Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University is one of the oldest classical universities of Ukraine. It was founded on October 4, 1875 by the decree of the emperor of Austro-Hungary Franz Josef comprising the Faculties of Theology, Philosophy and Law. Nowadays 2 institutes, 12 faculties and a college are functioning at the university. The training of approximately 15 000 students is being carried out in 106 majors at 88 departments. Educational and scientific work is provided by 1208 teachers, including 156 Doctors of Sciences, professors, 779 PhDs, associate professors including 4 laureates of State Awards and 1 corresponding member of National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine. The University has Ph.D. and Doctorate schools, 11 specialized academic boards for the thesis defense.

Teaching staff and students of the university participate in joint scientific programs realized according to cooperation agreements with leading educational and scientific institutions of the USA, Canada, Austria, Germany, Poland, Romania, China and other countries. Nowadays, Chernivtsi National University has signed over 180 international cooperation agreements. From 2011 to 2017, Chernivtsi National University implemented 8 joint multinational projects TEMPUS. Within the academic mobility program Erasmus+ KA1: Mobility Project for Higher Education Students and Staff, Chernivtsi National University has signed 30 agreements. In 2018, Chernivtsi National University earned the first place in Ukraine in terms of the number of projects the university won (3 projects) within the Erasmus+ KA2: Cooperation for Innovation and Good Practices. Since October 1999, Chernivtsi University has been accepted to the honorary members of International association of universities “Рhi Beta Delta” (the USA). Since 2008, CHNU has become a member of the University of Warsaw and Ukrainian Universities Consortium. Since 2009, Chernivtsi National University has been one of the Ukrainian higher education institutions that have signed the Magna Charta Universitatum. In 2010, CHNU became one of the founders and a member of the Consortium of Universities of Ukraine – the Republic of Moldova – Romania.
