A fairly recent addition to the QS World University Rankings by Subject, QS’s annual ranking of the world’s top universities for dentistry aims to help prospective students identify top dental schools across the globe.

Top dental schools in the US & Canada 

The US boasts 15 entries among the world’s 50 top dental schools, with its two top 10 entries (above) followed closely by Harvard University (11th) and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (14th). Also within the top 30 are the University of Washington (15th), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 19th), the University of Pennsylvania (21st), Boston University (24th) and the University of California, San Francisco (joint 30th).

Two universities in Canada feature among the top 50 dentistry schools; these are the University of British Columbia (22nd) and the University of Toronto (47th).

Top dental schools in Europe

Sweden claims two of the world’s top 10 dentistry schools: the Karolinska Institute (3rd), and the University of Gothenburg (5th). A third Swedish entrant, Malmo University, is ranked joint 30th.

The country with the most ranked schools in Europe, however, is the UK, with six representatives in the ranking. As well as King’s College London (4th) and UCL (University College London, 8th), other top dental schools in the UK include the University of Birmingham (joint 17th) and the University of Manchester (joint 34th). 

Finland and Switzerland each offer three representatives within the dental school ranking, with the highest ranking Finnish entry being the University of Helsinki (joint 34th), while Switzerland boasts two dental schools within the top 25: the University of Bern (23rd) and the University of Zurich (joint 25th).

Denmark offers two of the world’s top dentistry schools, with the University of Copenhagen placing 13th, while Aarhus University ranks joint 17th for dentistry this year.

Other European countries featured in the dentistry ranking, with one entrant each, include Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain. Belgium’s KU Leuven places 7th, followed by Spain’s Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) (33rd) and the Netherlands’ Radboud University Nijmegen (41st).

Top dental schools in Latin America

While Latin America features less prominently in the dental school ranking, Brazil is a notable exception, claiming three entries among the world’s top 25 – the Universidade  de São Paulo in 9th place, followed by Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp, 20th) and Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho” (joint 25th).

Top dental schools in Asia 

Hong Kong leads the dentistry ranking, with the University of Hong Kong in first place. Elsewhere in Asia, China, South Korea and Taiwan all also offer one top dental school. China’s Peking University is in 16th place, followed by South Korea’s Seoul National University (SNU) (28th) and Taiwan’s National Taiwan University (joint 45th).

Meanwhile in Japan, Tokyo Medical and Dental University claims 6th position for dentistry, while Osaka University appears in 28th place.

Top dental schools in Australia & New Zealand

Australia has three universities ranked among the world’s top 50 for dentistry. These are the University of Melbourne (27th), the University of Adelaide (29th) and the University of Sydney (42nd).

 New Zealand meanwhile offers one top dentistry school within its borders, which is the University of Otago, ranked 12th in the world for dentistry.

Published annually, the QS World University Rankings by Subject includes a ranking of the world’s top 100 universities for art and design, based on a methodology that assesses academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact.

Top universities for art and design in the US & Canada 

The US dominates both the top 10 and the full art school ranking, accounting for nearly a third (32) of the schools featured. Outside of the top 10, high-ranking places are claimed by California Institute of the Arts (12th), Carnegie Mellon University (joint 13th) University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, joint 13th) and Art Center College of Design (19th).

Meanwhile Canada claims two top art schools, with the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto both ranked in the 51-100 range for art and design.

Top universities for art and design in Europe

A total of 27 European universities feature among the top 100 in the world for art and design, including 13 in the United Kingdom. Outside of the top 10, other high ranking European universities include: the UK’s Goldsmiths, University of London (11th) and the University of Oxford (15th), Finland’s Aalto University (17th) and the Netherlands’ Design Academy Eindhoven (18th).

Sweden also performs well, with three representatives, including Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design and Umeå University, which share 41st place in the art school ranking. France and Germany each have two universities featured in the 51-100 range for art and design.

Top universities for art and design in Australia & New Zealand 

Australia boasts 12 entries in the art school ranking, with RMIT University, the University of New South Wales (UNSW), University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), Swinburne University of Technology and the University of Melbourne all ranked in the top 40.

Meanwhile New Zealand features with two of the world’s top art schools: Auckland University of Technology and the University of Auckland, both of which are ranked 51-100.

Top universities for art and design in Asia

The art and design ranking features 14 universities spread across six countries in Asia. China has the region’s largest presence, with five entries, all but one of which are in the top 50. The highest ranked Chinese university for art and design is Tsinghua University (23rd).

Hong Kong may only have two entries, but boasts the highest ranking university in Asia for art and design with Hong Kong Polytechnic University (21st).

Elsewhere in Asia, high places are also claimed by Singapore’s National University of Singapore (27th), South Korea’s Seoul National University (40th) and Taiwan’s National Taiwan University (43rd).

Top universities for art and design in Latin America 

Latin America is home to 11 of the world’s top art schools, with Mexico’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) both ranked in the top 50, and joined there by Chile’s Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Argentina’s Universidad de Buenos Aires. Elsewhere in Latin America, Brazil and Colombia feature two entries each, all ranked 51-100.

Top law schools in the US & Canada

The ranking features 33 top law schools in the US and a further 11 in Canada. Of Canada’s 10 leading law schools, three are within the top 50 worldwide: the University of Toronto (19th), McGill University (26th) and the University of British Colombia (31st).

As well as taking six of the top 10 spots, the US has a total of 13 law schools within the world’s top 50. Outside of the top 10, these are the University of Chicago, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Georgetown University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of MichiganCornell University, and Duke University.

Top law schools in Europe

Another region with a strong representation in the law school rankings is Europe, with 30 entrants from the UK alone. This includes 10 UK universities ranked among the world’s top 50 for law, with a further three UK institutions in the top 100. Close behind those featured in the top 10 (see above) are UCL (University College London, 14th), King’s College London (17th), the University of Edinburgh (28th), Queen Mary University of London (QMUL, 35th) and Durham University (joint 41st).

Germany follows the UK in terms of numbers, home to 12 of the world’s top universities for law. Of these, five are within the top 100, led by Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (39th) and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (48th).

Italy has nine representatives in the law school rankings, including Sapienza - Università di Roma and Università di Bologna (UNIBO), both ranked in the top 100 for law. 

Eight leadinglaw schools are claimed by the Netherlands, led by Leiden University (24th). Spain follows with seven entries in the ranking, including the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), along with two more top-100 entries. 

Switzerland and Belgium each have six representatives in the ranking. The University of Zurich is Switzerland’s top offering at 51-100, while Belgium claims three places within the top 100, including KU Leuven in 30th place. 

France is home to four top law schools, headed up by Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (20th). Three more top universities for law are found in Ireland, two of which, including Trinity College Dublin are within the top 100.

Heading north into Scandinavia, Sweden offers three top universities for law, while Denmark and Finland each have two, and Norway one. Of these, Sweden’s Stockholm University, Finland’s University of Helsinki and Norway’s University of Oslo are all ranked within the top 100.

Lastly, Austria has two universities ranked among the world’s best for law, including the University of Vienna in the top 150, while Portugal has one representative.

Top law schools in Asia 

Of the seven universities in China featured in the law ranking, two are within the world’s top 50: Peking University (21st) and Tsinghua University (36th). There are a further six top law schools in South Korea, four of which are ranked within the world’s top 100. Seoul National University is Korea’s top offering, at 37th

Hong Kong and Singapore boast three entries apiece, the highest of which are the National University of Singapore (16th), the University of Hong Kong (18th) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (50th). Japan claims five top law schools, with the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University both ranked within the top 50 worldwide.

Taiwan has one representative, National Taiwan University (joint 45th). Malaysia also has one entrant – Universiti Malaya (151-200).

Top law schools in Latin America

Home to five top law schools, Chile appears to be the top country in Latin America to study law. Its top offering, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, appears in 38th place. Close behind is Mexico’s sole entrant, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) at 40th.

Brazil features twice in the law school rankings, with the Universidade de São Paulo in the top 100. Colombia has three representatives this year (including two new entries) – its highest ranked is the Universidad de Los Andes Colombia, which is in the top 100. Also in the top 100 is Argentina ‘s sole representative, the Universidad de Buenos Aires.

Top law schools in Australia & New Zealand 

Australia features 13 times in the law school rankings, with all but one of these appearances coming within the top 100. The nation’s leader in the field of law is the University of Melbourne in 8th place, and also within the top 50 are the University of Sydney (11th), the University of New South Wales (13th), Australian National University (15th), Monash University (23rd) and the University of Technology, Sydney (joint 41st).

New Zealand is home to a total of five leading law schools, four of which are among the world’s top 100. These include the University of Auckland (32nd) and the University of Canterbury (51-100).

Top business schools in the US & Canada 

The United States is home to an impressive 43 of the 200 entries in the business school ranking, with Harvard University this year overtaking the UK’s London Business School to be ranked as the world’s top business school. Of the US’s entries, 15 are ranked among the top 50 for business, including University of California, Berkeley (11th), Yale University (16th), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA; 17th). New York University and the University of Chicago also feature in the top 20, sharing 19th place.

Canada has nine representatives in the business and management ranking, including three in the top 50. These are the University of Toronto (35th), the University of British Columbia (38th), and McGill University (joint 45th).

Top business schools in Europe

Europe has many prestigious universities included in the business school ranking, with the top 10 (above) featuring business schools in the UK, France and Italy. 

The UK alone has 25 representatives in the ranking, including seven in the top 50. Outside of the top 10, these are:  the University of Warwick (25th), the University of Manchester (joint 28th) and Imperial College London (36th).

Also performing well in the business and management ranking is Germany with eight representatives, the highest ranked of which is Universität Mannheim (in the 51-100 range).

France is another strong country in which to study business, with six entries in the ranking, including INSEAD (3rd), HEC Paris (14th) and ESSEC Business School, Paris (top 100). 

Five top business schools are claimed by the Netherlands, with Erasmus University Rotterdam the country’s highest ranked (21st). Spain also has five representatives, including ESADE Business School in the top 100. Switzerland claims four of the top business schools in the world, with the University of St Gallen its strongest performer (37th).

Over in Scandinavia, Denmark and Sweden offer three top business schools each, with Denmark’s Copenhagen Business School taking 13th place. Finland and Norway may only offer one ranked business school each, but they’re both in the top 100 – Aalto University and BI Norwegian Business School.

Ireland and Belgium each feature in the ranking with two entries, including Belgium’s Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven, joint 82nd) in the top 100. Greece, Russia and Austria also have one representative apiece in the business school ranking, with Austria’s WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) placing joint 45th.

Top business schools in Asia 

South Korea claims eight of the top business schools in the world, the highest ranking of which is Seoul National University (33rd). China has seven entries in the business school ranking, including three in the top 50. Its highest ranked business school is Peking University (34th). 

Hong Kong’s five representatives in the ranking are all within the top 50, led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST, 18th). Singapore also performs well, with three entries, led by the National University of Singapore (12th).

India and Taiwan each claim five top business schools in the ranking, while Malaysia and Japan have four each and Thailand two.

Top business schools in Australia & New Zealand

Australia has 17 universities featured among the top business schools in the world, of which five are within the top 50. The leader of these is the University of Melbourne (15th), followed by the University of New South Wales (24th) and the University of Sydney (30th). 

New Zealand claims a total of six leading business schools, of which the highest ranked is the University of Auckland (50th).

Top business schools in Latin America  

Of Latin America’s 10 entries in the business school ranking, three are in Chile, including Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile within the top 100.

Brazil and Columbia each claim two representatives, while Mexico has three entries this year, with Tecnológico de Monterrey its highest ranked, featuring in the top 100.

New Ranking of the World’s Top Performing Arts Schools

As part of the continued expansion of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, this year sees the addition of a new ranking dedicated to the world’s top 100 performing arts schools. The ranking features a mixture of dedicated performing arts institutions and comprehensive universities with a strong offering in this field.

The ranking is topped by the US’s Juilliard School, followed by Austria’s University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and the UK’s Royal College of Music. Also featured in the top 10 is Finland’s Sibelius Academy (7th).

Half of the ranked institutions are based in either the US or UK, which claim 26 and 24 representatives respectively. There are also five representatives apiece from Australia, Brazil and Germany, and four each from Canada and France. A total of 27 countries have at least one leading performing arts school in the list.

Narrowly missing out on a spot in the top 10 are the Swedish Royal College of Music in Stockholm (11th), and the French Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris (12th). Germany’s Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin place 16th and 20th respectively, while Switzerland’s Conservatoire de musique de Genève is 19th.

Russia makes an appearance in 27th place with Moscow P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory, while Hungary’s Liszt Academy of Music is in 30th position, and Belgium’s Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles is 41st. Other European countries with at least one representative in the ranking include the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Ukraine, Poland, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Though there are no Asian representatives at the very top of the ranking, the region does have five representatives in the list. Three of these are in Indonesia, with one entry each for South Korea and Hong Kong. The leading Asian performing arts schools are the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Surakarta (joint 43rd) and Korea National University of Arts (46th).

New Ranking of the World’s Top Archaeology Schools

This year’s extended edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject features a brand new ranking of the world’s top archaeology schools. The archaeology ranking is one of six tables published for the first time this year, with a total of 42 subjects now covered by the rankings.

The top of the archaeology ranking is dominated by UK institutions; the University of Cambridge takes the top spot, followed by the University of Oxford and UCL (University College London). The top five is completed by the US’s Harvard University and another UK entry, Durham University.

While the top 10 features institutions in the UK, US, Australia and the Netherlands, the top 20 also includes archaeology schools in Germany, France, Italy and New Zealand. A total of 25 countries claim at least one representative in the top 100.

Top archaeology schools in the US & Canada

The US is the best-represented country in the archaeology ranking, with 21 entries. Outside of the top 10 (above), strong US performances come from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in joint 13th position, Yale University (joint 17th), and the University of Chicago (19th), with eight more US entries in the top 50. Fellow North American nation Canada has five representatives in the ranking, led by the University of Toronto (joint 21st), the University of British Columbia (28th) and the University of Alberta (42nd).

Top archaeology schools in Europe

European countries collectively account for 60 of the top-100 positions. This includes 18 universities in the UK, 10 in Germany, six in France, four each in the Netherlands and Spain, and three in Sweden. European entries just outside the top 10 (see above) include Germany’s Freie Universität Berlin (11th), France’s Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (12th), the UK’s University of Sheffield (joint 13th) and Italy’s Sapienza - Università di Roma (15th). Other European nations home to at least one of the world’s top archaeology departments include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Norway, Russia and Switzerland.

Top archaeology schools in Australia & New Zealand

Australia claims six representatives in the ranking, with the strongest positions taken by Australian National University (8th), the University of Sydney (25th) and the University of Melbourne (41st). The remaining three Australian entries are La Trobe University, the University of Queensland and the University of Western Australia, all within the top 100. Neighbouring New Zealand makes two appearances, with a particular strong showing from University of Auckland (20th), while the University of Otago also makes the top 100.

Top archaeology schools elsewhere in the world

While the regions listed above account for the majority of the spots in this inaugural edition of the ranking, there are several stand-out performances from leading archaeology departments elsewhere in the world. South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand appears in 26th place; Japan’s University of Tokyo is joint 29th; China’s Peking University comes 32nd; and Mexico’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) is joint 50th. Israel’s Tel Aviv University and South Africa’s University of Cape Town are also featured in the top 100.

New Ranking of the World’s Top Nursing Schools

This year sees the QS World University Rankings by Subject extended to feature a brand new ranking of the world’s top nursing schools. Published annually, the rankings now cover a total of 42 subjects. Also new for 2016 are rankings of the world’s top universities for anthropology, archaeology, mining engineering, performing arts and social policy.

The new nursing school ranking features 100 top nursing schools based in 19 different countries. As is the case across the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the US is especially well represented, claiming almost a third (32) of the 100 top nursing schools. Australia follows with 16 entries, while the UK makes 12 appearances, Canada 10 and Sweden six.

The rankings aim to help prospective students identify the leading institutions in their subject, with a particular focus on those planning to study outside of their own country. Institutions are assessed on indicators reflecting academic reputation, employer reputation, and research impact in the field.

Outside of the top 10, Australia’s top place is claimed by the University of Sydney (13th), closely followed by Monash University (16th) and the University of Melbourne (19th). Nearby New Zealand first appears in 32nd place with the University of Auckland, and Massey University is also featured.

Asia’s leading representatives are the National University of Singapore (18th) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (joint 22nd). Taiwan, China, South Korea and Japan also claim at least one entry, contributing to a total of 11 Asian universities in the table.

Collectively, European countries account for 28 of the top 100 nursing departments. Aside from Sweden and UK, particularly strong performances are also claimed by Finnish and Irish institutions, with the University of Turku in joint 24th place, while Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork are ranked 31st and 34th respectively.

The only Latin American country to feature in this first edition of the nursing ranking is Brazil, with three entries: Universidade de São Paulo, Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), all in the second half of the table.

Prospective students consulting the nursing ranking may also be interested in the rankings for other life sciences subjects, including medicine, pharmacydentistry and biological sciences.

New Ranking of the World’s Top Mining Engineering Schools

Among six new tables added to the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2016 is a new ranking of the world’s top universities for mineral and mining engineering. This new ranking of top mining engineering schools is led by three US-based institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject assesses the world’s leading institutions in a broad spectrum of academic areas, drawing on major global surveys of academics and employers, alongside research citations data.

This first edition of the mineral and mining engineering ranking highlights the world’s top 100 mining engineering schools, spread across 26 different countries. US institutions account for almost a quarter (24) of these top 100 mining engineering departments, while the UK and Australia each have nine representatives, closely followed by Canada with eight entries.

Just outside of the top 10, Canada’s top mining engineering schools are claimed by McGill University (13th) and the University of British Columbia (14th). The top 20 also features China’s Peking University (17th), and Chile’s Universidad de Chile (18th).

Other countries with at least one representative in the top 50 include France, Singapore, Germany, Russia, the Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan – a truly global spread of leading mining schools.

Published annually, the QS World University Rankings by Subject aims to help prospective students identify high-performing and highly reputed institutions in their chosen field. In response to growing demand for these subject-level comparisons, QS is working to add more subjects to the list each year. Within the engineering and technology sector, the new mining ranking joins existing tables dedicated to chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.
