5 Amazing Reasons to Study Engineering in the US

Submitted by sponsored.cont… on Wed, 12/07/2016 - 09:34

Sponsored by the University of Arizona

For many engineering students, the US is a natural choice when the time comes to setting their heart on a country of study.

The engineering sector in the US is booming, and according to US News, in fact, as many as 62% of all international graduates enrolled at US universities are enrolled in engineering courses.

Why?

Well, the scope and number of research opportunities and funding within engineering fields and STEM subjects in the US are simply unparalleled. But that’s not all.

Continue reading to  learn about  the most compelling reasons why many engineering students today choose the US over other possible destinations, to start their careers in engineering.

1. Specialize!

Students enrolled on engineering courses in the US are typically asked to specialize very early in their study cycle. Of course, some universities offer more specializations than others. One of the top engineering schools in the US, the University of Arizona offers as many as 14 engineering majors, including environmental, aerospace, biosystems, chemical and the optical sciences… So whatever your aspirations, you’ll be asked to cut to the chase by your third semester to focus on what really interests you.

2. Increase your chances of finding a job after you graduate.

To survive in today’s cut-throat graduate market, you’ll need to be doing everything you can to add value to your CV. But the engineering sector in the US is thriving, and opportunities for specialized graduates to enter the industry aren’t exactly lacking! From American Express to Apple, and even Amazon, many leading multinationals have offices in Arizona and regularly employ engineers.

3.  Use state-of-the-art equipment and get mentored by top researchers.

The US is at the cutting edge of engineering industry and research. Whether you’re all about using the latest high tech tools and technology or would like to be taught by top researchers in your field, studying in the US might be the best option for you.

The University of Arizona, for instance, conducts world-leading research in sustainability and infrastructures, biomedical systems and devices, defense and homeland security, and advanced manufacturing and materials.

With an annual expenditure of US$28 billion, faculty members and students at the university are currently working on over 100 complex projects, with hundreds of engineering undergraduates working in the university’s laboratories.

4. Turbo-charge your earning potential.

This is probably one of the most compelling reasons in this list… Engineers based in the US tend to earn much higher salaries than their counterparts in other countries.

According to PayScale, the average salary for an engineer in the US is US$76,061 – compared to US$64,000 in Germany, US$42,000 in the UK and US$15,000 in China!

Similarlyinterns enrolled on engineering courses at the University of Arizona earn on average US$20.18 an hour – which brings us to our next point…

5. Get a chance to work in the US once you finish your engineering course.

The US government allows companies to employ foreign workers in ‘specialty subjects’ such as engineering, provided they hold an accredited undergraduate qualification from a US institution.

Under a Non-Immigrant H-1B Visa, you would be granted the right to work in the US for a period of six years. You would of course have to find an employer willing to sponsor you, but this method is generally quicker and more popular with engineering students than the procedure of applying for a Green Card.

Think about it.

Submitted by sponsored.cont… on Fri, 12/02/2016 - 11:00

Click here to read the latest version of this article, based on the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2018.

14 Australian universities are featured in the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2017, which celebrates institutions around the world excelling in supporting employability. All universities in the ranking are assessed in five categories, including partnerships with employers, graduate employment rates and alumni outcomes.

Read on to discover 10 (actually 12, as some universities are ranked equally) of the best Australian universities for graduate employability in 2017…

1. University of Sydney

The University of Sydney is the only Australian university to appear in the top 10 of the employability ranking, at an impressive 4th place. It ranks in the top 10 for the ‘graduate employment rate’ category, and the top 50 for all the other performance indicators. Sydney’s alumni community includes six Australian prime ministers (including incumbent Malcolm Turnbull), as well as five Nobel laureates and other notable figures such as writer Germaine Greer, actress Rose Byrne and activist Charles Perkins.

2. University of Melbourne

Ranked joint 11th in the world for graduate employability, the University of Melbourne actually achieves even higher scores than Sydney for employer reputation and partnerships with employers. However, like Sydney, it achieves its highest score for its graduate employment rate. The university is active in supporting budding entrepreneurs, with its flagship Melbourne Accelerator Program (MAP) funding and supporting start-ups. The MAP was voted the 8th best university accelerator program in the world in 2015 and 1st in Australia.

Submitted by sponsored.cont… on Fri, 11/25/2016 - 10:46

QS Graduate Employability Rankings – Methodology

Submitted by staff.writer@qs.com on Mon, 11/21/2016 - 15:30

The QS Graduate Employability Rankings is an annual ranking of universities around the world, celebrating institutions which are committed to and effective in preparing students for the workplace. First published as a pilot edition in 2015, the ranking now features 300 institutions, providing the world’s students with a unique tool by which to compare university performance in this area. Each institution’s total score is compiled based on the following five indicators.

Employer reputation (30%)

Employer reputation is measured using a global survey, in which graduate employers are asked to identify the institutions producing the best graduates in their field. For the 2017 edition of the ranking, the opinions of over 37,000 employers were considered.

Alumni outcomes (20%)

To assess alumni outcomes, QS has sourced the alma maters of those included in 61 lists of highly successful individuals, each measuring desirable outcomes in a particular walk of life. In total, QS analyzed the educational pathways of 21,000 of the world’s most innovative, creative, wealthy, entrepreneurial, and/or philanthropic individuals, to establish which universities are producing world-changing graduates. To acknowledge the fact that many of these lists are produced by research and media outlets based in the US and UK, a weighting formula has been applied that lends extra weight to ‘international’ submissions.

Employer partnerships (25%)

This indicator combines two components to assess institutions’ engagement with industry partners in research and other areas. First, it considers the number of distinct global companies collaborating with each institution in at least three research papers indexed by Scopus. Employment-related partnerships not related to research are also considered. Second, scores are adjusted in proportion to the number of faculty members employed. The 2017 edition of the ranking considers university collaborations with 2,000 top global companies – four times as many as in the pilot edition.

Employer-student connections (15%)

This indicator involves summing the number of employers who are actively present on a university’s campus, providing motivated students with an opportunity to network and acquire information. Employer presence also increases the opportunity of students achieving career-launching internships and research opportunities. This ‘active presence’ may take the form of participating in careers fairs, organizing company presentations, or any other self-promoting activities.

Graduate employment rate (10%)

This indicator is the simplest, but essential for any understanding of how successful universities are at nurturing employability. It involves measuring the proportion of graduates (excluding those opting to pursue further study or unavailable to work) in full- or part-time employment within 12 months of graduation. The scores in this category are calculated by considering the difference between each institution’s employment rate and the national average. This accounts for the fact that a university’s ability to foster employability will be affected by the economic performance of the country in which it is situated.

The results are published in an interactive online table, which can be sorted by each of the five indicators listed above. To access the full functionality of the results table, including the option to view direct comparisons of specific universities, you first need to log in or register as a site member (completely free).
