Ural State Mining University

Full-time education at the university is accomplished at 5 faculties: the faculty of Mining-Mechanics, the faculty of Mining Technology, the faculty of Geology and Geophysics, the faculty of Engineering and Economics, and the faculty of Municipal Economy (the latter providing vocational education).

Training is also carried out at the faculty of Extramural Education, where they employ elements of online technologies. In the educational process 46 university departments are involved, 35 being specialized graduate chairs.

Since 1947, the Ural State Mining university has also been conducting training engineering and scientific staff for foreign partners. It has extensive working experience with foreign teachers and students of all categories: students, trainees, doctoral candidates, students of advanced training courses. The university has trained more than 2,000 specialists for geological and mining industries of China, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, the United States, Guinea and Mongolia. The university cooperates with dozens of foreign universities, including Freiberg Mining Academy, Chinese University of Oil, Heilongjiang University of Science and Technology and others. At present, students from 15 countries study at the Mining university.

Priority areas of university scientific research:

GEO: geology;exploration and prospecting for minerals (assessment of potential hydrocarbon resourcesin the flat Northern territories of Sverdlovsk region; making geological andeconomic solutions for their prospective development).

GEOENGINEERING: design and survey works (geological-engineering and hydrogeological investigationsof mineral deposits; assessment of their baseline ecological state; calculationof water inflow into workings under development).

TECHGEO: technologyand equipment for mineral extracting and dressing (developing optimal methodsof raw minerals complex processing and maintenance comprehensive mineralutilization control as well as research technologies to assess oresdressability).

TECHNOGEN: ecological principles of nature management and land reclamation(ecological and economic assessment of mining technologies; developing measuresto reduce environmental impact of mining production).

GEORISKS: technogenic safety (developing, design and implementation ofsoftware-technical risk reduction tools to prevent accident initiations andprogressing at mining-metallurgical enterprises; design and calculation ofventilation systems at industrial areas).

The results of researches carried out at theuniversity are in demand at mining and metallurgical enterprises of the Uralsand Russia, among them are ALROSA, VSMPOAVISMA, the Uralmash plant, Uralasbest,UMMC and many others.

A real system of training specialists for highlytechnological and science intensive economy areas is established at theuniversity. More than 200 students, teachers and young scientists are involved intoinnovative activity. Annually the university projects are presented for FederalCompetitions and become winners; the amount of employed investment funds isincreased on the average by 25% every year.
