Top chemical engineering schools in the US & Canada 

The US dominates the rankings in many subjects, and chemical engineering is no exception. Some 53 of the world’s 200 top universities for chemical engineering are based in the US. In addition to the four US universities featured in the top 10 (above), a further 13 US universities are in the top 50 of the chemical engineering ranking, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Princeton University, the University of Minnesota and the University of Texas at Austin, all in the top 20.

Meanwhile Canada claims 10 of the world’s best chemical engineering schools, led by the University of Toronto, McGill University and the University of British Colombia, all in the top 50.

Top chemical engineering schools in Europe

Including three entries in the top 10 (above), the UK offers a total of 15 top universities for chemical engineering. Also in the global top 50 are the University of Manchester and UCL (University College London), and five more UK universities feature in the top 100 of the chemical engineering ranking.

There are nine German universities featured in the ranking, five of which are among the world’s top 100. Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen) is the top-performing German university in this subject, in 36th place.

Italy has six schools featured, of which the highest-ranked is Politecnico di Milano (51-100). 

Each claiming three of the world’s best chemical engineering schools are France, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. Of these, the Dutch Delft University of Technology is the only school featured in the top 50 at joint 6th for chemical engineering, while the Eindhoven University of Technology and the Swedish KTH, Royal Institute of Technology both rank 51-100. All of Spain’s entries and all but one of France’s are ranked 101-150.

Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Switzerland all offer two of the world’s best chemical engineering schools. Both Swiss offerings are within the world’s top 50 – ETH Zurich (12th) and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, 44th). Belgium’s KU Leuven makes the top 100, while Portugal’s University of Porto is ranked 101-150. All of Ireland and Greece’s entries are ranked 151-200.

Sweden’s fellow Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland and Norway, each have one representative; the Technical University of Denmark makes the top 50, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology ranks 101-150, and the Finnish Aalto University is placed 151-200.

Top chemical engineering schools in Australia & New Zealand 

Australia lays claim to 10 of the best chemical engineering schools in the world, including Monash University, the University of Queensland (UQ), the University of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales, all within the top 50 for this subject.

New Zealand meanwhile claims two featured institutions – the University of Auckland at 101-150 and the University of Canterbury at 151-200.

Top chemical engineering schools in Asia

China features the most entrants of the Asian countries with 13, including three in the top 50: Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Japan and South Korea are each home to 10 of the world’s best chemical engineering schools. The leader of these is Japan’s Kyoto University (9th), closely followed by the University of Tokyo (11th). The other three Japanese universities in the top 50 are Tokyo Institute of Technology, Osaka University and Tohuku University.

The top quarter of the ranking also features South Korea’s KAIST - Korea Advanced Institute of Science and TechnologySeoul National University (SNU) and Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). 

India features seven of the top universities for chemical engineering, including four in the top 100. Taiwan has six entries, including National Taiwan University (NTU) in the top 50. Malaysia also has six representatives in the chemical engineering ranking, with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in the top 50 and a further three in the top 100.

Hong Kong has four entrants, including Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) within the top 50, followed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong within the top 100.

Not far behind the National University of Singapore (5th), fellow Singaporean institution Nanyang Technological University comes 18th. And finally for the Asianregion, Thailand has one school ranked in the top 100: Chulalongkorn University.

Top chemical engineering schools in Latin America 

Of the seven top universities for chemical engineering in Latin America, Brazil claims three, including Universidade de São Paulo and Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) in the top 100. Mexico takes two places, with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in the top 100.

The other Latin American entrants are Argentina’s Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) and Colombia’s Universidad Nacional de Colombia, both ranked 151-200.

Top chemical engineering schools in the Middle East

Of the four top universities for chemical engineering in the Middle East, three belong to Saudi Arabia, including King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST) and King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, both ranked 101-150.

The only other Middle Eastern country featured is Israel, with the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology ranked at 151-200.

Top universities for politics & international studies in the US & Canada 

A total of 46 US universities are ranked in the top 200 for this subject, of which 24 are in the top 100 and 17 in the top 50.

Outside of the five US entries in the top 10 (listed above), the next four leading US representatives are Georgetown University (11th), Columbia University (12th), the University of Chicago (14th) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 15th).

Meanwhile Canada has nine entrants in the ranking, including three among the world’s top 50: the University of TorontoMcGill University and the University of British Colombia.

Top universities for politics & international studies in Europe

The UK is another hub of top political science schools, with 30 institutions featured in the ranking. Outside of the top 10 (see above), these include King’s College LondonSOAS – School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and the University of Essex, as well as three more UK entries in the top 50.

Across the rest of Europe you’ll find nine top universities for politics and international studies in Germany and a further six in Italy. Of these, Germany’s Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Italy’s European University Institute, are all featured within the top 50. Also with six entries is Belgium, of which two are in the top 100.

The Netherlands and Switzerland each offer five leading political science schools, the highest ranked of which are the Netherlands’ Leiden University and the University of Amsterdam, as well as the Swiss ETH Zurich, all of which are in the top 50. 

Nordic Europe meanwhile lays claim to 13 top political science schools, with four each in Sweden and Denmark, three in Norway and two in Finland. While the University of Copenhagen is the only Nordic school within the top 50 for this subject, it’s joined among the top 100 by fellow Danish institution Aarhus University, Sweden’s Lund University and Uppsala University, Finland’s University of Helsinki and Norway’s University of Oslo.

Also with four offerings is Spain, including the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in the 101-150 range. In France, Sciences Po Paris (4th) is joined by the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in the 51-100 range. Russia has three top universities for politics and international studies, including Lomonosov Moscow State University in the top 100. 

Next up is Ireland with two top political science schools: Trinity College Dublin in the top 50 and University College Dublin in the top 100. Each with one representative in the ranking are Austria, Hungary and Poland. Among these, Hungary’s Central European University is the highest ranked, placed 40th in the world for politics and international studies.

Top universities for politics & international studies in Australia & New Zealand

The ranking features 11 top political science schools in Australia, including seven within the top 100 worldwide. Australian National University, in 8th place, is joined in the top 50 by the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne. Also in the top 100 are Griffith UniversityMonash University, the University of New South Wales and the University of Queensland.

Of the three universities in New Zealand featured in this ranking, the University of Auckland is the highest ranked at 51-100.

Top universities for politics & international studies in Asia 

The leading countries in Asia for politics and international studies are South Korea and Japan, each with six entries in the ranking. Of these, the leaders are Japan’s University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, as well as South Korea’s Seoul National University, all of which are in the top 50. South Korea and Japan each have two more entries in the top 100.

Of the four universities in mainland China featured in this ranking, three are within the top 50: Peking University, Fudan University and Tsinghua University. Of the three universities in Hong Kong featured, the highest ranked is the University of Hong Kong (23rd), with the remaining two both within the top 100.

Singapore and Taiwan each have two top political science schools within the world’s top 100, led by the National University of Singapore (13th).

Lastly, India also has one entry in the ranking, Jawaharlal Nehru University, in the top 100. 

Top universities for politics & international studies in Latin America 

Of the 12 leading political science schools in Latin America, five belong to Brazil. Of these, the Universidade de São Paulo is the highest ranked at 51-100. Colombia has three entries, with Universidad de Los Andes Colombia leading the way, at 101-150. 

Mexico takes two spots in the ranking, with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) at 101-150 and the Tecnológico de Monterrey at 151-200.

Argentina and Chile each have one school featured in the ranking. These are the Argentinian Universidad de Buenos Aires at 51-100 and the Chilean Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile at 101-150.

Top universities for politics & international studies in Africa & the Middle East

Three top universities for politics and international studies are claimed by Turkey, including Bilkent University (101-150). The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is Israel’s only offering, in the 151-200 range.

South Africa is the only African country featured in this ranking, with the University of Cape Town at 51-100 and the University of Witwatersrand at 151-200.

Top civil engineering schools in the US & Canada 

The ranking features a total of 48 universities in the US and Canada, with 11 in Canada and 37 in the US. As well as the three US universities in the top 10 (see above), a further 18 are within the top 100, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (joint 12th), University of Texas at Austin (15th), Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech, 22nd), Purdue University (26th) and the University of Michigan (joint 34th).

In Canada meanwhile, four schools rank within the top 100: of these, the University of British Colombia and the University of Toronto rank within the top 35, and are joined in the top 100 by McGill University and the University of Waterloo.

Top civil engineering schools in Europe

The UK claims the largest share of Europe’s leading civil engineering departments, with 25 entries in the ranking. As well as two in the top 10, also ranked among the world’s top 50 are the University of Oxford, the University of Manchester and the University of Sheffield.

Each with seven representatives in the civil engineering ranking are Germany and Italy. While Italy claims two within the top 50 – the Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino – Germany offers four within the top 100, including KIT, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

There are plenty more leading universities for civil and structural engineering across Europe, including four in Portugal, and three each in Belgium, France, Greece, Spain and Sweden. Of these, Greece’s National Technical University of Athens, Spain’s Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and Sweden’s KTH, Royal Institute of Technology are within the top 50. 

Also among the top 100 are the Belgian KU Leuven, the Portuguese University of Porto, the Greek Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and two more entries from Sweden – Chalmers University of Technology and Lund University.

Each with two entries in the ranking are the Czech Republic, Ireland, and Switzerland. The highest ranked of these are found in Switzerland, with ETH Zurich and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) both ranked within the top 25.

Other European countries featured in the ranking, with one representative each, include Austria, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Norway and Poland. Of these, the highest ranked are Denmark’s Technical University of Denmark (joint 41st) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (51-100).

Top civil engineering schools in Asia

China is home to 13 of the world’s top 200 universities for civil and structural engineering, the most of any country in Asia. Following Tsinghua University (8th), Tongji University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University also rank among the world’s top 50, and are joined by two Chinese entries within the top 100 – Peking University and Zhejiang University.

In Japan, meanwhile, there are nine top civil engineering universities. As well as the University of Tokyo in 10th place, Kyoto University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology are also among the top 50 for civil engineering, while Tohoku University is within the top 100. 

Of India’s seven representatives, four Indian Institutes of Technology are ranked within the world’s top 100: IIT Bombay (IITB), IIT Delhi (IITD), IIT Kharagpur (IITKGP) and IIT Madras (IITM). South Korea also claims seven entries, with all but one ranking within the top 100, and two in the top 50: KAIST - Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Seoul National University (SNU). 

A further five leading schools for civil and structural engineering can be found in Malaysia, including Universiti Malaya at 101-150.

All of Hong Kong’s four entries in the civil engineering ranked appear within the global top 50. Following the University of Hong Kong (9th), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University comes in at joint 12th, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is 23rd, and the City University of Hong Kong is joint 45th.

Taiwan also offers four entrants in the ranking, including National Taiwan University at joint 34th and National Cheng Kung University at 51-100.

Finally, both Singapore and Thailand have two schools in the ranking. While Thailand’s offerings are both ranked 151-200, Singapore’s representatives are both within the top 50 – the National University of Singapore (3rd) and Nanyang Technological University (joint 18th).

Top civil engineering schools in Australia & New Zealand 

Of the 16 leading civil engineering departments in Australia and New Zealand, 14 belong to the Aussies and two to the Kiwis. For Australia, these include the University of New South Wales, the University of SydneyMonash University, the University of Melbourne and the University of Western Australia in the top 50, as well as five more universities ranked within the top 100.

New Zealand’s two offerings in the civil engineering ranking are the University of Auckland and the University of Canterbury, both in the top 50.

Top civil engineering schools in Latin America

There are nine Latin American universities featured in the civil engineering ranking, split between four countries. The highest ranked of these are Chile’s Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Mexico’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and Brazil’s Universidade de São Paulo (USP), which are all ranked in the top 100. Colombia also features, with the Universidad de los Andes appearing in the second half of the table.

Top civil engineering schools in Africa & the Middle East 

Turkey is home to two of the world’s top universities for civil and structural engineering, including Middle East Technical University, which ranks 101-150. Also ranking 101-150 is Israel’s only entry, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, while Saudi Arabia also features in the ranking with King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals at 151-200.

Finally, South Africa’s University of Cape Town is the sole African representative in the ranking, in the 151-200 range.

This fascinating and fast-evolving field of enquiry is a hugely popular field of study and research worldwide. The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016 features a ranking of the world’s 200 top universities for psychology, based on a methodology which draws on employer and academic reputation, and data on research citations.

Top universities for psychology in the US and Canada 

The US claims a mammoth share of the top universities for psychology, including seven in the top 10 alone. Outside of the top 10 there are another 55 US universities featured, including 32 in the world’s top 100. All ranking within the top 20 are New York University, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago.

Meanwhile neighboring Canada has a total of 15 top psychology schools featured, including nine within the world’s top 100. In the world’s top 50 are the University of Toronto, the University of British ColombiaMcGill University and Western University.

Top universities for psychology in Europe

After the US, the UK claims the next highest number of top universities for psychology at 29, and occupies three of the top 10 positions. As well as those listed in the table above, also in the top 50 are King’s College London, the University of Edinburgh, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the University of Manchester and Cardiff University.

Meanwhile Germany is home to 14 of the world’s top psychology schools, with three ranked among the global top 100: Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.

Following on is the Netherlands, with nine schools featured in the psychology ranking, all among the top 100. As well as the University of Amsterdam in the top 10, other Dutch universities in the top 50 include Vrije Universiteit  Amsterdam and Erasmus University Rotterdam

Six more top psychology schools are claimed by Spain and five by Belgium, while Switzerland, Sweden and Italy each have four. Among these countries, universities ranked within the top 100 for psychology include Belgium’s University of Ghent and KU Leuven (both ranked in the top 50), Sweden’s Karolinska Institute and Switzerland’s University of Geneva and University of Zurich.

Beyond Sweden, the other Nordic countries offer an additional five entrants in the ranking, with two each for Denmark and Norway, and one in Finland. The highest ranked university of these is Denmark’s Aarhus University (51-100).

Lastly in Europe, France and Ireland each have one entry in the psychology ranking, with the Irish Trinity College Dublin placing 101-150.

Top universities for psychology in Asia

Asia is home to 13 of the world’s 200 top psychology universities, including six in the top 100. Hong Kong and South Korea each have three representatives in the ranking, including the University of Hong Kong (41st) and Seoul National University (101-150). 

Singapore claims two entries: the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nangyang Technological University (NTU), both ranked among the world’s top 100 for psychology.

Also with two representatives in the ranking are China and Japan, including China’s Peking University and Japan’s University of Tokyo, both within the top 100 worldwide.

Taiwan also features in the psychology ranking, with its sole entry National Taiwan University, ranked 101-150.

Top universities for psychology in Australia and New Zealand 

Australia boasts 17 of the world’s top universities for psychology, while New Zealand has four. Australia has six representatives within the top 50, including the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales and the University of Queensland.

Two of New Zealand’s offerings are also among the world’s top 50 psychology schools: the University of Auckland and the University of Otago.

Top universities for psychology in Latin America

There are four Latin American universities featured in the psychology ranking, with one entrant each for Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. Brazil’s Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Chile’s Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Mexico’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) all rank 101-150, while Argentina’s Universidad de Buenos Aires is ranked 151-200.

Top universities for psychology in the Middle East & Africa

Finally, Israel claims two top psychology schools, including Hebrew University of Jerusalem, while South Africa claims one entry, the University of Cape Town. Both of these schools are ranked 101-150.
