What to Expect When Studying in London

Submitted by chelseadavies9… on Thu, 06/13/2019 - 10:48

London has been ranked as the best student city in the world in the QS Best Student Cities 2018, making it a fantastic place to study. 17 universities from London are included in the QS World University Rankings, two of which are in the global top 10. The city’s academic prowess, world-leading resources and incredible job opportunities make it an excellent place to launch your education and career.

If you're planning to study here, among the city's iconic landmarks, world-famous attractions and innovative art and cultural scene, here's what you can expect when living in London.

World-class universities

London is home to some of the most prestigious universities in the world, with Imperial and UCL currently leading the way, ranking eighth and 10th respectively in the QS World University Rankings 2019. Whether you're looking to study medicine, humanities or specialise in the arts, London has an abundance of world-renowned options for you to choose from.

It's worth researching which university performs best within your chosen field, as institutions specialise in different areas. Learning from experts at the forefront of your field will provide invaluable insights and set you apart academically and professionally.

Access to the best resources in the world

As you progress through university, access to resources and research beyond your university library becomes ever more important. When it comes to accessing the best libraries, museums and research collections the world has to offer, London delivers.

Happily, the majority of them are free to use, so it couldn’t be easier to take full advantage of the incredible resources on your doorstep. Excellent places to start are the British Library and Senate House, as both also provide pretty impressive study spaces.

Expensive accommodation

Unfortunately, all the benefits of living in London do come at a price. Real estate is at a premium in the nation’s capital and this is reflected in hefty rent prices which out-do every other UK city. While this is, to some extent, unavoidable, it should by no means deter you from studying in London as there are tips and tricks to ensure you bag yourself a bargain apartment.

London’s rental market is very competitive and moves at lightning speed, so signing up to a rental website and keeping up-to-date with new listings is a must. Thanks to excellent transport links across the city, you don't have to limit your search to the places nearest university. Look south and east to get the most for your money.

With a little organisation, determination and quick thinking, you will find a place in no time.

Amazing professional opportunities

A world-leading center of finance and commerce, London is an excellent place to secure an internship or work experience opportunity that will help to set you apart from your fellow students when it's time to apply for jobs. Internships and part-time roles that are often only available in the capital can lead to further opportunities and offer a launch pad for your career.

There is also an abundance of part-time jobs available in London, which is perfect for students. London wages are typically higher than elsewhere in the UK, which will hopefully give you some extra cash to splurge on the city’s excellent cuisine and nightlife.

London’s sheer size

The third largest city in Europe and home to almost 9 million people, London is definitely a big, bustling place. Despite its size, it is a surprisingly easy city to navigate thanks to the excellent transport network and the help of apps such as Google Maps and Citymapper.

Get yourself an Oyster card - students can save 30 percent on Travelcards and passes - or simply use your contactless card to hop on a tube, train or bus and travel around the city in no time.

There are many distinct areas of London. Hipsters flock to trendy areas in the east, while high-class, posh London can be found to the west. Wherever you travel to, you're likely to find an amazing shop, cafe or restaurant so head out, explore the city and find your favourite spot.

A buzzing social life

Unlike many universities in the UK, several London universities do not provide all their first-year accommodation around a central campus, instead, halls will be spread out across the city.

The good news is that this provides countless opportunities to socialise with other students through societies and events. Definitely make the most of the free events and mixers in your first few weeks.

While you'll hear this advice countless times, it really is beneficial to join a society at a non-campus university, as it will bring you into contact with students you may otherwise never have met. Even outside of university, there are so many clubs and groups in London and unique opportunities to meet like-minded individuals.

Iconic attractions on your doorstep

Studying in London means you'll find yourself surrounded by world-famous sights every day. London is home to historical landmarks, unique architecture and incredible shows that you simply cannot see anywhere else in the world.

Make the most of your time in the capital by heading out on some sight-seeing adventures. The best part is that a stroll around the biggest attractions can be absolutely free.

Cycle around Westminster to see the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben or head to Buckingham Palace and wander around Hyde Park. Wrap up your day by catching a show in the West End or at one of the city's other world-renowned theatres such as Shakespeare’s Globe or The Old Vic.

公共卫生专业人员如何在职业上获得进步

Submitted by stephanie@qs.com on Wed, 06/12/2019 - 16:18

Six Things to Know About Visiting Death Valley

Submitted by megandye@mac.com on Wed, 06/12/2019 - 13:06

Death Valley is probably one of the most diverse and mysterious locations on the planet. With the highest point of the National Park a mere 15 miles from the lowest point in the whole of North America, this diverse landscape has enough twists and turns to have anyone confused. It's also incredibly beautiful. And incredibly hot. While I visited here, the heat actually completely killed my phone. But it was 100% worth it.

Here are five things you should know about visiting Death Valley.

It's the hottest place on Earth

The world's highest recorded air temperature occurred here on July 10, 1913, when thermometers hit 134 degrees Fahrenheit. One hundred years later, it's still a scorcher. The hottest recorded month in Death Valley was in June 2013, when the temperature was consistently at levels that can only be described as bonkers. The hottest day in the month was 129.2 degrees Fahrenheit.

It's so hot, you can't even use air conditioning

If my phone died, what do you think will happen to a car/minibus? Air conditioning is a strict no-no as the hot air causes air conditioning system to break and (in some cases) overheat and set on fire. So, unfortunately, you'll just have to sweat it out. When I went, my top changed color I was sweating so much. Yes, you'll stink. But everyone else is in the same boat as you so try not to worry about it.

It has highs and lows

Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America; 282 feet below sea level. It's a really surreal place, where you feel like you can see for miles along the salt flats. Although it's still really, really hot, in winter you can actually hike across the flats.

However, when I went in summer, we left the bus to take some pictures, but then had to quickly get back on the bus as we were covered in sweat.

From the lows to the highs, just 15 miles away from the lowest point in the whole of North America, is the highest point in the National Park. Telescope Peak stands tall at 11,049 feet.

It’s actually a really diverse landscape

Despite the astonishingly harsh conditions in Death Valley, the landscape continues to thrive. Desert bighorn sheep, lizards and tiny pupfish, which live in pools saltier than sea water, all call the National Park ‘home’ and prove that life can thrive even in the harshest conditions.

In 2005, the desert sprang to life in what was called the "bloom of the century", and in times of rain and floods the National Park is covered with incredible shows of spring wildflowers.

91 percent of the 3.1-million acre park is designated as wilderness, which shows how extensive the vegetation is.

The stargazing opportunities are epic

If you can stay overnight - please do. The sky is a perfect spot for stargazing, as there's virtually no light pollution. In fact, International Dark Sky Association says Death Valley is the largest International Dark Sky Park in the US.

It's quite surreal and supernatural

People often think of Death Valley as otherworldly, due to its harsh landscape and climate. There is also a supernatural phenomena here of sliding boulders. The Racetrack is a dry lake bed, where boulders seemingly slide across the landscape, leaving a trail in the desert dust. Tracks suggest some rocks have moved up to 1,500 feet, but no one has actually seen it happen. Spooky.

24 Hours in Vegas as an Under-21

Submitted by megandye@mac.com on Wed, 06/12/2019 - 11:33

A trip to Las Vegas is definitely something to tick off your bucket list when in the US, but, if you happen to visit while aged under 21, you won't be able to have the traditional 'Sin City' experience.

As you have to be 21 or older to drink or gamble in Las Vegas, the casinos and bars will be out of bounds if you're not old enough. When I visited, I was 20, and six months off the big 21. I'd found myself on a road trip heading to Las Vegas. As the youngest in my tour group, I was stressed. What would happen if all my group (understandably) wanted to hit the town and I was left alone for the night?

However, have no fear - I actually think I had a better time than my friends.

Las Vegas is mad. Sin City is the most extravagant, ridiculous, ostentatious place I have ever seen. It's amazing, and there's nowhere else on Earth quite like it. It's completely over the top, and that's fundamentally what makes it just so fantastic.

Everyone should go for a trip there at least once in their lives - even if you're underage when you do so. Here are four amazing things I did while my friends were losing their money in the casino.

I saw Britney Spears in concert

This is literally in the top ten best nights of my whole life. She was amazing and the whole night was a chance to relive my childhood. I knew every word. I got a photo with her ‘Oops I Did It Again’ red jumpsuit. We didn’t even set off meaning to go see her in concert - but it was fate and I am still so happy we did.

Unfortunately, she has since cancelled her residency, but there are still some awesome shows and residencies to go see, including Lady Gaga. Who needs booze when you can go watch one of your favourite artists perform in Sin City?

If live pop music isn’t your thing - check out a Cirque du Soleil show. These are phenomenal - and have no cruelty to animals (unlike other circus/entertainment shows).

I went to a huge chocolate shop

This also made me happy. Everything in Las Vegas is bigger than life, and their stores are no different. Hershey’s has a huge chocolate store, complete with dispensers, giant chocolate bars, and more. It is a chocolate lovers’ dream.

I went to Venice without going to Europe

I'm from Europe and I have never been to Venice in Italy. I have, however, been to Venice in Vegas. So I guess it kinda counts, right? You can ride gondolas, hear Italian singing, view incredible artwork, and eat Italian food, all in the air conditioned confines of The Venetian.

The other hotels have heaps of activities too

Las Vegas is so much more than gambling. You can have a croissant underneath the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas. Or turn back time and visit Ancient Greece at Caesars Palace. You can watch the iconic water show at The Bellagio. See a geological phenomena and watch a volcano erupt at the Mirage Hotel. Fancy visiting the Big Apple? Go to the New York Hotel. You don’t need to go to Egypt to see a Pyramid - instead, visit the Luxor Hotel. Maybe even be scared to death at the top of the Stratosphere Tower. There are so many things to see and do, you’ll be busy your whole trip.

Las Vegas is renowned for its gambling, its drinking, and its notorious club nights. However, I found that as an under-21, I could still have an amazing time, and you can too!

Can't drink? Can't gamble? Don't worry, there are plenty of other ways to have a great time on your visit to Las Vegas.
