Scholarships to Study in the BRICS Countries
Want to study abroad in Brazil, Russia, India, China or South Africa? To mark the launch of the 2018 edition of the QS BRICS University Rankings, here’s a selection of scholarships to study abroad in these five emerging economies.
Scholarships to study in Brazil
- OAS-GCUB Scholarship Program – The Organization of American States and Brazil’s Coimbra Group of universities have partnered to offer 670 Brazilian scholarship opportunities to outstanding citizens of OAS member states to complete masters or PhD programs at Brazilian universities.
- Canada-Brazil Awards – Joint Research Projects – These awards aim to promote cross-cultural research ventures between Canadian schools and Brazilian partners.
- IBRASIL Project – Erasmus Mundus – International scholarships for EU students to study in Brazil.
- The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Fellowships – Fellowships for PhD and postdoctoral scientists from developing countries to work abroad in Brazil, Mexico or other countries.
Russian scholarships
- Government of Russian Federation Scholarships – A set number of government scholarships to study in Russia are available each year, which offer free tuition, accommodation and a monthly maintenance allowance.
- The School of Russian and Asian Studies (SRAS) – A selection of international scholarships to study abroad in Russia and other former Soviet states, most of which are explicitly for US students.
- Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project – Russia's first international competition for prospective Master's students to study for free at one of the top universities in Russia.
- American Councils Scholarships – A range of scholarships are on offer to conduct research or undergo Russian language training in Russia, covering travel costs, a monthly allowance, health insurance and more.
- BP in Russia Research Scholarships – Russian scholarships ranging from RUB 15,000-35,000 (~US$255-600) a month, aimed at students studying degrees related to energy and economics at a partner Russian institution. Candidates must be studying on state grants, have exceptional grades and aim to progress in their chosen subject in the future.

Scholarships to study in India
- Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme – Government scholarships funded by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) are available for students from commonwealth countries to study a degree at any study level (excluding medicine and dentistry).
- Merit-cum-Means Scholarship Scheme – Government scholarships aiming to help commendable students from poor backgrounds and minority groups (Muslim/Christian/Sikh/Buddhist/Jain/Parsi) to study professional or technical courses. These scholarships take your parents’ income into account and cover tuition fees and a pocket allowance.
- ICCR Africa Scholarships – Scholarships for African students to study abroad in India.
Scholarships to study in China
- CAS-TWAS President’s PhD Fellowship Program – International scholarships to complete a PhD in China.
- Chinese Scholarships-Great Wall Program – Scholarships for overseas students to study in China for a year at any level of study.
- Chinese Government Scholarships – Available for EU students at all degree levels to study in China.
- Zhejiang University Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program – Scholarships for Asian students to complete a two-year English-taught master’s degree in public administration at Zhejiang University.
- Tsinghua University Doctoral Scholarship – Full or partial tuition scholarships are available for foreign students to study a doctorate degree at Tsinghua University.
- Peking University Academic Excellence Scholarships – Scholarships for outstanding international students who have already been admitted to Peking University.
Scholarships to study in South Africa
- South African German Centre for Development Research Scholarships – Scholarships are available for outstanding Sub-Saharan Africans and South African students to study masters and PhD degrees in development studies (or a related subject) at the University of the Western Cape.
- Canon Collins Scholarships for Postgraduate Study in South Africa – Scholarships for students from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia or Zimbabwe to study a postgraduate degree relating to the areas of justice, education or humanities.
- University of Cape Town International/Refugee Scholarships – Renewable scholarships for non-South African students to study a full-time postgraduate degree at the University of Cape Town. These scholarships are supplementary, meaning you must already have the required funds for your studies.
- Stellenbosch University Graduate School Scholarships – Scholarships to study a PhD at the School of Economic and Management Sciences at Stellenbosch University.
- Surfshark Privacy and Security Scholarship - A $2,000 prize is available to a student currently enrolled in South Africa or another study destination as a high school, undergraduate or graduate student. You will need to submit an essay to apply and the scholarship is open to all nationalities.
- Rhodes University Postgraduate Scholarships – Various scholarships for both South African and international students to study a postgraduate degree at Rhodes University. Each scholarship has its own eligibility requirements regarding the applicable subject/s and whether you need to demonstrate financial need or academic excellence.

Best Places to Study a Master's in Finance in the US & Canada
If you want to study a master’s in finance, and you’re trying to decide on a university in the US or Canada, the new QS Masters in Finance Rankings is a good place to start, currently featuring 131 universities and business schools, including 49 in the US and four in Canada. The ranking is based on a methodology that assesses each institution’s reputation amongst academics and employers, alumni outcomes, student & faculty diversity and other factors.

1. MIT Sloan School of Management
Ranked second in the QS Masters in Finance Rankings (after London Business School), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)’s Sloan School of Management is featured for its Master of Finance degree and receives a perfect score for the ‘thought leadership’ indicator, demonstrating its huge academic standing and history of revolutionary ideas in management and finance, such as Theory X and Theory Y and the Solow–Swan model. Sloan’s motto, mens et manus (mind and hand) reflects the school’s emphasis on finding practical solutions to real problems.
2. UC Berkeley Haas School of Business
University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business is ranked fifth for its Master of Financial Engineering (MFE) degree, with full marks in the ‘value for money’ and ‘thought leadership indicators’. The course includes a 10-week internship, with students getting placements at companies such as Barclays, Morgan Stanley, the Bank of America and Uber. Students of Haas are therefore highly employable, and earn an average starting salary of US$155,514.
3. UCLA Anderson School of Management
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)’s Anderson School of Management is ranked seventh in the masters in finance ranking, with its Master of Financial Engineering (MFE) degree allowing students to learn from world-renowned faculty and prominent guest lecturers, and applying what they’ve learnt through a a summer internship and a hands-on Applied Finance Project (AFP), in which students can expand their professional networks and gain valuable exposure to possible employers.
4. University of Toronto Rotman School of Management
Heading to Canada, the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto is ranked 14th for its Master of Financial Risk Management degree, earning a very high score for the ‘thought leadership’ category, which takes into account staff with a PhD, research impact, and a global survey of academics. Rotman’s master’s degree offers strong connections to the finance industry and a two-month applied Risk Management Project, giving students the chance to with risk management professionals.
5. NYU Stern School of Business - MS in Global Finance
New York University (NYU)’s School of Business is ranked 23rd in the QS Masters in Finance rankings, earning very high scores for its alumni outcomes and thought leadership. Offered in collaboration with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), its MS in Global Finance degree is a one-year program with classes held in Hong Kong, New York and Shanghai. Students take 12 courses and one Integrative Group Project, in which they form small groups to work on real-world finance challenges.
6. USC Marshall School of Business - MSc in Finance
The University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business is ranked just one place behind NYU at 24th, and achieves a very strong score for the alumni outcomes category. Its MSc in Finance degree includes a range of elective courses on topics such as real estate and mergers and acquisitions. No minimum years of work experience required to apply, and the program is open to those who didn’t study business for their undergraduate degree.
7. Texas McCombs School of Business
Next in our look at the best places in the US and Canada to study a masters in finance, the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business is ranked 30th, again earning an impressive score for its alumni outcomes. Its Master of Science in Finance degree gives students a fast-paced introduction to finance theory combined with excel modeling and a range of other quantitative skills. The class size is only 50 students, which enables good quality student-professor interaction.
8. Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business - Quantitative & Computational Finance
Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech)’s Scheller College of Business is ranked 32nd in the masters in finance ranking, receiving a very high score for the ‘value for money’ indicator. Its Master of Science degree in Quantitative and Computational Finance (QCF) is interdisciplinary, taught between the university’s schools of engineering, business and mathematics. The course provides students with a strong foundation of quantitative and computational skills to use in complex mathematical modeling, as well as solid, practical knowledge of finance theory.
9. Ohio State Fisher College of Business - Master in Finance
Ranked 34th for its Master in Finance degree, Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business also achieves a very strong score for ‘value for money’, which takes into account students’ 10-year investment into their master’s degree. The course includes 15 hours of elective coursework, allowing students to tailor their degree and meet students from other courses within the college. Students can also broaden their knowledge and connections through co-curricular field trips and other activities with the university’s partner institutes, such as the Columbus CFA Society.
10. Boston Questrom School of Business - Master of Science in Mathematical Finance
Concluding our list is Boston University’s Questrom School of Business is ranked 38th for its Master of Science in Mathematical Finance (MSMF), a 17-month program in which students gain an indispensable knowledge of the complex relations between the numerous components of the modern financial system, specializing in Asset Management, Quantitative Analytics or Risk Management. The school achieves a very high score for its ‘alumni outcomes’, with the Class of 2016 earning an average salary of US$84,000.
Other top universities in Canada for Master’s in Finance degrees
In addition to the University of Toronto, three more top Canadian universities are ranked among the world’s best for master’s in finance degrees. These are HEC Montreal, ranked joint 52nd for its MSc in Finance degree, the Alberta School of Business, ranked 85th for its Master of Financial Management degree, and Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business, ranked in the 101+ range, which achieves the highest score among Canadian universities for its class & faculty diversity.

Harvard University has been named the best institution in the world for studying a full-time MBA in a brand new ranking of MBA programs around the world.
The QS World University Rankings: Global MBA Rankings 2018 have been published in association with our sister site TopMBA.com, and feature over 230 of the world’s best universities and business schools for studying an MBA.
Alongside the QS World University Rankings: Business Masters Rankings 2018 which were also published today, this new MBA ranking will be a vital tool for any business-minded or entrepreneurial students keen to learn more about the world’s best MBA programs.

45 of the world’s best business analytics programs have been ranked, with 10 countries across three different continents represented. London Business School Ranked Best in the World in QS Masters in Finance Rankings 2018
London Business School has been crowned the best institution in the world for studying a master’s degree in finance in the first edition of the QS World University Rankings: Masters in Finance Rankings.
New for 2018, this ranking has been published as part of the QS Business Masters Rankings, alongside other rankings of the world’s best management and business analytics postgraduate programs.
London Business School is one of two British institutions in the top 10, the other being the Said Business School at Oxford University which is ranked fourth. In between the two are the Sloan Graduate School of Management at MIT and HEC Paris in second and third respectively.

30 countries are represented in this year’s ranking, with the United States claiming the honor of being the most-represented country with a whopping 49 schools included. Trailing behind in second place is the United Kingdom with just 21.

HEC Paris Ranked Best in the World in QS Masters in Management Rankings 2018
HEC Paris has been crowned the best institution in the world for studying a master’s degree in management in the first-ever QS World University Rankings: Masters in Management Rankings.
New for 2018, this ranking is one of three QS Business Masters Rankings, with rankings also published for finance and business analytics.
One of five French schools in the top 20 for management, HEC Paris ranked ahead of London Business School and ESADE in second and third respectively. All master’s programs were assessed against five metrics and HEC Paris scored full marks for two of these: employability and entrepreneurship & alumni outcomes. 29 different countries are represented in this inaugural ranking, excluding the various global locations of CEMS which is ranked eighth in the world. The United Kingdom is the most-represented country with 24 schools, closely followed by 21 from the United States.

QS World University Rankings: Business Masters Rankings 2018 - Out Now!
Released today, the QS World University Rankings: Business Masters Rankings 2018 compare the top business master’s degrees in management, finance and business analytics. These specialized master’s programs have become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly among entrepreneurial and business-minded students who are looking to develop their skills by gaining a second degree, and these rankings should prove to be a vital tool for anyone choosing between different business schools or study programs.
These rankings have been compiled by measuring university and business school programs against five metrics: employability, entrepreneurship & alumni outcomes, return on investment, thought leadership and diversity. There are slight variations in the weightings between the different rankings. More information about this can be found here.
HEC Paris ranked top for management
Leading the way in the inaugural ranking of management programs is HEC Paris for its Master of Science in Strategic Management. One of 17 French institutions featured in this ranking, HEC Paris scored a perfect 100 in two of the five indicators: employability and entrepreneurship & alumni outcomes.
The rest of the top 10 can be seen below. Other notable aspects are the dominance of European countries (CEMS is the only one not based solely in Europe; it’s spread across 30 cities around the world) and the column outlining which master’s program the school or university has been ranked for.

London Business School are first for finance
Having been pipped to first place by HEC Paris in the management ranking, London Business School has come out on top for finance, with impressive scores of over 93 out of 100 in four of the five indicators.
There’s a greater geographical balance to this top 10, with three American schools featuring alongside seven from Europe. 30 countries are represented in total in this ranking.

MIT lead the way in the world’s first-ever business analytics ranking
Business analytics is a fairly new master’s program compared to management or finance, to the point where this ranking is the first time anyone anywhere in the world has ever compared business analytics programs. The Sloan Graduate School of Management at MIT has the honor of topping this world-first, with three other US institutions close behind.
Given the limited pool of business analytics programs available currently, only 45 have been ranked this year, from 10 different countries.
