools can be found in Spain, led by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in the 51-100 range, while four are located in Austria, including the University of Applied Arts Vienna (101-150).

Belgium, Ireland and Portugal have two entries each, with the Portuguese University of Lisbon ranked in the 51-100 range for art. Finally, Russia and the Czech Republic have one entrant in each, with the latter’s Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design Prague climbing from 151-200 to 51-100 in this year’s art school ranking.

Top universities for art and design in Australia & New Zealand

Heading down under, there are 15 top universities for art and design in Australia, including eight in the global top 50. RMIT University continues to be the strongest Australian university for art and design at 12th place, and is followed by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) (up five places to rank 23rd), the University of Melbourne (34th), and the University of Sydney (up nine places to rank 40th).

Meanwhile, New Zealand is home to three more of the world’s top art schools, all of which are ranked in the 51-100 range: Auckland University of TechnologyMassey University and the University of Auckland.

Top universities for art and design in Asia

There are 39 top art and design schools in Asia, seven of which are ranked within the top 50. China has one of the largest presences of any Asian location in the ranking, with 11 representatives, including Tongji University, the highest ranked in both China and Asia as a whole at joint 14th (up four places from last year). The two other top-50 art schools in China are Tsinghua University (18th) and China Central Academy of Fine Arts (27th, up from 51-100).

South Korea is home to nine entrants in the art school ranking, led by Seoul National University in joint 38th place, while Sungkyunkwan University is in the 51-100 range. Meanwhile Taiwan has six representatives, half of which are in the 51-100 range, including National Cheng Kung University (NCKU).

Japan has four top art schools, while Hong Kong and India each have three. Of these destinations, the highest-ranked institution is Hong Kong’s Hong Kong Polytechnic University at 16th, up eight places this year.

Singapore’s two top universities for art are both placed in the top 50 - National University of Singapore (NUS) (up 10 places to rank 30th) and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) (up eight places to rank joint 31st). Lastly, Indonesia has one entrant, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), ranked 151-200.

Top universities for art and design in Latin America & elsewhere

15 more of the world’s top art schools are located in Latin America, including four in Mexico. Mexico’s top entrant is once again Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), which shares 45th place with Argentina’s Universidad de Palermo. However, it’s the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) which has the distinction of coming number one in Latin America for art and design, with a rank of 35th.

Meanwhile, Brazil, Chile and Colombia each have three universities in the art school ranking, including one each in the 51-100 range: Brazil’s Universidade de São Paulo, Chile’s Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Colombia’s Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

Elsewhere in the world, South Africa is home to one top art school: the University of Cape Town, ranked 151-200 in 2019.

Top universities for psychology in the US and Canada

With 92 psychology universities ranked this year (including 24 in the top 50), the US dominates the ranking, with seven institutions in the global top 10 and a further 17 in the top 50.

New York University (NYU) just misses a place in the top 10 at 11th, while Princeton University comes 12th, having gone up four places from last year. Other US schools within the top 50 in the psychology ranking include Columbia University in 13th place, the University of Pennsylvania (14th), University of Chicago (up three spots to rank 15th), and Northwestern University (20th).

Canada is home to 18 more of the world’s best universities for psychology, led by the University of British Colombia in joint 16th place, and followed by the University of Toronto (=18th) and McGill University (=24th). A further three Canadian universities feature in the top 100.

Top Universities for psychology in Europe

Europe boasts the highest number of top psychology schools, claiming a total of 39 in the global top 100 – 13 of which are in the top 50 with the UK being the only study destination to make the top 10.   

With the UK dominating the psychology ranking in Europe – boasting a total of 43 entrants –  a further six of its top psychology schools make the top 50 – King’s College London (KCL) in 22nd place, the University of Edinburgh (=28th), London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), up three places to rank 32nd, the University of Exeter (34th), the University of Warwick (from 51-100 to =44th) and the University of Manchester (=46th).

Following the UK with the second-highest number of representatives in the psychology ranking is Germany, with 23 entrants, including three in the global top 100: Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.  

Nearby in the Netherlands, 10 institutions are ranked for psychology in the ranking this year, with the University of Amsterdam its highest-ranked in joint 16th place. Also featured in the top 50 for psychology this year are Radboud University Nijmegen and Utrecht University in joint 46th and joint 48th places respectively, while all but one of its other entries make the top 100.

Of Italy’s seven representatives, Università degli Studi di Padova ranks the highest, sitting in the 51-100 range.

Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain all have six entrants each, with Belgium’s Katholieke Universiteit Leuven still ranking the highest, in 24th place. Alongside Switzerland’s University of Geneva and University of Zurich, a further two of Belgium’s best universities for psychology rank in the global top 100 (Université Catholique de Louvain and the University of Ghent) while Sweden’s only entrant in the top 100 is the Karolinska Institute.

With under five entrants, France and Ireland are home to four institutions each in the psychology ranking, both claiming a university in the global top 100: Université PSL (Paris Sciences & Lettres) in France, and Trinity College Dublin in Ireland.

Heading over to Scandinavia, Denmark and Norway each claim three of the best psychology universities each; three make up the top 101-150, of which two are based in Denmark (Aarhus University and the University of Copenhagen), and one is found in Norway, the University of Oslo. Also following with three representatives are Finland and Portugal.

And finally, Russia has two entrants in the psychology ranking this year, while Austria and Romania each have only one – Austria’s Universität Wien ranking the highest, at 151-200.

Top universities for psychology in Australia and New Zealand

Australia claims 20 representatives in the psychology ranking, with the University of Melbourne the highest ranked at joint 18th. A further six Australian institutions make the top 50 – the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 21st place; the University of Queensland (UQ), which went up four places to rank 23rd; the University of Sydney (26th); the Australian National University (ANU), up six spots to place 38th; the University of Western Australia (UWA), from 51-100 to 42nd place, and Monash University (=48th).

Meanwhile, in nearby New Zealand, five more institutions are ranked among the world’s best for psychology, led by the University of Auckland at joint 50th, while Victoria University of Wellington is in the 51-100 range.

Top universities for psychology in Asia

Asia is now home to 23 of the world’s best universities for psychology, with China dominating the ranking this year with the most representatives in the region (eight), its highest ranked being Peking University in the top 100, followed by Beijing Normal University in the top 150.

South Korea has five entrants this year, with the highest ranked – Seoul National University (SNU) – having climbed from 101-150 to 51-100.   

Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan all claim three top psychology schools each, with the highest-ranked, the University of Hong Kong (HKU), shooting up nine places this year to rank 27th. Singapore follows with two out three of its representatives both making the top 40 after ranking in the 51-100 range last year: the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 33rd place, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) at joint 40th. Of Hong Kong’s two remaining representatives, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) ranks in the global top 100, as does Japan’s University of Tokyo.     

Taiwan’s only representative, the National Taiwan University (NTU), also features in the global top 150 for psychology degrees.

Top universities for psychology in Latin America

Overall in the Latin American region, there are six top psychology schools ranked this year: with Chile and Brazil claiming two institutions each, while Argentina and Mexico have one each.

The following Latin American institutions feature in the global top 150: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and Universidade de São Paulo (USP) in Brazil.

Top universities for psychology in Africa & the Middle East

And finally, the highest-ranked institution for psychology courses in the Middle East this year is the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, at 101-150, one of Israel’s four entries. Meanwhile, Africa’s only entrant in the psychology ranking is the University of Cape Town, South Africa, ranked 151-200.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019, released today, covers five different branches of engineering - chemical, civil and structural, electrical, mechanical and mineral and mining, based on a methodology which assesses employer and academic reputations, research impact and more.

As you can see, MIT is the world leader once again in this year’s Engineering and Technology subject area table. The university has been associated with 89 Nobel Prize winners and also boasts a number of other successful alumni, such as Buzz Aldrin. Elsewhere, there are three UK universities in the top 10, led by the University of Cambridge in fourth place, while Singapore’s two premier institutions also feature. The chemical engineering ranking currently features 300 universities, with the US claiming an impressive 70 spots, including 18 in the top 50. China is the next most-represented location with 26 entrants, including Tsinghua University, which just misses out on a top-10 spot at 11th place.

The UK also fares well, with 19 top chemical engineering schools included, including five in the top 50, while half of South Korea’s 14 entrants are in the global top 100 for this subject, led by KAIST - Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology in 22nd place.

MIT also continues to take the lead in the civil engineering ranking, and the US has 36 more representatives featured out of a possible 200. This year’s table sees UCB climb four spots to now rank third for civil engineering. 10 more top civil engineering schools can be found in neighboring Canada, with the University of British Colombia climbing seven places to rank joint 30th.

Elsewhere, Australia has 14 entrants in this ranking, including six in the top 50, with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) its highest ranked at 12th. And both of Singapore’s two representatives are in the global top 10 for this subject, with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) climbing 11 places to rank 10th.

The electrical engineering ranking, extended to feature 500 universities this year, now includes 84 US institutions, including 16 in the top 50. The ranking also sees ETH Zurich climb eight places to rank third in the world for this subject, with fellow Swiss entry EPFL - Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne joining it in the top 10 at joint ninth place (up from 16th) alongside the National University of Singapore (NUS).

However, NUS is not the number one Asian institution for electrical engineering, with fellow Nanyang Technological University (NTU) taking this position, having climbed six places to rank sixth.

Elsewhere, other impressive jumps in this year’s electrical engineering ranking include Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology (up nine places to rank 19th), Germany’s Technical University of Munich (up 17 places to rank joint 20th), and Italy’s Politecnico di Milano (up 12 places to rank 23rd).

Also extended to now feature 500 of the world’s top engineering schools, the mechanical engineering ranking is again dominated by the US, which has 90 entrants, including 13 in the top 50. Looking at the top 15, the Netherlands’ Delft University of Technology climbed nine places to rank fourth this year, while Italy’s Politecnico di Milano went up 10 places to rank seventh and Switzerland’s ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology went up seven places to rank 13th.

Elsewhere in the world, of the 23 Latin American institutions in the ranking, Brazil’s Universidade de São Paulo is the highest ranked, climbing from 101-150 to 51-100 this year. In Asia, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) comes top at 11th (up three places from last year), while Australia has four institutions in the top 100 for mechanical engineering, including Monash University

The mineral and mining engineering table, included for the first time in 2016, is the smallest of the five engineering rankings (with only 50 universities featured) and continues to be led by the US’ Colorado School of Mines.

Australian universities perform very well in this ranking, with four spots in the top 10, with the University of Western Australia and the University of Queensland both improving their positions this year.

Elsewhere, the top 10 also includes a Latin American entrant, Universidad de Chile in eighth place, while the University of Witwatersrand is the strongest African representative, up two spots to rank 13th for mining engineering this year. In Europe, the highest ranked entrant is the Camborne School of Mines at the University of Exeter, ranked joint 14th alongside Mexico’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), which went up eight spots this year.
