Newcastle Graduates Stay in UK for Six Months After University with New Visa Scheme

Submitted by sponsored.cont… on Tue, 04/03/2018 - 14:48

Sponsored by Newcastle University Business School

Visa applications will be made a lot easier for prospective one-year master’s students applying to Newcastle University this year, thanks to a new visa pilot scheme.

Eligible international students applying to the prestigious Russell Group university will no longer be required to submit certificates, transcripts or documents showing they meet the Tier 4 visa maintenance requirements in their applications. The Tier 4 visa pilot has also increased the period students can stay in the UK after completing their programs from four to six months.

Anyone in the University’s 2018-2019 intake who wishes to study for 13 months or less will be able to participate in the pilot, which has also been rolled out to 22 other universities in England.

Students from the European Union and European Economic Area do not need visas to study in the UK at present, but the pilot could help if you’re from elsewhere in the world and wish to live and work in the UK after university.

Lucy Backhurst, Head of Recruitment and Admissions at Newcastle University said, "Newcastle University continues to successfully recruit students from across the globe based on our reputation for providing a world-class teaching and learning environment. The new pilot provides a far more streamlined process for genuine students who truly wish to study here."

The government said the pilot would support international students who hope to remain in the UK after their degree and switch to a work visa.

Chief executive of the Russell Group, Dr Tim Bradshaw, said: “International students enrich the learning environment on our campuses, enable local businesses to connect globally and bring huge economic benefit to the UK.

“For every seven international undergraduate students at a Russell Group university, £1 million is added to the economy.”

“The extension of this pilot is good news. It offers students a streamlined visa application and expands our post-study work offer. This will help attract students to study here and enable the UK to benefit from talented international graduates.”

2018 saw a record number of international applications

Despite concerns from 56 percent of students that Brexit would have a negative impact on their career, the UK’s decision to leave the European Union hasn’t diminished the number of applications to UK universities, according to the latest UCAS figures.

2018 actually saw a rise in the number of international applications to UK universities - over 100,000 for the first time ever.

The number of applications from EU students from outside the UK also hit record levels in January, rising 3.6 percent.

Helen Thorne, director of external relations at UCAS, said: "The UK’s universities are highly popular with EU and international students because of the quality of the teaching and experience they offer.

"There are probably several factors influencing the increasing numbers of applicants from the EU and beyond.

"For example, the weaker pound makes the UK a cost effective place to study and the Government’s confirmation that EU students starting courses this autumn will be able to benefit from the existing financial support arrangements will have been beneficial."

The UK remains a top study abroad destination primarily thanks to the high standards of research and teaching established by its universities. There are currently 959 universities in the QS World University Rankings, including four within the top 10.

Also, eight UK universities are listed in the QS Best Student Cities Ranking 2017, including London and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, achieving high scores in desirability, employer activity and student experience.

在东京留学是什么感觉?

Submitted by sponsored.cont… on Tue, 03/27/2018 - 09:31

Top Civil Engineering Schools with Employers in 2018

Submitted by sabrina@qs.com on Thu, 03/22/2018 - 12:44

If you want to study civil engineering at an internationally renowned university, the civil engineering ranking of the QS World University Rankings by Subject is an excellent source of information. In it, you’ll discover the highest-ranked schools based within your chosen study destination, according to four different indicators.

One of these four is employer reputation, and with career prospects high on everyone’s list of priorities, this indicator is a crucial way of finding out which top civil engineering schools are well-regarded by the world’s leading employers.

Below, you’ll find a countdown of the highest-ranked civil engineering schools, according to employer reputation. Alternatively, you can also view the full civil engineering ranking here.

Honorable mentions

While they weren’t ranked in the top 10 for the employer reputation category this year, there were several top civil engineering schools which nonetheless deserve a mention for appearing in the overall top 10:

=10. University of Tokyo

Starting off our list of the 10 top civil engineering schools with employers is Japan’s University of Tokyo, which is ranked 12th overall for this subject. The university aims to promote the employability, intellectual development and skills and knowledge of its students by providing coursework, research opportunities and internships on the crucial aspects of civil engineering, design, policy making and management. It was also featured at 14th in the most recent QS Graduate Employability Rankings.

=10. Tsinghua University

Ranked fifth in this year’s civil engineering ranking and joint 10th for employer reputation, China’s Tsinghua University has been teaching civil engineering since 1926, and has developed a strong reputation for conducting cutting-edge scientific research and developing talents to further China’s national development.

The department’s recently been involved with strengthening connections with both domestic and international enterprises, having established a national engineering practice teaching center with the China State Construction Engineering Corporation in 2011.

=8. Kyushu University

Japan’s Kyushu University is ranked in the 101-150 range for this year’s civil engineering ranking, but is astonishingly joint eighth with Stanford for employer reputation. While it may not be as well-known as some of the other universities in this list, Kyushu is clearly looked upon favorably by employers, and aims to provide students with highly employable skills such as problem solving and leadership.

Kyushu also offers an education with an international focus, as well as internships with affiliated industries, government offices, and academia.

=8. Stanford University

Ranked eighth both overall and for employer reputation in this year’s civil engineering ranking, the US’ Stanford University was number one in the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2018 and aims to empower students to cultivate personalized networks that shape their professional journey.

All students have access to the Career Development Center, recently renamed BEAM (Bridging Education, Ambition & Meaningful Work), in which students can explore possible career paths, find internships and job opportunities, attend employer connection events and more.

7. Peking University

China’s Peking University is ranked in the 51-100 range for civil engineering and seventh for employer reputation. The university has an innovative study abroad model known as the Globex Julmester program, which focuses on the core elements of 21st century progress: engineering & science, entrepreneurship & business, society & globalization. This program aims to enhance students’ global and professional experience by offering unique, career-oriented courses and off-campus activities which create links between China and the world.

6. Waseda University

Climbing from the 151-200 range to the 101-150 range in this year’s civil engineering ranking, Japan’s Waseda University was founded in 1882 as Tokyo College and began offering engineering programs in 1908. Graduates of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering have gone on to work in diverse roles, from town planning and social infrastructure fields such as railway and highway companies, to the civil service, energy, communications and construction.

Waseda’s famous alumni includes CEOs, presidents and founders/co-founders of companies such as Honda, Toshiba, Samsung, Nintendo and Sony.

5. University of Oxford

The next of our top civil engineering schools with employers is the University of Oxford, which is based in the UK. Oxford is ranked 16th overall for civil engineering this year and also achieves a high score for its academic reputation.

Graduates of Oxford’s four-year MEng (Hons) engineering degree earn an average of £29,000 six months after graduation, working in many different sectors such as banking and investment, consultancy, accountancy, IT and computing, energy, the environment and, of course, engineering.

4. University of Cambridge

Ranked fourth for employer reputation, University of Cambridge is ranked second overall in the civil engineering ranking and like Oxford is also highly rated by academics. Notable alumni and researchers to be associated with Cambridge include Carol Vorderman, Ian Liddel (who designed the Millennium Dome), and Frank Whittle, who invented the jet engine. Cambridge has strong links with industry, with many research projects funded by industrial companies.

3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Ranked the best place in the world for studying civil engineering (and several other branches of engineering) this year, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (MIT CEE) has a mission of educating both inside and outside the classroom, and equips students with the fundamental skills needed to succeed as a civil and environmental engineer through its ACET-accredited undergraduate program. Students can also improve their employability through research projects, fieldwork programs and internships.

2. Tokyo Institute of Technology

Tokyo Institute of Technology, known as Tokyo Tech, made an impressive leap in this year’s civil engineering ranking, climbing from joint 43rd to joint 31st. This was partly helped by a much-improved score for its employer reputation.

Tokyo Tech aims to cultivate distinguished engineers and researchers with a leadership mindset in the civil engineering field who can contribute to the international community, and helps students access career counseling, internships, support events and more.

1. Kyoto University

Ranked number one for employer reputation in this year’s ranking of the world’s top civil engineering schools, Japanese institution Kyoto University is also ranked 13th overall. Like Tokyo Tech, Kyoto is active in supporting students’ employability, with its International Center offering Japanese language and business etiquette classes for international students wishing to work in Japan after graduation.

International students can also attend the annual Career Guidance & Job Fair in June, in which they can meet representatives from companies in various cities.

Top Universities in the US for Computer Science in 2018

Submitted by sabrina@qs.com on Wed, 03/21/2018 - 11:09

If you want to study computer science in the US, there are no shortage of options, with 93 US universities featured in the latest ranking of the world’s 500 top computer science schools.

Computer science is just one of 48 subjects to be featured in the recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018, and six of the top 10 US universities listed below are also in the top 10 globally.

10. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

Also one of the 10 most improved computer science schools in this year’s ranking, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) climbed five places to now rank joint 22nd in the world for computer science along with Japan’s University of Tokyo.

Five Reasons Business is The Best Thing to Study at University

Submitted by guillermo_450@… on Fri, 03/16/2018 - 12:52

Have you ever been passionate about knowing how organizations work? Or how to create and promote a product or service? Is one of your favorite famous people a renowned business leader?

If at least one of the answers to these questions is yes, then you should probably be thinking about studying business at university. From my personal experience, pursuing a business and management degree can do wonders for your career and there are few other degree options which will prepare you for the working world to the same extent.

Here are five reasons why studying business is the best thing to study at university.

You’ll learn how to become an entrepreneur

When you’re studying business, you gain knowledge of a wide range of subjects. From finance and marketing to strategic management and design thinking, the variety is immense, and all of these skills will be essential if you want to start a business and become your own boss someday.

As the final project of my master’s degree, I will create a business and pitch the idea to a panel of judges from the business community. This will give me the opportunity to apply my knowledge as I design the structure of a company. If you’d also like to work independently by creating a start-up, then business is the career for you.

You get fantastic experience of networking

In life, it’s not always about what you know, it’s who you know too. By studying business, you’ll have the chance to develop meaningful relationships with your classmates, your lecturers, and guest speakers. Moreover, you can attend networking events to meet potential contacts, and even use tools such as LinkedIn to create your professional brand online.

By reaching the right people, you can be one step closer to achieving your goals of getting a job, or even becoming a manager in another country.

Few other degrees are as good at developing your soft-skills

Studying business means you’ll have a chance to develop various important skills in addition to your academic knowledge. These soft skills are things every professional requires in today’s workplace. In my case, I’ve been able to improve my public speaking skills through presentations, learn how to work in teams through group work, adapt my communication style when working with people from different cultures, and enhance my critical thinking abilities by writing essays and reports.

You’ll also feel more confident as you learn new things and leverage the opportunities that come your way.

Business degrees offer a fantastic, practical education

Many of the top business schools offer internships as a way for students to apply their knowledge. By gaining work experience, you’ll get an idea of how a company works from the inside and be able to relate your learning experience to the real world. An internship can also be a pathway to getting a part-time or full-time job.

Another way of getting experience is through volunteering, in which you can gain new skills while giving back to the community. In my case, my university offers volunteering opportunities for students on campus and I had the opportunity to volunteer as part of the Orientation Week Team. This involved welcoming new students to campus, which was both an awesome experience and a chance to develop my initiative and my communication skills. This is also a fantastic way to improve your CV as employers look for people who are committed to social causes.

The work you do will be helping other businesses thrive

If you want a degree which can help you give back to society, consider the fact the skills and abilities you’ll learn while studying business will ultimately be the key to helping companies be successful. If you enjoy tackling the big picture, using your problem-solving skills and helping others, then you could use your business degree as a stepping stone towards a career in consultancy.

Whatever you decide to do after you’ve graduated, studying business will help you tremendously at both a personal and professional level. So, take a look at this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject and choose a top-ranked university for business & management that’s near you.
