This year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject includes an extended edition of the computer science ranking, which now features a total of 500 leading universities in this field.

Top computer science schools in the US & Canada  

The US dominates the computer science ranking with an impressive 90 entries out of the 500 featured, including six in the top 10. Other leading computer science faculties in the US include the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 16th), Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech, 25th), Cornell University (joint 26th). Also in the top 30 are the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the University of Washington, which share 28th place. A further 16 US universities are ranked among the world’s top 100 computer science schools.

Canada meanwhile boasts 18 entries in the computer science list, the highest ranked of which are the University of Toronto (11th), the University of British Colombia (24th) and the University of Waterloo (joint 26th).

Top computer science schools in Europe

The UK has 45 representatives in the computer science ranking. Outside of the top 10 (see above), its leading universities for computer science are Imperial College London (12th), the University of Edinburgh (20th) and UCL (University College London, 33rd). A further five UK universities feature in the top 100 for this subject.

Germany is next up with 35 entries, of which Technische Universität München (TU Munich) is the highest ranked, in joint 36th place. France also performs well, with 21 entries. Of these, ENS Paris and Ecole Polytechnique (ParisTech) rank best, in the 51-100 range for computer science.

Italy claims 15 top computer science schools, with the Politecnico di Milano performing best at 43rd place. The Netherlands has 10 representatives in the ranking, with Delft University of Technology and the University of Amsterdam both within the top 100. 

Eight of the world’s top universities for computer science can be found in Spain, including Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in the top 100. Also with eight entries is Ireland, including Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in the top 150. 

Switzerland has seven entries, with ETH Zurich in the top 10 and  in 18th place. Russia also claims seven entries, including Lomonosov Moscow State University in the top 100.

Austria, Belgium, Greece and Sweden boast six representatives each in the computer science ranking. Of these, Belgium’s KU Leuven, Sweden’s KTH, Royal Institute of Technology and Austria’s Technische Universität Wien (Vienna University of Technology) are all ranked in the top 100.

Elsewhere in Europe, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Poland each have five entries ranked among the world’s top universities for computer science. Of these, Denmark’s entries perform best, with Aarhus University and the University of Copenhagen both ranked in the top 150.

Finland has four entries, while Norway, Portugal and Romania each have three universities featured. Finally, Hungary has two schools featured among the top universities for computer science, while Estonia, Luxembourg, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia are all new to the ranking this year, with one entry each.

Top computer science schools in Asia 

Asian universities have a strong presence in the computer science ranking, with 30 entries claimed by China alone. Three of these are ranked in the top 50: Tsinghua University (17th), Peking University (23rd) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (joint 44th).

Taiwan has 16 representatives in the list, led by National Taiwan University (46th). South Korea has 15 entries, including KAIST - Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Seoul National University (SNU) in the top 50.

India claims 13 of the world’s top universities for computer science, many of which are Indian Institutes of Technology. Two of these are in the top 100: the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

Meanwhile Japan has 11 representatives, including the University of Tokyo in 21st place, while Kyoto University and Tokyo Institute of Technology are both ranked in the top 100.

Malaysia has nine entrants, including Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in the top 100.

Hong Kong is home to some of the highest-performing computer science schools in Asia; all but one of its six entries are in the top 50 of the ranking. These include The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST, joint 14th) and the University of Hong Kong (19th).

Of Singapore’s three representatives, two boast positions within the top 50, with NUS in the top 10 and the Nanyang University of Technology (NTU) ranked joint 14th.

Elsewhere in Asia, Thailand has six entries in the ranking, Pakistan four and Indonesia two.

Top computer science schools in Latin America 

Brazil is the leading Latin American country in the computer science ranking, with 13 entrants. Of these, the highest ranked are the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), which are both in the top 100. 

Another four of the world’s top universities for computer science can be found in Mexico, including the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), both ranked in the top 150.

Chile also performs well with three representatives, including two in the top 150: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the Universidad de Chile. Finally, Columbia and Argentina each have one entry.

Top computer science schools in Australia & New Zealand

Australia features a total of 22 of the world’s top universities for computer science, including four in the top 50. These are the University of Melbourne (13th ), Australian National University (joint 31st), the University of New South Wales (35th) and the University of Sydney (joint 40th).

Over in New Zealand, there are seven top computer science schools featured, the highest ranked of which is the University of Auckland at 51-100.

Top computer science schools in Africa & the Middle East 

Israel claims six of the world’ top computer science schools, including Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in the top 100. Saudi Arabia and Turkey also feature with four entrants each, the highest ranked of which is the Saudi King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) at 151-200. Fellow Middle Eastern country Lebanon is new to the computer science ranking this year, with one entry among the top 500.

South Africa has two representatives in the ranking, including the University of Cape Town in the 301-350 range, while Egypt’s sole entry, Cairo University, is ranked 351-400 for computer science.

Top mechanical engineering schools in the US & Canada 

The US claims 61 of the world’s 300 top mechanical engineering departments, 28 of which are ranked within the world’s top 100. Aside from the six in the top 10, also within the world’s top 50 are California Institute of Technology (Caltech, 11th), Purdue University (17th), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 19th), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (23rd),  Northwestern University (26th), Cornell University (33rd), Princeton University (35th), University of Texas at Austin (43rd), Texas A&M University (45th) and Pennsylvania State University (joint 46th).

Meanwhile Canada is home to 13 of the planet’s 300 top universities for mechanical engineering, with three entries in the top 100. In order, these are the University of Toronto (joint 37th), McGill University (joint 46th) and the University of British Colombia (in the 51-100 range).

Top mechanical engineering schools in Europe

The UK is home to 29 of the world’s 300 top mechanical engineering universities, second only to the US. As well as three within the top 10 (see above), Cranfield University and the University of Manchester are both in the world’s top 50 for this subject. Also in the top 100 are Loughborough University, the University of Sheffield, the University of Bristol and the University of Southampton.

Of the 13 German universities featured in the mechanical engineering ranking, three are among the world’s top 50. These are Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen), Technische Universität München (TU Munich) and Universität Stuttgart. Three more German universities are within the top 100: KIT, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) and Technische Universität Darmstadt

Italy has 10 leading mechanical engineering faculties, including one within the global top 20 – Politecnico di Milano (18th) – and another in the top 100 – Politecnico di Torino.

France claims eight of the 300 top mechanical engineering universities, led by Ecole Polytechnique ParisTech at 51-100. 

There are a further five top universities for mechanical engineering in Belgium, including KU Leuven within the top 100. Spain offers four, including Politécnica de Madrid in the 151-200 range. Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Russia and Sweden are each home to three top mechanical engineering schools. These include the Dutch Delft University of Technology and the Swedish KTH, Royal Institute of Technology – both within the world’s top 25 for mechanical engineering. Sweden’s Lund University also features in the top 100.

Russia’s highest ranked representative is Lomonosov Moscow State University, which is within the top 100. Ireland’s Trinity College Dublin and Greece’s National Technical University of Athens both rank in the 151-200 range.

Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Switzerland each have two entries in the ranking. Switzerland’s two representatives are both ranked in the top 25 – ETH Zurich (14th ) and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (24th). Denmark’s top offering, the Technical University of Denmark makes the top 100, and Austria’s Technische Universität Wien  ranks 101-150. The Czech Republic’s Czech Technical University in Prague is in the 151-200 group.

All home to one leading school in this field are Finland, Hungary, Norway, Poland, and Portugal. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology is the highest ranked among these, at 101-150. The Polish Warsaw University of Technology and the Portuguese University of Porto both rank 151-200, while Finland’s Aalto University and Hungary’s Budapest University of Technology and Economics are in the 201-300 range.

Top mechanical engineering schools in Asia 

After the US and the UK, China claims the strongest representation in the mechanical engineering ranking, home to 21 of the world’s 300 top mechanical engineering schools. These include Tsinghua UniversityPeking University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University – all within the world’s top 50 for mechanical engineering.

South Korea also boasts a strong representation in the ranking, with 17 appearances, including several new entries this year and two schools within the top 50 – KAIST - Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Seoul National University.

Japan is next up, with 14 top mechanical engineering universities, including the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, the Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tohoku University within the top 50.

With a total of nine schools ranked in India, the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology perform particularly well, with four – IIT BombayIIT DelhiIIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras – ranked among the world’s top 100 for mechanical engineering.

Taiwan claims nine leading mechanical engineering universities, with National Taiwan University the highest ranked at 48th. There are two other Taiwanese schools within the top 100: National Cheng Kung University and National Tsing Hua University. Malaysia has eight entries in the ranking, with two among the top 100: Universiti Malaya and Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Hong Kong has five representatives, two of which are in the top 50 – Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of Hong Kong – while its other three representatives are all ranked within the top 100.

Singapore likewise has a strong offering, with NUS in joint 8th place alongside the UK’s University of Oxford, and Nanyang Technological University at 13th. Lastly, both Indonesia and Thailand each have one school featured. These are the Thai Chulalongkorn University and the Indonesian Bandung Institute of Technology.

Top mechanical engineering schools in Latin America 

Nine of the 15 top mechanical engineering universities in Latin America are claimed by Brazil. Of these, one is among the world’s top 100: Universidade de São Paulo.

Mexico boasts three top mechanical engineering universities, including the Instituto Politécnico Nacional at 101-150. Lastly, Argentina, Chile and Colombia each have one entrant, with both Argentina and Colombia new to the mechanical engineering ranking this year.

Top mechanical engineering schools in Australia & New Zealand

Australia appears a total of 17 times in the mechanical engineering ranking, with the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney and Monash University all ranked among the world’s top 50. Also in the top 100 are Australian National University and RMIT University.

Neighboring New Zealand, meanwhile, offers a pair of leading mechanical engineering universities – the University of Auckland at 51-100 and the University of Canterbury at 201-300.

Top mechanical engineering schools in Africa and the Middle East 

Saudi Arabia and Turkey each have four top universities for mechanical engineering, including the Saudi King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals at 101-150. Meanwhile Turkey’s Middle East Technical University ranks at 101-150, followed by Istanbul Technical University at 151-200.

Israel and Egypt each have one representative in the ranking: Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Cairo University. South Africa is the only other African nation featured, with the University of Cape Town ranking within the top 300 for mechanical engineering.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016 provides a ranking of the world’s 300 top universities for economics and econometrics – expanded from the 200 institutions featured last year. The ranking is based on a methodology which assesses academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact.

Top universities for economics in the US & Canada 

Including the seven US institutions featured in the top 10 (above), the US claims 69 of the world’s best universities for economics in this year’s ranking. Also in the top 25 are Columbia University (11th), the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, joint 12th), the University of Pennsylvania (joint 12th), New York University (14th), Northwestern University (15th), the University of Michigan (19th), Duke University (joint 21st), University of California, San Diego (joint 21st), and Cornell University (24th).

Canada boasts 14 top economics schools, including the University of Toronto and the University of British Colombia at 23rd and 28th respectively, while McGill University is also ranked within the top 100.

Top universities for economics in Europe

The UK is home to 34 of the world’s top 300 universities for economics, including nine entries within the top 100. In addition to the three UK entries in the top 10, the top 50 also features UCL (University College London, 16th) the University of Warwick (26th) and London Business School (27th).

After the UK, Italy is the European country with the next largest number of representatives in the ranking, making 16 appearances. Its leading economics school is claimed by the specialized institution Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi (17th).  

Germany offers 15 top economics schools, led by Universität Mannheim (joint 50th). A further nine of the world’s best economics schools are located in the Netherlands, including Erasmus University Rotterdam, the University of Amsterdam and Tilburg University, all within the world’s top 50. 

Also with nine entrants is Spain, including two within the top 50: Universitat Pompeu Fabra (20th) and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (joint 50th). Meanwhile France has eight representatives, including Ecole Polytechnique ParisTech in the 51-100 range. 

Sweden and Switzerland each have six representatives. The Stockholm School of Economics (34th) is Sweden’s leader in the field, while Switzerland’s ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich are both also in the top 50.

Meanwhile Belgium makes five appearances in the economics ranking, including Katholieke Universiteit Leuven at 51-100. Denmark claims four entries, including Aarhus University and the University of Copenhagen in the top 100.

Austria, Russia and Finland each lay claim to three of the world’s best economics schools, with Austria’s University of Vienna and Russia’s Lomonosov Moscow State University both ranking at 101-150, while Finland’s highest-ranked economics school is Aalto University at 151-200.

The Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland and Norway all feature twice in the economics ranking, with the Irish Trinity College Dublin and the Norwegian University of Oslo both ranking 101-150. Hungary’s Central European University is ranked 151-200 while the Czech Republic’s Charles University is in the 201-300 range.

Finally, Greece and Portugal each have one entrant, with the Greek Athens University of Economics and Business ranking 151-200.

Top universities for economics in Australia & New Zealand 

Australia is home to 17 of the world’s best universities for economics, including seven in the world’s top 100. In the top 50 are Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales and Monash University.

Six of the world’s best economics schools can also be found in New Zealand. Of these, the University of Auckland is the highest ranked at 51-100, while the University of Canterbury, the University of Otago and the University of Waikato all rank 151-200.

Top universities for economics in Asia

Asia claims 47 of the world’s best universities for economics, led by China with 11 entrants, including Peking University and Tsinghua University at 33rd and 44th respectively. Japan is close behind with 10 entrants, including the University of Tokyo (31st), while also in the top 100 are Hitotsubashi University and Kyoto University.

Meanwhile Hong Kong has six representatives in the economics ranking, of which three are among the world’s top 50: Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST, 25th), the University of Hong Kong (37th) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (46th).  

Of South Korea’s five entries, three are within the top 100, and Seoul National University comes within the top 50. Singapore’s three offerings are all within the top 100, led by the National University of Singapore (18th).

Other Asian countries featured include Taiwain (with five entries), Malaysia (four), and Thailand (one).

Top universities for economics in Africa & the Middle East

New to the economics ranking this year, South Africa’s University of Cape Town places 201-300. Heading into the Middle East, Israel offers two of the world’s best economics schools, with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University both ranking 101-150.

Top universities for economics in Latin America 

Five countries in Latin America appear in the economics ranking, with four ranked schools in Brazil, three each in Mexico and Argentina, two in Colombia and one in Chile. 

Of these, the highest ranked are Chile’s Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Brazil’s Universidade de São Paulo (USP), both at 51-100. The next two highest ranked economics schools are Brazil’s Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) and Colombia’s Universidad de Los Andes Colombia, both at 101-150.

Also ranked among the top 200 best universities for economics are two Mexican entrants: Instituto Tecnológico Autonomo de México (ITAM) and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Meanwhile, Argentina’s three entries are all ranked 201-300.
