5 Things Every Business Student is Tired of Hearing

Submitted by mp@allaboutmel… on Wed, 03/14/2018 - 14:40

Ask any business student and they'll tell you they hear the same things over and over again whenever discussing their course with relatives, professors or even complete strangers.

Does it ever stop? Well, I've got some bad news for you people: it doesn't. I'll tell you something though, you're definitely not alone in this boat as many other business students out there share your misery.

As for the rest of you, if you ever find yourself chatting to someone studying business and you're about to say one of the following five things, just don't.

You must be really good at math

via GIPHY

Is that so? Because if so, I must have missed that I’m a freaking genius. In all honesty, most of us are just trying to get the math subjects over with. And while doing that, we're trying hard not to look like we are suffering.

So what do you do after graduation? Open a shop or something?

via GIPHY

I don’t know, you tell me? It takes time to figure out what you want to do when you “grow up”. Especially, when you have one idea of a job in your head during university and that doesn't match with what the job would actually involve in real life. But yeah, we might own a business or two.

To pass this class, you need to read all the material from the syllabus

via GIPHY

This one goes out to the professors with ridiculously unrealistic expectations. No one has ever done this. Let’s face it, most of us just rely on the summaries from the lecture slides every professor uploads. If they don’t waste their time talking about something, why would we?

What's your GPA again?

via GIPHY

Excuse me, what? Every person has the right to privacy and this is the kind of thing you wouldn't willingly disclose unless you have a perfect score and want to show off.

You should probably stop going out for dinner every night

via GIPHY

OK, I realize this isn't something every business student does, or even something exclusive to business students, but who honestly has the time and motivation to cook a three-course meal to satisfy their inner dragon when you can get in and out of a restaurant so much faster with minimal effort? We've got too much on our plate (get it?) without worrying about cooking a balanced diet in between our business lectures. Just add the food money to the student loans already.

Interestingly, mechanical engineering was the first degree-granting program to be offered at the university after it was established in 1895.

Georgia Tech undergraduates who aren’t state residents pay tuition fees of US$30,604 per year, plus mandatory student fees of $2,410. Scholarship options include the George W. Woodruff Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering, aimed at needy and deserving students who are pursuing a career in mechanical engineering, and the Provost Scholarship, which consists of tuition waivers awarded to 40 non-state resident freshmen for eight semesters.

9. The University of Tokyo

Heading to Japan, the University of Tokyo is ranked ninth in this year’s mechanical engineering ranking, achieving its highest score for employer reputation. The university conducts research and provides education in four fundamental disciplines of the subject: mechanical dynamics, material mechanics, hydrodynamics and thermodynamics.

Mechanical engineering students at the University of Tokyo pay ¥535,800 (~US$5,050) per year at all levels, and you’ll need to pay additional fees for admission and examinations. The university offers a Special Scholarship for International Students, which aims to provide research grants to high-achieving international postgraduate students. International students could also apply for Japanese Government MEXT Scholarships. You can browse more scholarships to study in Japan here.

8. Imperial College London

The next of our top mechanical engineering schools is based in the UK. Imperial College London is ranked eighth for this subject this year, achieving its strongest score for its reputation among employers.

Students of Imperial’s professionally accredited MEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree pay £9,250 (~€10,400) per year if they’re a home/EU student and £29,000 (~US$32,500) per year if they’re an overseas non-EU student.

Only UK students are eligible for the Imperial Bursary, which provides financial support for students on a sliding scale based on their household income. However, all full-time undergraduates of any nationality will be considered for the President's Undergraduate Scholarships, with up to 112 scholarships of £1,000 each available in 2018-19.

You can explore more scholarships to study in the UK here.

7. University of Oxford

Also in the UK, the University of Oxford retains its position of seventh among the world’s top mechanical engineering schools. At undergraduate level, mechanical engineering can be selected as a specialization within the university’s four-year MEng in Engineering Science program.

For the MEng, UK and EU students at Oxford pay £9,250 a year, while overseas students pay a total of £31,455 (~US$43,500) per year including the college fee.  Scholarships include the Reach Oxford Scholarship for undergraduate students from low-income countries, which awards tuition and college fees, a grant for living expenses and one return air fare per year. You can search for a scholarship based on your study level, fee status and country of residence here.

6. University of Michigan

The University of Michigan is ranked sixth in this year’s mechanical engineering ranking and achieves a very high score for its academic reputation. The university’s mechanical engineering department is celebrating its 150-year anniversary this year and continues to be a world leader in research and education.

Non-Michigan residents at the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering pay $26,630 per year at undergraduate level and $24,343 per year at graduate level. In most cases, you’ll automatically be considered for merit-based scholarships when you submit your main application, but there are also specific departmental scholarships. You can read about the College of Engineering’s scholarships here and find general information on scholarships offered by the university here.

5. University of California, Berkeley (UCB)

Ranked fifth among the top mechanical engineering universities, University of California, Berkeley (UCB) receives very strong scores for employer reputation and citations per paper, the latter measuring the institution’s research impact.

In terms of tuition fees, international students at UCB pay $45,014 per year at undergraduate level and $33,734 per year at graduate level. While these figures may seem eye-wateringly high, most of UCB’s students receive some kind of financial aid, and the university’s Department of Mechanical Engineering offers scholarships such as the Alexander & Ethel Levens Mechanical Engineering Award, which awards $500 to two mechanical engineering students. Berkeley’s International Office also offers grants for international graduate students who demonstrate financial need.

4. Harvard University

Harvard University retains its position of fourth among the world’s top mechanical engineering schools, with very high scores for employer reputation and citations per paper. Mechanical engineering research work at Harvard varies from solid and fluid mechanics to diverse studies in materials, mechanical systems, and biomechanics.

Tuition fees currently stand at $44,990 per year plus fees of $3,959, and Harvard is one of the few US universities to be need-blind to all students, regardless of nationality, meaning the university won’t consider your ability to pay when deciding whether to offer you a place. More than 50 percent of students receive scholarship aid, which is designed to completely cover your demonstrated financial need.

3. University of Cambridge

The highest-ranked UK entrant in the mechanical engineering ranking this year, the University of Cambridge achieves its best scores for employer and academic reputation. It offers a unique undergraduate MEng course which allows students to keep their options open while gaining the analytical, design and computing skills which underpin modern engineering practice.

Cambridge’s four-year MEng degree costs £9,250 (~€10,400) per year for home or EU students and £30,678 (~US$42,500) per year for overseas (non-EU) students. International students looking to study at Cambridge could check the Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust, a charity which aims to make a Cambridge education accessible to outstanding students from all parts of the world, regardless of their social and economic background. You can read more about financial support at Cambridge here (undergraduate) and here (graduate).

2. Stanford University

Ranked second among the top mechanical engineering universities in the world, Stanford University receives a near-perfect score for the H-index citations indicator. Stanford’s research aims to “push the limits of the possible” with multi-disciplinary research that employs a range of methodologies: design thinking, computational simulation, control systems and multi-scale approaches.

All of Stanford’s undergraduate programs cost US$48,987 per year ($16,329 per quarter), or if you’re studying engineering at graduate level, the fees are US$52,188 per year ($17,396 per quarter). Stanford has a limited amount of financial aid available to international students, and you should request consideration for financial aid along with your main application.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is again ranked first in the world for mechanical engineering (and is also first for several other branches of engineering) with perfect scores for all but one of the ranking indicators. One of the original six courses offered when classes at MIT first began in 1865, mechanical engineering at MIT combines a world-class education with thorough analysis and hands-on discovery.

Like Harvard, MIT is need-blind to all students regardless of nationality, and pledges to meet every undergraduate student’s demonstrated financial need for all four years of their degree. At graduate level, the university’s Department of Mechanical Engineering provides financial assistance in the form of research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and fellowships, with the majority of students supported by research assistantships.

How Being Bilingual Makes You a Better Thinker

Submitted by mathilde@qs.com on Tue, 03/13/2018 - 15:01

The ability to switch between languages at the drop of a hat is often presented in English-speaking countries as a rare gift, one that gives you unparalleled social and cognitive ability — but while Brits and Americans often don’t bother to learn an additional language, it’s actually quite common elsewhere in the world. In fact, experts estimate that over half of the global population speak more than one language, and that number appears to be on the rise.

Speaking multiple languages makes you more rational

How does this ability to speak multiple languages affect your behavior and experience of the world? Polyglots often report they feel like a different person when they speak in another language. They become more impulsive, laidback or even more rational depending on whether they’re speaking Spanish or Mandarin.

A recent study carried out by psychologists at the University of Chicago found that polyglots are more likely to make rational decisions when they think through a problem in their second language. Why? Well, apparently it’s because your native language carries deep-seated bias that may influence how you envision risk.

Professor Boaz Keysar, a psychologist involved in the study, said: “Our new findings demonstrate that such aversion to losses is much reduced when people make decisions in their non-native language.

“A foreign language provides a distancing mechanism that moves people from the immediate intuitive system to a more deliberate mode of thinking.”

Brain imaging research backed up the findings of this study, by showing that the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain used for rational thought, is activated when bilinguals speak in their second language. According to the study, when bilinguals speak in their second language, their brain inhibits their emotions and intuitions, prompting them to make more rational decisions in their second language.

Grammar changes how you see the world

The structure and grammar of a particular language can also shape how you interpret the world. This means bilingual speakers are able to switch between perspectives depending on the language context they’re in.

Evidence of this was found in recent research, which showed that German-English bilinguals interpret events differently based on the language context they’re in. Linguists at Stockholm and Lancaster University asked German and English monolingual and bilingual speakers to describe what happened in a video clip they were shown of a woman walking towards a car.

In their descriptions, English speakers tended to focus on the motion of walking itself rather than the destination. So, for example, instead of saying “a woman is walking towards a car”, English speakers would simply say “a woman is walking”. German speakers on the other hand were more likely to mention the car.

Panos Athanasopoulos, Professor of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University, offered a possible explanation for why this might be. “English requires its speakers to grammatically mark events that are ongoing, by obligatorily applying the –ing morpheme: ‘I am playing the piano and I cannot come to the phone’ or ‘I was playing the piano when the phone rang’. German doesn’t have this feature.”

So, while English speakers focus on the action itself, German speakers are more likely to pay attention to its outcome. Meanwhile, bilingual speakers are able to go back and forth between each perspective, depending on the language they’re thinking in.

How do you describe the passing of time?

Language has such a profound impact on the way we think, it can even affect how we visualize time. In a later study, Athanasopoulos and Professor Emanuel Bylund from the Stellenbosch University and Stockholm University discovered that bilinguals perceive the passage of time differently depending on their language context.

Swedish and English speakers tend to describe the duration of a particular event in terms of physical distances (a short break, a long day), while Greek and Spanish speakers visualize the passage of time as a growing volume (a small break, a big day).

To measure this, Athanasopoulos and Bylund asked Spanish-Swedish bilinguals to watch a straight line grow across a computer screen or a container being filled for a set period of time. The participants were then asked to estimate how much time had passed. The study found that bilinguals used volume or distance metaphors, depending on whether they had been prompted in Spanish or Swedish, whether or not they had been shown the line or the container.

Athanasopoulos said: “By having another language, you have an alternative vision of the world. You can listen to music from only one speaker, or you can listen in stereo. It’s the same with language.”

My experience

As a bilingual speaker, I’m not surprised by some of these findings - particularly that language can be so deep-rooted it can actually shape your perception of the world. I was brought up speaking French, but my family moved to England for a year when I was still in primary school. Even though I speak and think in English most of the time, some things are just too ingrained.

For example, I can’t seem to stop myself from gendering nouns and inanimate objects in my head. I think of ants and bananas as intrinsically female. Cats and radiators are male. I also struggle to read bedside stories to my little nephew in English without stumbling over words or switching to French.

Of course, all of this stuff depends on what I’m doing, who I’m speaking to and where I am. The two languages in my head are constantly fighting to hog the duvet, and the smallest thing like a memory or a feeling can give one language an advantage over the other. As I’ve got older, I’ve learned to cherish these idiosyncrasies rather than iron them out. They’re worth it for all the other benefits bilingualism brings.

毕业后应该居家工作吗?

Submitted by ella@inspiring… on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 14:55

10 of the Most Improved Universities for Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies in 2018

Submitted by craig@qs.com on Thu, 03/08/2018 - 17:11

Click here to discover the top universities for theology in 2019.

Launched last year, the theology, divinity & religious studies ranking is the fastest way to find out which universities are the best in the world for this subject. One of 48 academic disciplines to be featured in this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject, theology degrees can lead to jobs in teaching, social work, non-profits and (of course) religion.

Below, you’ll find the top 10 universities for theology this year, but before then we’ll explore the most improved institutions within this year’s top 50. If you want to view the full ranking table, click here.

Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster

Our first top university for theology which has improved this year is Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, based in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. Otherwise known as the University of Münster, this public institution has climbed to 44th, having been ranked 51-100.

This rise, which is at least seven places, means it’s the fifth best university in Germany for studying theology. The university’s evangelical theological faculty is one of the largest training centers focused on Protestant theology in Germany.

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München

Next on our list is another German institution, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. This Munich-based institution is up nine places this year to 32nd, although it continues to struggle to score highly for employer reputation (it’s ranked 88th for this particular indicator).

The university has faculties of both Catholic and Protestant theology. The Catholic faculty teaching is split into five sections (biblical, historical, systematic, and practical theology as well as study and research units). The Protestant faculty is responsible for training Lutheran priests and religious teachers, as well as interdisciplinary fields such as medical ethics and cultural history.

University of Notre Dame

Also up nine places this year, the University of Notre Dame is now ranked seventh in the world. Scoring a perfect 100 for H-index citations, the US university is now the third best institution for theology in the US.

Notre Dame’s theology department focuses its teaching and thinking on six areas in particular: moral theology, world religions and world church, the history of Christianity, liturgy, biblical studies, and systematic theology.

University of Sydney

Having only scraped into the top 50 last year, the University of Sydney is now up 12 places to be ranked 37th. The Australian university scores particularly highly for its reputation with employers and is the second-best institution in Australia overall for theology.

Sydney’s Department of Studies in Religion is part of the arts and social sciences faculty. The undergraduate program touches on sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, philosophy, textual studies and history, each with the intention of analyzing the ways people explain their existence.

University of Birmingham

The first British university to be included in this list of most improved top universities for theology, the University of Birmingham has climbed 12 places to 23rd this year.

Home to students from over 20 countries, Birmingham’s department of theology and religion covers a broad spectrum of religions. Undergraduate degrees available touch on philosophy, politics and ethics in addition to religion and theology. It’s also possible to study a joint honors degree in history and theology. Master’s programs focus on topics such as Islamic studies and Holocaust and genocide.

University of British Columbia

Having previously been ranked 51-100, the University of British Columbia has climbed at least 12 places to 39th in the world for theology this year. One of seven Canadian institutions to be ranked this year, the University of British Columbia is also home to the Vancouver School of Theology.

Intended to educate and form Christian leaders, the Vancouver School of Theology offers graduate study in ministry programs as well as theological research degrees. The school does also offer teaching in divinity, inter-religious studies and other areas.

International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)

The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is the first institution in this list of most improved universities for theology to be explicitly non-Christian in its teaching focus. IIUM has climbed an astonishing 15 places this year, to now be ranked 31st in the world.

Teaching at IIUM in theology focuses on Islamic teachings and thought, and so many degrees feature this prominently (the Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Thought and Civilization, for example). Some programs are taught in Arabic and students will need to show evidence of proficiency when applying.

Aarhus University

Previously ranked 51-100, Aarhus University is now considered to be the 29th best university for theology in the world, a vast improvement which also means it’s the best university in Denmark for this subject.

Aarhus provides you with one of the largest research environments for theological study, and the university’s strong research focus is reflected in how highly it scores for citations per paper in our ranking. Theology degree programs are available at both bachelor’s and master’s level, while a joint Nordic master’s is available in the Religious Roots of Europe.

Columbia University

The penultimate university we’re looking at in detail is Columbia University, which has climbed from joint 46th to 21st this year. Despite this climb, eight other American universities continue to be ranked higher than Columbia.

As well as the university’s department of religion, Columbia is also home to a theological seminary which aims to prepare students for ministry. If you’re focus is more academic, the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the university itself is likely to be of more interest. Students interested in applying for the master’s program must submit their GRE scores, but there is no subject-specific entrance test.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)

Our final university to have shown great improvement in this year’s theology ranking is the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), which didn’t feature at all in last year’s inaugural ranking. Now considered the 47th best place in the world to study theology, CUHK is the only institution from Hong Kong in this year’s ranking.

Theology degrees are offered by the university’s Divinity School of Chung Chi College, and have been since 1957. Bachelor’s degrees are available in both theology and divinity, while the range of postgraduate study options includes degrees in theological studies, Christian studies and ministry.

After #MeToo, College Women in America Are Organizing For Change

While the fight for gender equality is far from over, in many ways 2017 felt like the start of a reckoning. Although the year started with the inauguration of President Trump, the next day saw over three million women march in over 300 US cities in protest.

Then, in October, the Harvey Weinstein allegations shone a light on the sexual assault and misconduct suffered by millions of women, not just in Hollywood but in politics, the music industry, the media, the Silicon Valley and the sciences too.

The flood of #MeToo declarations on social media since then has brought open secrets into the spotlight and forced several uncomfortable conversations about sexism within society. This push for change has also proved inspirational, with a record-breaking number of women choosing to run for political office in the US this year.

447 women are intending to run for office in the US Senate and the House of Representatives, according to new data from the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University - more than twice the number of female nominees in 2016.

There may still be a long way to go before the boys’ club atmosphere in US politics, locker room talk and all, is gone completely, but the pessimism of early 2017 has given way to a determination that seems set to change the political landscape for good.

The power of #MeToo

When the first stories of sexism, sexual harassment and sexual assault or rape started to be shared on social media as part of the #MeToo movement, few of those involved likely expected their words to inspire real political change.

However, for the current generation of female college students and activists, #MeToo was a call to arms, and an example of how social media can be used to organize disparate voices into a movement.

“#MeToo is absolutely something that I’ve seen directly inspire college women to get involved in politics”, says Jenna McGreevy, Communications Director for Pennsylvania College Democrats. “It’s helped women realize that there aren’t equal levels of representation for women in the United States. We’re actually much far behind other developed nations in terms of the percentage of women we have working in all levels of government.”

Jenna has seen this political awakening reflected in the new generation of college women getting involved by joining the College Democrats’ women’s caucuses and taking up student leadership positions.

Crucial to these efforts to increase awareness and representation is social media. As with #MeToo, sites like Facebook and Twitter have been vital tools for Jenna and others to organize students, particularly when it comes to elections.

“So many events happen within 24 hours’ notice, and special elections are sometimes confusing to people. They’re not sure they’re in the right district to vote or they may not even know that a special election is happening. Social media sites like Facebook or Twitter are a good way to spread the word and make sure people are registered to vote.”

Jenna is hopeful that this increased interest in politics from college women and signs of increased female representation in politics will be beneficial for democracy in more ways than one.

Citing a 2017 study, she says: “Female politicians are more collaborative and work on more bipartisan efforts, but they also tend to be less extreme in terms of what their actual ideological goals are. They’re less likely to vote on a bill that has a really negative top outcome for women or that’s super anti-environment, for example.”

The Trump effect

Of course, it’s not just #MeToo that’s responsible for this rise in political engagement among young women. A Politico survey of 2,000 people suggests the election of Donald Trump as US president sparked interest in what’s happening in politics, particularly among Democrats and women.

Unimpressed with the current commander-in-chief (Trump’s approval rating with women is a dismal 33 percent, according to a February 2018 poll), women have clearly decided to fix the problem themselves. Politico has even labelled this the “Trump effect”, saying: “Democrats – especially women – hold very negative feelings for Trump, and those feelings have indeed generated more political interest and activity.”

While the survey conducted in May last year noted that heightened interest in politics was in most cases not sufficient to convince women to run for office, it discovered that a small fraction of women, 28 percent, had considered running for office for the first time in the last six months.

The survey also discovered that organizations recruiting women to work on campaigns or run for office have seen a surge of interest, particularly from female Democrats.

One of these organizations is Running Start, a non-profit focused on providing high school and college women with the contacts, skills and confidence they need to run for office. Jessica Kelly, programs and leadership director at the organization, said: “Research here in the US shows that it’s around high school and college that the ambition drops off, particularly for women.

“[There is] a big disparity in the encouragement young girls get from everyone in their lives - parents, teachers, coaches, other authority figures - and we’re trying to be that voice, to step in and to say: ‘Yes, you have a place in politics. Here are some of the skills you’ll need to help build that confidence to pursue it.’”

As well as teaching young women the skills and confidence needed to run for office, organizations like Running Start also provide an invaluable support network for those entering the male-dominated environment of politics.

As the #MeToo movement showed, this ability to share stories publicly and find support easily is key, especially as stories of sexual misconduct and harassment at the upper echelons of government have made the headlines multiple times recently.

“If you don’t feel that you have anyone that you trust, call us at Running Start, and we’ll be those people for you,” says Jessica. “You definitely do not have to be in a position that makes you uncomfortable. You deserve to be in the room. Whether that’s at a job, an internship, or running for office, you deserve to be there and should not be made to feel uncomfortable.”

Thinking of getting involved?

It may be a long way from the White House, but it’s entirely possible the future leaders of America are young women currently studying somewhere in the US who are about to enter the world of politics for the very first time.

For Maggie Kautz, a student in optical sciences and engineering at the University of Arizona, that entrance into politics came after reading about a bipartisan student club called No Labels in the school newspaper.

At one of their sessions, she met members of the University of Arizona Young Democrats, an organization she is now president of. “I went to a Young Dems meeting and I got to meet the people involved and make some friends. We went to a luncheon for Planned Parenthood in the first couple of weeks I’d joined the club and we went up to Flagstaff to canvas for Ann Kirkpatrick who was running for senate at the time.”

These initial experiences of the world of politics inspired Maggie to get even more involved, and she’s currently working on a voter registration campaign on campus ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

2018 will be particularly interesting year for Arizona politics. Republican Rep. Trent Franks’ seat will be up for grabs in April after he resigned following allegations of sexual harassment, and the two women hoping to turn his seat blue are physician Hiral Tipirneni (D) and transgender activist Brianna Westbrook (D), who received Chelsea Manning’s official endorsement.

Maggie says she’s cautiously confident of a positive outcome. “Women have a really good shot at taking senate seats and house seats in Arizona. Arizona almost went blue during the 2016 elections, and Hillary actually won Pima County where the University of Arizona Young Dems are working.”

Of course, Arizona isn’t the only place with an important election this year (you can find a handy rundown of key 2018 election dates here, courtesy of the New York Times). Wherever you’re studying and whichever party you support, your efforts could make the difference and, as Maggie’s story shows, it’s really easy to get started.

North America

Harvard University

Harvard University has dropped from first to third place in this year’s anthropology ranking but is nonetheless the highest-ranked university in North America for this subject. Harvard can also lay claim to having perfect scores for two of the four indicators used to compile the rankings: employer reputation and H-index citations (a measure of research impact).

At undergraduate level, Harvard University’s Department of Anthropology offers you the choice of concentrating in archaeology, social anthropology, or a combined track that brings together both fields. Students of the archaeology or social anthropology track can also study a joint concentration with another subject such as history, classics, computer science, gender studies or African and African-American studies.

University of California, Berkeley (UCB)

Down from joint second to fifth in this year’s anthropology ranking, the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) receives a perfect score for citations per paper, a measure of research impact. As well as its general anthropology courses, UCB offers graduate concentrations in biological anthropology, folklore, medical anthropology and sociocultural anthropology. This breadth of fields creates a vibrant community of students with diverse goals, research approaches and backgrounds.

University of Chicago

The University of Chicago retains its position of sixth in the world for anthropology this year, earning very high scores for citations per paper and employer reputation. The university’s Department of Anthropology has a longstanding commitment to both traditional and theoretical research interests in areas such as post-coloniality, human rights and neoliberalism. At postgraduate level, you can take doctoral degrees in sociocultural and linguistic anthropology and archaeology.

Top anthropology schools in Canada

Elsewhere in North America, there are six top anthropology schools in Canada, with the University of Toronto up three places to rank eighth in the world this year. Two more Canadian institutions are in the global top 50 of the anthropology ranking: the University of British Columbia (27th) and McGill University (40th).

Europe

University of Cambridge

Up one place to now rank first in the world for anthropology for the first time, the University of Cambridge’s Department of Social Anthropology offers an excellent quality of education and research as well as unparalleled facilities such as the Haddon Library, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the department’s own unique collection of ethnographic films.

Taught at Cambridge since 1900, the foundations of modern anthropology have been laid at the university over the years by celebrated figures in the field such as Henry Maine, James Frazer, Alfred Haddon, and William Rivers. The university has also led the way in some of the most pioneering innovations in the study of kinship, political systems and religious practice and symbolism.

University of Oxford

Ranked second in the world for anthropology after Cambridge, the University of Oxford receives its highest score for academic reputation. Its Institute of Social & Cultural Anthropology was the first to specialize in postgraduate teaching and research within the discipline and is now a leading center for anthropological research and education. If you study anthropology at Oxford you’ll find your time divided between lectures, tutorials and practical classes, and you’ll also undertake at least four weeks of fieldwork anywhere in the world – recent destinations for this have included South Africa, Canada and Cuba.

London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

Known as one of the world’s leading social-science-focused universities, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is ranked fourth in the world for anthropology this year, achieving a very high score for its academic reputation.

LSE’s Department of Anthropology is one of the most famous in the world, having been associated with noted anthropologists like Bronislaw Malinowski. 国外实习的五个原因

Submitted by guest.writer@qs.com on Wed, 03/07/2018 - 11:26
