Why Are International Students Avoiding the US and UK?

Submitted by craig@qs.com on Tue, 06/18/2019 - 11:26

Today’s QS World University Rankings 2020 reveal a disturbing trend for both UK and US universities. Despite continuing to be home to the world’s very best unis, both the UK and US see an overall decline in university performance.

Looking closer at the indicators used to compile our ranking, one significant factor in this decline has been the low scores universities in both countries have received for their percentage of international faculty and international students.

Intended as a measure to show the level of diversity at institutions, this poor performance suggests both UK and US universities are becoming less appealing to faculty and students from other countries.

Below is a comparison of how the top universities in the UK scored for international faculty and international students over the last two years.

This trend continues far beyond the very top universities in both countries. So, what’s turning international students away from two of the historically most popular study destinations?

Work restrictions

One of the biggest attractions to studying in a foreign country is the possibility to work in the same country after graduation. This is especially true of the UK and US, two countries where graduates can expect to earn a significant income depending on their degree.

However, it’s become significantly harder for overseas students to stay on after graduation for work in the UK. Outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May took a hardline approach to immigration and restricted international students to just six months of work after finishing their studies.

One of the contenders to replace May as PM, Sajid Javid, has said he wants to make it easier for overseas students to work in the UK, but with Brexit consuming all political debate there’s too much uncertainty about if and when this will happen.

Brexit has also left EU students – previously confident in their ability to remain in the UK for work – uncertain of where they stand. This is unlikely to improve until Brexit is resolved, and long-term guarantees can be offered to EU citizens.

While the visa available to students in the US is more attractive, allowing them to work for a longer period after graduation, the latest data from US Citizenship and Immigration Services shows a steady rise in the number of visa applications being denied.

In October-December last year, a quarter of all H1-B visa applications were denied. By contrast, the rate of denied applications in the final year of Barack Obama’s presidency was just six per cent.

Fees/tuition

As well as uncertainty over their future earnings, international students are also facing more expensive tuition fees than they have previously. In some cases, this is due to decisions taken by individual institutions. For example, the University of Oxford announced earlier this year that international tuition fees will rise by over 10 percent for more than 40 undergraduate courses.

Brexit has also led to a lack of clarity about how tuition fees will change for EU citizens. While students enrolling in 2020/21 are guaranteed to pay the same fees as domestic students, no information has been given for students beyond that.

It’s not just tuition fees that are getting more expensive either. In the US, the Department of Homeland Security has increased the fees it charges international students and exchange visitors for processing their paperwork.

It’s understandable that this, combined with the aggressive posturing of an American president who has labelled African countries “shitholes” and made racist comments about Mexicans and Muslims, is making America feel less welcoming to the brightest minds in other countries.

Political tensions

Donald Trump’s blow-hard invective is having other impacts too, with education becoming a victim to diplomatic spats. For instance, the Chinese government has taken the unusual step of warning its students to not apply for visas to study in the US.

China is the biggest contributor of undergraduate and graduate international students to the US, making up one-third of all foreign students in 2017/18. However, diplomatic tensions between the two countries over trade have led to the Chinese government taking this extraordinary measure and universities are now expecting to receive fewer applications from Chinese students in the years ahead.

Can the situation improve?

Obviously, there’s no need for UK and US universities to completely panic. For now, they remain some of the most reputable institutions in the world and that will always be a significant pull factor.

However, the dangers of losing ground to universities elsewhere cannot be overstated and the drift of Chinese students to other destinations, for instance Australia, is likely to have far-reaching impacts. It will be fascinating to see whether this trend continues next year.

Out Now: QS World University Rankings 2020

Submitted by craig@qs.com on Tue, 06/18/2019 - 11:18

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been named as the best university in the world for a record-breaking eighth successive year, making it the most successful institution in the history of our ranking.

The American university is one of 157 US institutions to be ranked this year. Interestingly, not all of them can match MIT’s consistency, with 117 of them falling in rank this year. A similar story can be seen in the performance of UK universities, with 56 of the 84 institutions based there dropping at least one place.

While the likes of the University of Oxford continue to perform well – the elite university is up one place to fourth this year – other, less renowned UK universities have struggled to keep pace with those around them.

The decline on both sides of the Atlantic is – at least partly – due to UK and US universities seeing a decline in international students. The ratio of international students is one of the indicators used to compile the ranking (as explained in our methodology) and the impact of both Brexit and Donald Trump appear to be pushing international students to consider alternative study destinations.

Australia, in particular, appears to be benefiting with 26 of the 35 universities based there improving their ratio of international students. Nine of the world’s 50 most international universities are now Australian.

Below, you’ll find this year’s top 10. Keep reading for more analysis of how universities performed by each of the six ranking indicators.

Academic reputation

Eight universities have all scored a perfect 100 for academic reputation in this year’s ranking, a measure of how the institution is perceived by other academics. Five of these are listed in the overall top 10 above (MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge) but the other three are worth focusing on briefly.

The University of Tokyo is up one place to joint 22nd this year and continues to be the top university in Japan. Only three other institutions from Asia are ranked above Tokyo this year, cementing its reputation as one of the best places to attend university in the continent.

Our other two faultless universities with academics are not only both based in the US, they’re both based in California. The University of California, Berkeley (UCB) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) have both fallen in overall rank this year but continue to enjoy a healthy academic reputation, having also scored 100 for this indicator last year.

Employer reputation

This indicator functions in much the same way as academic reputation, only it’s based on the opinions of some of the top employers around the world. Looking at this indicator in isolation, we can see which universities you should want to be able to list at the top of your CV.

Only six have managed a perfect score of 100 this year, five of which also scored 100 with academics. The sixth, CentraleSupélec, is ranked 139th in the world and is only the fourth best university in France. This poor overall performance is the result of poor academic reputation, suggesting the newly-founded institution (it was established in 2015) is still yet to earn notice for its research and teaching.

Faculty: student ratio

A whopping 20 universities achieved a perfect score for their ratio of faculty members to students this year, showing more institutions are recognizing the benefits of small class sizes and personal contact with tutors. Only 19 universities managed this feat in last year’s ranking.

A wide range of universities are among the 20 this year, with Japan, Italy, France, Russia and Denmark all represented. While five of the institutions achieved an overall finish in the top 10, others are far more obscure. Wake Forest University in the United States is the lowest-ranked university to score 100 for its faculty to student ratio, having dropped 11 places to joint 398th.

Citations per faculty

A measure of the quantity of research being produced by a university, citations per faculty allows institutions with a strong analytical focus to shine.

Of the five universities to score a perfect 100 this year, only Caltech is a recognizable name from our overall top 10. Princeton University and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) are also based in the US, while the other two universities are from India and South Korea.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has dropped 14 places overall this year to 184th but continues to enjoy a strong research output. It performs best in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for chemical engineering and materials science, suggesting those two areas are likely to be the focus of much of the institute’s leading research.

The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) has also underperformed this year overall, falling seven places to joint 322nd. It also performs well in our subject rankings for materials science, so anyone interested in this subject area has two intriguing, more obscure universities which they may want to consider applying to.

International faculty and international students

These two indicators both measure how international a university is, something which we consider to be an important factor, particularly for anyone looking to study abroad.

Around 50 universities achieved a perfect score for at least one of these indicators, suggesting there are plenty of places where international students will feel more than welcome. There’s a fantastic level of international diversity at universities all over the world, from the United Arab Emirates to Australia, France and even Saudi Arabia.

Interestingly, only 10 universities achieved a perfect score in both of these indicators and none of these are from the US. The UK is represented three times, by Imperial College London, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and SOAS, University of London. Clearly – despite anxieties about Brexit – London remains thoroughly open to international students.

QS World University Rankings 2020 - Notes

Submitted by craig@qs.com on Tue, 06/18/2019 - 09:22

Waseda University

After completion of our analysis and distribution of the fact files to all featured institutions, Waseda University informed QS that the dataset they submitted contained an incorrect figure for their faculty member count. This discrepancy has positively affected their result in the Faculty/Student Ratio indicator, (while it negatively affected the International faculty indicator), and therefore their position in the overall table.

Though the QS Intelligence Unit carefully audit all data submitted by universities, the discrepancy between Waseda University's year-on-year faculty figures was not sufficient so as to reasonably suggest that such an error had been made, and it was therefore not identified as such until Waseda University contacted QS.

Both QS and Waseda University have taken appropriate steps to acknowledge the role that this error has played in the latter's year-on-year rise. This error has now been corrected and future rankings will reflect the accurate figure. Had Waseda University submitted the correct information on time for the analysis of this edition of the rankings, they would have risen six places to 202.

国际学生为什么选择去西班牙留学?

Submitted by stephanie@qs.com on Tue, 06/18/2019 - 09:16

Best Study Spots in Birmingham

Submitted by lilyjones.lj22… on Mon, 06/17/2019 - 12:23

Spending hours on end in the same spot in the library can be more sleep inducing than work producing. A change of scenery is healthy for both the mind and soul, so we’ve put together a list of our favorite places to study in Birmingham.

If you’re enrolled at one of the city’s universities, boost your productivity by swapping the library for one of these top study spots.

Medicine Bakery and Gallery

It’s easy to walk past this hole in the wall bakery, with its chic signage hidden among the chain store giants that otherwise dominate the high street. However, once you’ve discovered Medicine, you’ll never forget it.

A tempting display of hand-shaped, artisanal bread will guide you to a beautifully restored marble staircase. Follow your nose up the stairs to the impressive cake display waiting at the top.

Whether you’re in the mood for a quick snack, filling brunch or simply a caffeine kick, you’ll find it here. Maybe you’ll be tempted by a filled cronut topped with perfect swirls of blackberry mascarpone, or a sourdough toasty bursting with comforting combinations of British cheese. Alternatively, choose a nutritious Buddha bowl from the menu, packed full of brain-fueling nutrients.

Remarkably, the culinary delights aren’t even Medicine’s best feature. Hidden behind the tempting cake counter and the abundance of leafy hanging plants, is the main event – a huge open-plan communal seating area, complete with skylights, free Wi-Fi and an ever-changing reel of thought-provoking art exhibitions.

On top of all this, you can get 15 percent off all baked goods if you have an Independent Birmingham Card!

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Staring at the same shelves full of dusty books can be totally uninspiring when you’re nearing your 12th hour in the university library. So, why not swap that hard chair and dusty view for a plush leather armchair and some grand Edwardian architecture?

Head to the second floor of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and you’ll find a spacious tearoom. You don’t have to be visiting the exhibitions to sit here, so bring your laptop and settle in for the day.

This huge, open-plan room, now known as the Edwardian Tearoom, has plenty of comfy seats and plug sockets that provide all of the library conveniences without the boring backdrop. Plus, if you do find yourself needing some inspiration, you can take a quick wander around some of the inspiring exhibitions.

Make sure to take advantage of the daily offers here. On a Thursday, arrive before 12pm to be treated to a large coffee and slice of cake for less than a fiver, while on Saturday you can start the day right with 10 percent off any brunch dish before midday.

JuJu’s Café

Why is exam season always perfectly timed with some of the hottest days of the year? Staring out of the library window at the lucky people sunning themselves in the park outside can be downright depressing.

Fortunately, there’s a place where you can study as well as get your daily dose of Vitamin D. Take a walk along the canal into Brindley Place and look out for the orange signage of JuJu’s Café, your new favorite summer studying spot.

As well as plenty of comfortable indoor seating, there are spacious tables outside with a beautiful panoramic view over the canal. Here you can grab a large coffee and delicious stack of pancakes for less than a tenner.

Better still, this part of the canal has fewer passers-by, so you should be left to study in peace.

However, the great food and service at JuJu’s has not been unnoticed by the hungry people of Birmingham, so it’s best to visit on a weekday to guarantee a table and a quieter environment.

Damascena

You’ve left a deadline ‘till the last minute and now the library is shutting, your flatmates are throwing an impromptu party and you’ve got nowhere to go.

Luckily, there are a few cafes in Birmingham’s city center that have late opening hours and a great environment to work in.

Damascena is the best option if you fancy working well past dinner time, with opening hours often extending past 9pm. Found just off Colmore Row, it’s a short walk away from the center of town, making it a quick and convenient place to get to.

Offering delicious Middle Eastern dishes for reasonable prices, reliable Wi-Fi and good strong Turkish coffee, Damascena may just be the lifeline you need during exam time.

Best Places to Eat in Manchester

Submitted by Mattyl64@hotmail.com on Mon, 06/17/2019 - 11:13

Long gone are the days where Manchester's culinary claims to fame were the likes of rag pudding, eccles cake and vimto. Today, this modern metropolitan city hosts a wide range of multicultural delicacies and delights. Whether it be fine dining in Deansgate, the worldly food of a bustling Chinatown, or branching out into the alternative bohemia of the Northern Quarter, this city has it all. Manchester competes on every level with the vibrancy and energy of any UK city, complete with its own unique northern charm.

Here are some of our favorite places to grab a bite to eat between lectures when studying in Manchester.

Hawksmoor

Located in the Deansgate area of Manchester inside a beautiful Victorian courthouse building, Hawksmoor Steak and Seafood restaurant is not to be overlooked if steak is your food of choice.

A wide range of steak cuts are on offer here, and you'll want to bring your appetite - steaks don’t generally come any smaller than 500g.

Although Hawksmoor can be a fine dining experience, it doesn’t have to break the bank, and offers a steak lunch special for under £16. Perfect if you're on a student budget!

Teppanyaki Chinatown

Set in the heart of Manchester's Chinatown, Teppanyaki is the place to go for the ultimate food-theatre experience. Authentic Japanese food is cooked right before your eyes, allowing you to learn all about the Teppanyaki cooking culture.

Often restaurants of this style can appear overcrowded and somewhat gimmicky, but not Teppanyaki Chinatown. The restaurant has a calm and cosy feel to it, with all focus on the quality of food.

Luck Lust Liquor and Burn

Situated in Manchester's Northern Quarter, Luck Lust Liquor and Burn focuses on all things Mexican. Combining great Mexican staples such as tacos and burritos, with original fillings and exotic cocktails, this restaurant is a feast for the eyes as well as the pallet.

Its rustic decor, and easy-going vibe make it a popular student destination and a perfect choice for anyone looking to socialise over tantalising cocktails and eat the best burritos outside of Mexico.

Evelyn’s Cafe Bar

If one place personifies the bohemian feel of Manchester's Northern Quarter, Evelyn’s Cafe Bar is it. With extensive breakfast, day, evening and Sunday menus, one visit won't be enough to enjoy all the amazing food available here.

All produce is prepared with fresh ingredients, including a plethora of vegan and and gluten free options. Evelyn’s also sells a sophisticated choice of health 'shots', including turmeric with beetroot, ginger with lemon and blue algae.

On the cusp of all things new and fresh in the world of independent cafe culture, Evelyn’s is reasonably priced and ideal if you're currently on a bit of a health kick.

No1 Canal Street

No1 Canal Street is, as the name suggests, situated on the famous street that bares this restaurant's name. No1 combines the best British-inspired dishes with an extensive wine menu to match.

This restaurant is a perfect combination of great tasting, high-quality traditional dining with affordable prices. Eating here will give you a chance to try traditional northern delicacies such as the black pudding scotch egg, served with a celeriac, apple and truffle remoulade. Or maybe you'd rather have the apple and sage sausage roll, served with a pickled vegetable salad.

Whatever you choose to eat, whether you're a Manchester native or visiting student, you'll have a fantastic meal here.

The Allotment Vegan Eatery

Found in the center of Manchester, The Allotment Vegan Eatery sets a very high standard when it comes to restaurants, vegan or otherwise.

Their ever-changing menu comprises a wide variety of choice, flavors and creativity. Choose from their extensive al a carte, lunchtime and small plate menus, and you're sure to find a dish that’s right for you.

If you wish to try a little of everything, you can also opt for a five- or 10-course taster menu and enlighten yourself to the often unknown delights of vegan cuisine.

Skillfully crafted surprises such as the cauliflower hot wings, the butternut squash bon bon, both served with a puy lentil ragout, are must-eats and will change your perceptions of vegan food.

With a casual setting, an attention to detail, and a abundance of choice, The Allotment Vegan Eatery will have vegans and meat-eaters returning alike.
